V-Host Site Pal gets a thumbs down from me. Too expensive. The characters can be thoroughly accesorized, but individual characters aren't very versatile. Too cartoony. Much better things (and much less formulaic) can be done with flash. Here's an example: http://botopia.blogspot.com/

Hmmm, I think I agree with you there on the price, to be honest I didn't take a long look as it was something I found while I was looking for something else. I did see an odd face that looked more realistic, but they looked a bit weird as the mouth seems to remain in the same position even when the head turns.
