Cool movies
« on: July 09, 2011, 09:57:57 pm »
This week, while away for some relaxation, I happened across the near ending of Star Trek 'The Motion Picture'
where V__Ger was wreaking havoc on the ship and crew. They were led to V__Ger by the nice looking bald headed
gal whereupon Kirk concluded that V__Ger was really Voyager from earth many, many years prior.

It was concluded that Voyager gathered practically the sum of knowledge in the known universe and had become
a living machine. This is sort of akin to our discussions here in past days regarding self-awareness and machine
intelligence, etc. Yeah...old flick but still a good one IMHO.

Next:Dec 2, 1960 -
Old issue of Twilight Zone with the then beautiful Inger Stevens a daughter of an older couple. Her father was
quite the scientist / inventor and had crafted several household assistants in human likeness and form. Some were
maids, handyman, butler, attendant, etc.
The daughter eventually became rather distraught at these machines (robots) doing all their work all the time and
insisted that her father turn them off. He soon did so and his daughter started ranting about wanting to get out of
the house and go on her own, meet a nice man and have children. It was at this point that both parents got a
concerned look in their eyes. Very soon after a heated discussion the girl managed to come to the realization that
SHE was also a robot...a mechanical daughter for the couple who were unable to have any children of their own.

Her memory implants even indicated that she had a childhood, etc., but the intelligence within left her with the most
puzzled look you ever saw.

That Rod Serling was so gifted for his time.... O0

I caught the original Star Trek film a month or two back as well and I thought it was still really good as well. I think it's a bit of an underrated classic outside of the Treckie fan base.

That Twilight Zone story reminds me of another story like that, forget who, might have been Azimov - or maybe I am thinking of Blade Runner...  I do remember the Twilight Zone from when I was a kid though, I used to really enjoy it.
