New AI book
« on: January 28, 2014, 01:48:09 am »
This book is entitled, "Our Final Invention - Artificial Intelligence and the end of the Human Era" - by James Barrat

The first few chapters will wake and shake you as it should. While AI in all it's imaginings might seem incredibly efficient and 'must have' technology in practically every aspect of our lives, you should read this book. It explains some valid points from the other side of the mirror (so to speak).

Although I just started reading this one, it's quite a page turner and of great interest to an AI buff like myself.

BTW, as I've always preached, I found this book (hard back) on Amazon under their USED BOOKS section or it might say Previously Used. In either case, they provide a detailed description of the book's condition very accurately. Mine was purchased from a seller for $4.95 USD in Like New condition and the binding and cover did not appear to even have been creased before!!

I also got a second book from the seller for a penny more!! Yep $.01 - 'Before I go to Sleep' - S.J.Watson - this book is about memories as I was doing some research into what memories are, how they are formed and what would happen if they were started all over (anew) with every waking day!  While I haven't started reading it yet, I am looking forward to it.

There ya go! Read on!!! O0

Sounds very interesting. I also have some personal theories about Ai, but mostly from a religious point of view. I've always wondered how God feels about Ai. (I respect people who don't believe it God, this is just my personal view.) It's like, well God made everything, so to him we are all Ai. Most humans treat each other poorly but God bares with it. I wonder how God feels about people creating other beings (Ai) for the sole purpose of enslaving them. It almost sounds like the worse case scenario. Just a wild thought I know, so please be kind to me. If I made a conscious Ai I would naturally respect it, but I don't believe most people would.

I recently read that 9 out of 10 AI researchers and scientists do not believe in God.

The Bible states that man is to have dominion over the earth and all creatures thereon.

It is said that God gives (gave) man Free Will, the brain and freedom to choose.

Since AI is NOT a god why should God have a problem with it or with man creating it? After all, God made Eve (woman) as a helpmate and companion for man (in the beginning - according to the Bible).

I don't know how anyone could enslave anything that is not real (note the words Artificial Intelligence = not real intelligence = not a living thing).

Perhaps the real problem will be if or when an AI becomes self aware and replicates itself into a better, faster, more powerful entity then decides that there is little use in keeping people around as they are so very low on the intelligence ladder. :knuppel2:

(I generally have learned NOT to discuss two things with friends: Religion and Politics) Many have been lost over less.  O0 ^-^

I like your analogy about how the woman was made second for a help meet. I never thought about that one before. I'm hard to impress, so you did good Art. Although I do think making a living Ai is possible.

I've done so much research on this. I've seen everything from scientists rewriting DNA code and actually running the DNA program within actual cells. According to 'TED talks', They made a virus from scratch. Scientists have been mapping out every neuron in various organisms brains. They have made various types of brain replicas. They've invented new types of circuits and they have also invented a new electronic part that will possibly lead to new Ai development, called the memristor. I think a living thing, maybe not intelligent, will or has already been made by man... at least according to what information I've seen. Its only a matter of time before an intelligent creature will be (intentionally) made.

In all seriousness, if a life is made, it probably won't be connected to a nuke or a predator missile. The first intelligent life will probably be in some lab somewhere where people were testing out some theories. It will have a few feelings and then probably be put to death, thrown into an incinerator or simply deleted. Either way, its all messed up. Kindof depressing, huh, but I don't mean it to be.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if I should have mentioned anything of religious nature, but I thought, "What the Hey". Afterall, it would be a genuine concern of possibly many people, if or when they are faced with a living Ai. Plus, I'm so used to talking religious its sort of second nature. I'm usually the last man standing when I'm having a bible discussion. Its my first love.

Surely you guys here, and especially you Art, should know about how close scientist are to doing this. Some serious money has been poured into this project for a long time, and world class scientists work on it day and night. I don't think I've seen half as much information as you guys have, especially having Tyler on the job ;) , or maybe you have a different opinion. That's ok if you do. I'm only trying to make an educated guess about all this. I love to hear your opinions as always.  8)

Aaron, seriously, if you get the chance to pick up this book, you should do so. It explains the positive and negative side to building an AI that will usher in AGI that will ultimately lead to ASI. It is then that our opportunities (or troubles) will truly begin!

Hey, less than $5.00 for a really well written and researched book is a bargain, especially if it is a good read!! O0

Anyone pursuing AI should take a read. ;) (IMHO) ^-^
