The Lake House
« on: December 14, 2007, 03:20:21 am »
Ok, really not sure where to start on this one, is it a romance film? Is it sci fi?

Well..its both, in a round about kind of way.

Why I am going to do a review of it, well to put it simply, Ive now watched this the last 2 nights running and its quite simply sublime and beautiful.

The premise of the filom is that Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock) leaves her home by the lake to move back to the big city. In doing so she leaves some 'mail' in the mail box for the next tennent. This just happens to be Alex Wiley (Keanu Reeves) who is rather confused by the contents of her letter and some time discrepancies.

This is now what sets the tone for the movie. In a way this is a time zone (Back and forth) film, with a romantic background. I really don't want to give too much away here, but we find out that Kate is in the present in (2006) and Alex is in the past (2004) and the two start to correspond and eventually fall in love.

The cinematography is breathtaking, and while the two main starts share very little 'screen time' together, their chemistry is better than when they worked together in Speed.

Also be prepared to weep, I'm a grown man and will admit this film got me big time the first showing, and also the second time round alos, but then I am a hopeless romantic.

Will they eventually discover how to get around the time problem so these lost souls can be together? I for one am not going to say, but do recommend that you catch you it yourselves.

Ok so its not exactly real sci fi, but who cares when a story is filmed, acted and shot so beautifully.

One to watch  ;)

Sounds very interesting. I like that kind of premise as well. Similar to Sliders,
Stargate SG-1, Land of the Lost (going back a FEW years), and others.

I didn't know Bullock was in this.  I saw her earlier this year in Premonition which also plays around with time.  I do like those kind of films too, probably my favourite at the moment is 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', with Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet.  Thats another one worth checking out.  Thanks for the review, it's off topic but I apprecieted it.

Lynn,

an analytical mind has a problem with it , but it was great!

You really shouldn't be so self deprecating!! ;D

I likewise heard it was a kind of "just let things happen" flick.

A friend told me that another file was of a similar vein called, "Frequency"
but I've yet to view it.

I send out letters in the mail and they get lost for years. No biggy. The mail service sucks. I guess I just don't like chick flicks. And that had chick flick written all over it. Myself dumb movies like that I wait until they come to TV, if I do watch them. Sorry if I offended anyone who did like the movie.

Lynn,
I was just plying a slight tease... ;)

I modified my previous posting as I had incorrectly shown the movie title as Fractured instead of
FREQUENCY.

Jack, I like to watch the occasional chick flick...
#1 - I like chicks
#2 - Sometimes one can gain some valuable insight for better dealing with them (good luck)
#3 - I'm secure with my manhood
#4 - Sometimes it's the only way to stay in good graces with your partner! :D

That's because you are a gentleman Art.  I used to go out with a girl that liked foreign language films...much more than I...I found them ok but I would soon get eyestrain and fall asleep.  This meant she would get her own back talking all the way through my own favourite films.  That really annoys me lol.

What exactly couldnt happen Alady?

If your referring to the mail box being somehow 'magical and a portal where time does not exist' then you may be right...but who's to say it cant happen?

If you were referring to them trying to eventually meet and 'catching up in time' then it can and does happen. If you would like a full explanation I can PM you (so as not to give away any spoilers for those who have not yet seen it)

As for the film itself, ultimatly the mailbox is a just an object to draw them together, its incidental to the atual story, its there more as a backdrop the main storyline itself.

And Freddy, Spotless Mind is a masterpice, not really a Jim fan myself, but when he plays it straight for once he is a good actor, and that is a cracking film :)

I'm sure a similar thing does happen.  It makes me think of all the times I go to webpages or a forum and find myself talking to someone who posted over three years ago.  Kind of interesting how the net is actually changing time a little and on a large scale too.  Who knows how long our words will remain on the net - maybe forever.

Freddy,

I've been called a lot of things in the past but...
A gentleman? A gentleman? Why you...you...thank you although I never quite see
myself as such.

My philosophy is to be as kind or nice to everybody as I'd expect or at least like
them to be to me. I always like to add some humor to the mix whenever I can.

Life is short, life is difficult and everyone has some burden in their life to bear.
If I can at least get a smile or nod of approval from them, then I've done my part.

As one gets older and sees more of life change around them from what used to
be "the good old days", the more sadder and displaced feeling we often get. This
phenomena happens with every generation past and will continue to happen.
It is just life. Accept it, enjoy it, share it and be thankful for it, for one day it,
like all things will end.

Help someone, say Hi to a stranger. We're all on this journey together. It's a shame
we all just can't get along for very long.

Make yours a good day!

Happy Holidays to all !
