WALL-E The Trash Terminator

Pixar's Wall-E will hit the screens on June 27, 2008 and the
teaser trailer
is now available.
Wall-E is the story of a robot left on Earth to clean up the mess
made by human consumerism.
According to the premise outlined at Wikipedia,
the automated cleanup of the trash-covered Earth fails leaving a single
robot who ultimately discovers his special purpose.

Hmm...has the robot rights movement/argument finally made it into childrens films ?  Now we will have to do some talking!

Just checked out the trailer...wonder if Pixar bought the rights to Short Circuit?

Anyone else see any similarities to Number 5 there?

I guess it is unlikely that anyone has missed the build up to the new Pixar animated movie about a long lost robot, unless of course it has faded from view due to all of the other animated movies around at the moment.  Just in case though, here you can find a trailer and the main site:

http://www2.disney.co.uk/DisneyMovies/Walle/

It does look like it might be fun.

I've seen the 3-4 trailers of it and it does seem like it should be a fun view for all ages.

Can't wait to see it. 1. for the animation aspect . 2. for the robotic application. 3. for the fun of it!

Life's too short...have some fun!

Yes I agree Art, I think I will go and see this one, the animation looks excellent too.  He does look like Number 5 too Mav.

Other that the fact that Johnny 5 and Wall-e both have similar "tank-type" treads and modified binocular types of eyes,
I really don't see too much. They have different end effectors (hand grippers) and personalities.

Given the limited field of available hardware for robot types the mentioned similarities really don't surprise me that much.

Tracks are much better than wheels for mobility and are less prone to tipping as are wheels.

You be the judge....

Yes, similiar but still different.  I must admit though that at first I thought the film was related to the films about Number Five..

What I would like to point out is that robot films (like TOBOR) were often "Oh no! The Robots are going to kill us all! There are some things Man is not meant to know!

And, now, seriously, look, we have WALL-E. I, Robot was a bit like the films mentioned above, but it provided reasons (Asmiov's Zeroth law; instead of just 'KILL KILL KILLL!!!!!!!')

My youngest nephew, William, may very soon grow up into a world inhabited by these creations.

Oh boy Freddy - You have opened up a can of worms now!  :D I was hoping these issues would be still several years away. But it seems the debate has arrived and is on. So I can't put it on the back burner much longer! :-\

Datahopa suggested a thread be opened on this ( in another thread) and I think it may be time. TikaC has also been bringing up some interesting points on this issue. So a single thread gathering it all together would probably be a good idea.

I'm working on a thread "Rights and Responsibilities of Artificial Lifeforms."  It will focus on autonomous robots and chatbots.

That's right! Don't think autonomous, thinking Chatbots are not a part of this issue too!!  :o ??? :-\ ;D

Yep a big can of worms :o

I agree too that this subject seems to be gaining some momentum now, a new thread sounds wise :)

I finally got around to watching this last night.  Excellent film and fun for every one I would guess.

The robots are so funny and the animation is superb, some of it looked fantastic and with so much detail - almost like you could touch it.  Very little dialogue apart from the humans but they were still able to convey emotion and expression.

I won't spoil it and I am not great as a film critic, but in my opinion well worth watching and especially good in HD.

I also watched this movie recently, it surprised me a bit, very good. I think, the relationship between the humans and bots had some truth in it.
