Researchers have developed a new artificially intelligent system that crowdsources plots for interactive stories, which are popular in video games and let players choose different branching story options.

You could view every page of a gamebook as a pattern in a hopfield net,  and the options all share the same pattern, and are equally generatable from that point.

I always thought AIML would be good for interactive books like The Warlock of Firetop Mountain.

You get a lot of "interactive video" games on kinect as well... that are like game books.

It is. I once started converting one of those books to AIML with a few variables for things like strength, agility but never finished it due to time constraints. There was quite some interest a few years back in interactive fiction, I haven't looked into it lately but there were communities online. It's something that I would like to try too but like you say, time is usually the issue.
