                    New research suggests that fish can recognize human faces, putting to bed a previous theory that only animals with large brains, like primates, can accomplish such a complex task. The research, published in the journal Scientific Reports, was led by Canadian scientist Dr. Cait Newport, who is a Marie Curie Research Fellow in the Department of Zoology at the University of Oxford in England.

OK, so where did this notion come from that Goldfish only have a 3 second memory?

It's a myth.

Mythbusters proved they have longer memory as they trained them to navigate a maze each day to get their food. Once they learnt the maze, they went the quickest route.

Also my fish know it's feeding time when the lights come on, if they only had a few seconds memory how would they know the difference day after day.

Freddy, what you've got is Pavlov's Fish...or Freddy's Fish. They're conditioned to a stimulus / response situation.
Bell ring / dog salivates ...light on / fish swim to top for food.

This really doesn't prove memory does it?

If I turned a different light on at a different time of day then approached their tank, I'd bet they would still swim near the surface to get food. They're conditioned. Just throwing out my take.

It is however, unlikely, given the distance between us, that I'll ever get to carry out this experiment...but....

I'm not sure to be honest about the technicalities but surely retaining information in the brain is what we call memory ?

I do understand the Pavlov's dogs experiment, like the way humans have to answer phones. If the dogs didn't remember about the food they would get, what do we call that act of information retention ? Where is it stored if not in memory ?

In short; Okay the dogs have become conditioned, but doesn't memory play a part in that ?

Right, and the conditioning has to take place in the recesses of the mind, whether in the dog's, fishes' or yours and mine. That cause and effect has to be stored then remembered else it would need to be reinforced each and every time it was presented. The mysterious mind...our memory.

A lifetime of years to accumulate and only months to a few years of Dementia or Alzheimer's to block off / wipe away like it was never there. I have to wonder about a memory. If learned, how then can it be unlearned or removed? It's like taking back your fingerprint once the ink was put to paper. Don't know...can't say for sure.

At any rate...Good for Dory!
