Watch TV's turn into big boxes again. But this time to everyone's approval!

I remember seeing a blurb about possible 3D TVs in Popular Science circa 15 years ago. For some reason, they still haven't materialized.

True 3D seems like it would require more information than current recording equipment can provide. Though there are increasing numbers of animated shows and CGI movies coming out these days. These might adapt more readily to a 3D TV format. I’m guessing such a display may require transparent components, which could make it heavy, and/or spinning components which could make it inefficient, noisy, and prone to failure. Nevertheless, if someone figures this out it would be super cool!

Simulated 3D seems to be a hit and miss. I often hear moviegoers expressing ambivalence or even preferring the regular movie experience. Not exactly sure what the problem is, excessive novelty discomfort, motion sickness, informational overload, some type of visual uncanny valley, the need for glasses? There’s also something called an autostereoscopic display, which basically puts the left eye – right eye filter on the screen. But so far, this introduces some compromises, (you can either have a display with eye-tracking which moves the filter to accommodate a single viewer, or a static filter which works for multiple viewers but only at specific angles,) which, as far as I can tell, is why autostereoscopic displays haven’t become more popular.

Personally, I’d go for a VR headset. I just recently got the first episode of the Vader Immortal game on VR and have been trying it out with my brother. Now THERE’S an experience. Even a kid at a difficult age was impressed. (You can check out some playthroughs on YouTube.)

I've seen a few 3D theater movies and would also describe my reaction as "ambivalent." It wasn't a bad experience in any way, but it usually didn't feel worth the surcharge. The effect is neat at first, but a little way into the film I stop noticing it ... as if my brain has adjusted and decided to ignore that layer of information. I also think I remember (it's been a long time) some mild negative side effects, like blurring of some parts of the scene.

I think it's more interesting if filmmakers design for 3D and make objects "come out of the screen" at the viewer, etc. But as an enhancement for regular films, I don't know if it's worth it.

I agree that VR headsets are the hot stuff.
