Disinformation campaigns are not new — think of wartime propaganda used to sway public opinion against an enemy. What is new, however, is the use of the internet and social media to spread these campaigns. The spread of disinformation via social media has the power to change elections, strengthen conspiracy theories, and sow discord.

I would have liked to know how they identify disinformation in the first place but they carefully avoid defining what it is. Rather, they seem more concerned with identifying the sources which actually have the most influence (distinct from the fake metrics that marketers use to bill their clients) so the humans pulling the strings of this system can decide whether to let them have their way or not. I would be more interested in a system that can filter out all the lies no matter where they're coming from, but I expect such a thing would never be allowed out of the lab.
