Complex environments push 'brain' evolution
29 January 2015, 9:08 pm

Little animations trying to master a computer game are teaching neuroscience researchers how the brain evolves when faced with difficult tasks. Neuroscientists have programmed animated critters that they call 'animats.' The critters have a rudimentary neural system made of eight nodes: two sensors, two motors, and four internal computers that coordinate sensation, movement and memory.

I have actually been suggesting this for a while here - that the environment pushed simples organisms such as our ancestors to evolve a complex neural network such as our brains. I am enjoying myself, seeing that this is now being confirmed.

Ultron7, you might be interested in genetic algorithms, see the link: http://www.ai-junkie.com/ga/intro/gat1.html

Other sections on the same site seem interesting too (finite state machine), just hit the "home" button at the bottom and navigate through.

Interesting read. Very nicely written illustration of evolution. Could save me a lot of explaining some day x)

But do note I have a certain hate towards studying biology, although I do realize combining it with computer science can be more than rewarding for both fields. At the moment I am only exploring the theoretical concepts behind the mind, from both points of view. I do intend to read this whole page though, it got me interested.

Thanks moony!
