EU to vote on declaring robots to be 'electronic persons'

MEPs have voted to propose granting legal status to robots, categorising them as "electronic persons" and warning that new legislation is needed to focus on how the machines can be held responsible for their "acts or omissions".   ...   Ms Delvaux-Stehres's resolution was easily passed by the European Parliament's legal affairs committee, and a vote by the full parliament on the resolution is likely to take place in February.

To me the fact that such a notion was even proposed or brought forth for adoption this soon in a robotic and android environment, speaks loudly of uninformed, media-induced hysteria.

Sorry folks but Hollywood and other humanoids and synths just aren't quite ready for "prime time".

Give it at least another 5 or 10 years, then try again.

The headline is taking quite some liberties. I've skimmed the report and it's about assigning "corporate personhood", which is about legal liability, not so much about robot rights. Companies also have corporate personhood even though they are not living entities. They are especially considering liability rules for self-driving cars, which is a here-and-now issue at least.

That said, I was very surprised to see them quote Asimov's laws of robotics as something for creators to adhere to, and lay out the Terminator plot as possible within two decades. It doesn't sound like they consulted actual AI developers, and I am frankly embarrassed.
