I saw this post and even though it is old I thought it was worthwhile to bring up again. Self awareness like intelligence is difficult to define as it is inherently bias towards humans. We tend to measure everything based on our own intelligence. This to me is kinda arrogant on our parts. So even if self awareness developed in a AI would we even acknowledge it let alone recognize it?

Good point but for me, I'm sort of from Missouri in that I'd have to be shown in order to personally validate whether I felt it was or not.
Some others might just assume it to be smarter than the normal run-of-the-mill A.I. agents / devices while others might believe it to be controlled from elsewhere by humans.

It's a mixed bag no matter how you shake it.

Thing is, if it really is Self Aware, we'd better tread lightly until we get a handle on the situation.
