Johns Hopkins scientists have discovered to their surprise that nerves in the mammalian brain's white matter do more than just ferry information between different brain regions, but in fact process information the way gray matter cells do....

This article led to another interesting article.
How when an area of the brain is damaged or distroyed by stroke or other means, that the brain realizes this and will transfer or begin that activity in another area of the brain.

The brain can rapidly reorganise to recover from damage
