One question that gave me an eyebrow raise was this one:

7.If Alex lent money to Joe because they were broke, who needed the money?

"They" who?
To my way of thinking, Joe is a singular individual therefore why use the wording "they" instead of the more proper "he" was broke, ....

Trick question or an overlooked misusage? Hmm...

I raised an eyebrow at the use of "they" too. I know Shakespeare used it as singular sometimes, and it is actually used to refer to a singular unspecified person (e.g. in a hypothetical story), but I've never seen it applied to a singular and named person. You'd think the question was tricky enough by itself. I suspect they thought too hard about coming up with an ambiguous pronoun.
And by "they", I mean the one or multiple nondescript people who devised the questions.

Where I live we might say something like...

"They bought a Mac ? Why did they do that ?"

For people we don't know mainly.

Usually if you know the person you would say "he" though.
