                    Sleepiness and stress are perennial risks for the long distance lorry driver, and accidents are sadly too frequent. However, a radical new driverless truck being trialled by Daimler may offer a solution.

Imagine stopping at a junction on a dual carriageway where it drops from 70 to 0 mph within a few hundred meters and seeing a eighteen wheel, 40 tonne AI driven truck coming up behind you... err... no thanks.

Sleep-depraved truck drivers have caused many deaths, and sleep-deprivation comes with the job. So yes I would prefer an AI that stays alert over a human. I would also prefer that the replacement of humans is done gradually and benefits all of the public including the ex-drivers, instead of just the CEO taking all the profits. Unfortunately that's not how current society works, and I think we'll have quite some protests and chaos on the streets before we come to terms with our new technology.

When I was a student I used to hitch hike around a lot. One time I got a lift from a lorry driver. The cab was really hot and I was talking to him for a while. Things went quiet, then there was a rumbling from those bumpy bits they put on the side of the carriage way. I looked across and he had fallen asleep. Gladly the bumps woke him up and I talked to him more to keep him awake. I was glad to get out of there.
