Title: March 15th the 2011 Chatterbox Challenge Deadline
Post by: Thunder on February 09, 2011, 07:20:05 pm
In case you haven't heard, the 2011 Chatterbox Challenge is open and accepting contestants.  Several rule changes should allow a lot more bots to enter (no clone restriction) and a top prize of $1,000, thanks to new sponsorship, is expected to draw lots of competitors.  There's also a return to Public Voting, which affords all bots an equal chance at proving their popularity.

This is a chance for any botmaster of any bot to gain recognition for hard work, creative thinking, and for putting in a lot of long hours.

The entry deadline is March 15th.

CLICK HERE (http://www.daniellechuchran.com/contest_rules.html) to read the rules.

Thanks Thunder, you should pop in more often  :)

I know GeekCaveCreations is entering, not sure about our other bot creators yet though.

I wasn't going to after getting disqualified last year but I guess the lure of $1,000 heals old wounds!  :D

Steve,

You really should. Look upon this as a new opportunity with a fresh, clean slate!!

A lot of life is about "missed opportunities" and trying not to have them!!

You can quote me on that if you want!  ;D ::)

Well, Mitsuku is a lot sexier than Morti, but I think Morti has the better (well, more entertaining) personality. ALICE is a grand old lady, but I'm tired of hearing about her green dress. Jaberwacky is just confused, and Chompsky has no sense of humor. Do I think Morti has a shot at the title? Probably not. Do I want him to at least do well, or even possibly win? ab~so~LUTELY!!! :waveJump:

I've entered this year. Mostly to get some experience and exposure, cause Aici isn't nearly ready for prime time.
@ squearebear: I know there were some troubles last year (don't know the details though), but why exactly did they disqualify you last year?

@ squearebear: I know there were some troubles last year (don't know the details though), but why exactly did they disqualify you last year?

I hope my friend Square Bear doesn't mind my responding to your question.

There was (and is no longer) a rule against entering clones.  That meant that no more than one Pandorabot could enter and since Pandorabots are mainly ALICE, that cut the rest of us out.  It's not sour grapes, I'm just reporting, but several "clone" bots slipped through the cracks and made it into the finals even after Mitsuku left the competition, and not only AIML bots.  Some made the argument that the best known AIML bots had been substantially altered, and were not merely clones of ALICE.  At the time of Mituku's disqualification, she was in the lead in the final round... even ahead of ALICE.  Truly, the disqualification (based on one question) was a fluke and shouldn't have occurred

Lots of us complained about the infamous "clone rule" and this year it's been dropped.  The contest organizer is hoping that this will lead to a large number of bots entered which will, in turn, will offer the sponsor greater exposure.  The key to keeping the contest coming back next year is, no doubt, having a large field of entrants this year.  If you have any friends with chatbots, you might encourage them to enter.

I see. Makes sense to allow everyone. If you spend the time at it. I talked a little with Mitsuku and I wouldn't have said it was based on AIML. I had expected more something like what Bruce is using (it was picking up repetition in the questions nicely). It's a very good bot.
I've already been poking here and there to get people to enter. 50% luck so far  ;)

To be honest, I wouldn't mind at all if a few folks stopped in and chatted with Morti a bit, so that I could generate some new conversation logs to go over. That would help me to locate and correct some responses that may need improvement. And, of course, I'd be more than willing to return the favor, should someone else ask. :)

Thanks Thunder for explaining. Saves me a lot of typing!

Dave(GeekCaveCreations) - Do you want me to promote Morti through one of MItsuku's pickup lines? She says a few random lines when a user connects to her. I can soon change one of them to "Do you want to chat to my friend Morti"? I did this for a few other chatbots in the past and their owners reported that it was useful.

That would be awesome, Steve (SquareBear)! In return, I'll see about doing the same for Mitsuku. :) We'll form our own little "mutual admiration society". :P

Of course, I'm still working on some technical issues, so don't be surprised if your visits turn up some odd responses, or error messages. I'm working my tail feathers off to get them fixed.

Post by: squarebear on February 12, 2011, 06:08:02 pm
Ok that is now set up. She will ask 1 in 5 people if they wish to talk to Morti and open Morti's website if they say yes. I get all sorts of visitors to Mitsuku, some sensible and some not, so you might get a mixed bag of logs to check.

Hope it helps.

Very nice of you SquareBear :)

Actually, while you are about; I was wondering about putting your site with all the AIML code in the Member's Project page here.  Let me know if you are interested.  Would need an image the same size as the ones we are already using...

LOL Morti is going up against a fictional god (Vashenka), and a pop singer (Taylor Swift)? What's next? A political figure?  :uglystupid2: Someone needs to make an ObamaBot.  >:D

Haha  ;D

The closest I got to a political bot was when I made a Haptek avatar of Abraham Lincoln.  It was for a site that wanted to use him to sell cars....go figure.  I forget who said 'Never trust a car salesman'...

Yeah but anyone would never question a car from good old "Honest Abe", because like spock, he does not lie! Obviously neither of them should have ever gone into politics... Look where it got Abe...on a penny and a $5.00 piece of almost worthless paper! Oh did I mention shot? :-\

Let's not forget the Ides of March on the 15th!! (refer to Julius Caesar).

Somehow, this year it feels as if the Stygian Witches are whispering my name. I just wish they wouldn't giggle like schoolgirls when they do.  :smile5:

Nine days to go, and I'm not quite halfway done with my list of "fixes" for Morti.   :( I think, though, that I'm ready to upgrade Morti's "person swap" function. It's a little slow still, but all things considered, it's an improvement over what he uses now.
Title: Re: March 15th the 2011 Chatterbox Challenge Deadline
Post by: DaveMorton on March 14, 2011, 01:55:52 am
It's now Sunday, the 13th of March, and there are less than 2 days until the CBC entry deadline. Currently, there are 38 entries listed on the official website (http://www.chatterboxchallenge.com/), but I suspect that number will change, with "under the wire" entries possibly being added before Tuesday. I think Morti's major bugs are all "whipped into shape", but a little more testing can't hurt, so if you have time, I invite and encourage you to chat with Morti (http://www.geekcavecreations.com/Morti/?debug), so that I can perhaps catch any bugs, or responses that need improvement. Thanks, all. :)

Of course, the "fair" thing to do would be to recommend spending some time with the competition, as well, but I'm not always a "fair" person. :P

Also, to those who have already stopped by and helped me out (you know who you are!) my most profound thanks. Morti truly stands improved through your efforts.

Something seems amiss here as I've chatted with All the bots listed and do not think my results concur with some of those in the top eleven. Then again...you're correct...I'm not a judge...Luckily for some!

Yes, part of the rules say that the judges may use shorthand text words like "ur" and "brb".
Title: Re: March 15th the 2011 Chatterbox Challenge Deadline
Post by: Art on April 03, 2011, 08:33:28 pm
Sorry but to me that's NOT proper English and probably more difficult to get a bot to understand such slangish shorthand!! There goes the neighborhood and the mentality to boot!!
Title: Re: March 15th the 2011 Chatterbox Challenge Deadline
Post by: squarebear on April 03, 2011, 09:53:54 pm
Shorthand/text speak is a bit of a dividing issue. I personally accept it in my bots, as the average age of people who speak to them seems to be around 14. If I were to turn away all the people who said, "awrite m8", I would have 90% less chatlogs to work with.

However, even Mitsuku struggled when she found this in her chatlog:

"ryt funny lol we was lookin out da window wen da spider came crawlin down lol nd we wo starin a ppl walkin by nd 1 stared bk nd we both pulled a funny face at her".

I daren't imagine where to start coding with that one!  :o

Try to get a passing mark from your college English professors with a sentence like that!

NEXT, try submitting a business report to your boss using that drivel!!

Glad I don't have to stick around for another 40 years!

I suppose though that language is constantly evolving and changing. Take the word "gay" for example. If you said you were gay last century, it would mean you were happy. However today, try telling the bruiser in your local bar that he looks gay and see what happens!

I guess if language didn't evolve, we would still be saying, "verily" and "gadzooks"!

Post by: Data on April 04, 2011, 01:23:42 pm
It’s not just me then.

I think some are ok, like lol, we never say “laughs out loud” so lol has added something to our language, but to just shorten words, like why to Y, well that’s just lazy isn’t it.

OK you can get away with them in a phone txt message if you are running out of space. Maybe  :D

Squarebear said: "...If I were to turn away all the people who said, "awrite m8", I would have 90% less chatlogs to work with."

Perhaps but at least you'd be able to understand the remaining ones and they would also likely be more worthy (dare I say intelligent) for consideration.

Remember, it's about QUALITY...not Quantity...at least in my book.

YMMV, K?, U gud wi dat? ::)

And what's wrong with that? Granted, "verily" isn't in my "common vocabulary", but I use "Gad ZOOKS!" a lot, at home. :) Of course, I use "Poit!" a lot, too.

Just an opinion, but anyone who goes through 12 years of schooling and can't read or write and can only speak jive talk has got to be sub-human.

My wife continues to say that, "I vex her", yet none of MItsuku's visitors says the word "vex". Should I add this to my list of words such as, "forsooth" and "She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me; I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. You had better return to your partner and enjoy her smiles, for you are wasting your time with me." instead of "do you wanna go out wiv mee"  :D

Suddenly, I'm of a mind to create a chatbot that uses anachronistic speech, and seems to be "lost in the 80's" - the 1580's!
I'll have to think on this a while. Hmmmmm............  8)
