"One of the models [Gordon] Bell is interested in is proposed by the work of a principal researcher at Microsoft named Eric Horvitz. Horvitz is engaged in what he calls 'complementary computing, where the computer understands human limitations and fills in the gaps,' he told me in his office, in Redmond. Horvitz, who is the president-elect of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence -- 'triple-A. I.,' he says -- would like to see computers provide 'a fabric that would extend us in areas where we're weak.'"
