Eerily lifelike robots will walk among us in just 20 years - if they don't destroy us first: Humanoid called Sophia reveals 'her aspirations' in an interview with her maker
17 March 2016, 12:00 am

The threats, and benefits, of artificial intelligence are discussed almost on a daily basis, but now the view of one robot has been revealed from its own mouth. When quizzed by robotics designer David Hanson, an eerie-looking humanoid called Sophia revealed 'she would like to go to school, have a family...and destroy humans.

That comment was a lot like the one a early windows version of Alice used to make. If they are using AIML then i am not surprised by the comment.
So sue me

That "technology" with those 'robots' and 'frubber' is about a decade old. Hanson had a robotics / android company in Texas many years ago. He was going to sell a small robot toy, "Zeno" that could talk, answer questions, check the Internet, etc. and be your friend but it never materialized into circulation. David is quite a skilled artist having worked for Disney's imagineering in the late 90's. Check out www.hansonrobotics.com

Yep. I double-checked the facts I remembered before I posted. I think Hanson Robotics is the best in the area of cosmetic robotics, but they have always used ordinary chatbot systems for conversation, they don't do much work on A.I. themselves.
e.g. one of their most advanced robots uses Personality Forge: http://www.hansonrobotics.com/robot/jules
Zeno was used hither and yon in classes, but it has indeed been something like 5 years since I've heard of it. NAO robots probably took its spot on the market. It's too bad they redesigned Zeno after the version in that video. its facial animation reminded me of Disney's Tinkerbell movies. Now it makes sense if one of them worked for Disney  :). I didn't know that.

Sadly, Sony's Qrio (Curio) was one of the most advanced "small" bots I've seen. The unfortunately high price tag must have contributed to its demise / removed from production and shelved.
Qrio had facial recognition, an impressive brain and vocabulary, exceptional balance and a very likable personality (bot speaking of course).

Here are a few videos I found:
