                    Companies like Google and Tesla have held up autonomous vehicles as a panacea for road accidents, which claim over 32,000 American lives each year. This month, Obama put stock in that idea, signing a $305bn transportation bill that includes grants for self driving vehicles.

Actually, I don't believe people too much when it comes to driving. They drive too fast, they drive drunk, they phone and drive... a lot of other combinations and they are not funny, they take lives.

We'll see if computers can do any better...

Ivan, I honestly agree with you on this one!

THEN ... The computer A.I. moves into...the Courtroom! Matter will be weighed honestly, based on facts, with no plea deals, pay-offs, bargains of any kind. The time fits the crime...or something like that.

lol. Considering that a recent story showed how poorly the driverless does in real traffic I agree with you there.

But when driverless cars come to about safe driving, which programmer could sleep quietly knowing that there is always a space for creepy bugs which can show up God knows when (meanwhile, today I just fixed one bug in a year old parser...)

I think where there are a number of possible "What-if" scenarios that could happen, hopefully, the car and designer will be able to cope with them.
