Update on the Second Life AI Lab.
« on: September 11, 2008, 02:50:03 pm »
Well, the AI lab went through several moves and redesigns.

A total of sixteen experiments (all of them looking at human-machine interaction) were carried out.

Sadly, however, I've grown to start to hate Second Life; I was approached five times by 'Virtual Hookers', looking to sell their services within the lab, after refusing they just hung around outside my land (outside of my ability to ban them from it) with signs. I logged on one day to find my lab being attacked by self-replicating high-bandwidth robots (oh, the irony!) Coupled with the 32-byte limit on any program (which has allowed a good chess AI and a remake of Conway's Game of Life) there isnt much to do.  I spent nearly 600 putting it all together.

So, I will release the results of my experiments shortly, but beforelong I dont think I'll count on the Second Life public (where I was attacked by a toga-wearing avatar talking in spanish, he was hitting me with a oversized male reproductive organ) for support.

The final straw came when my land-lord (after having some problems configuing the land) decided to evict myself and destroy my lab, for no other reason other then 'the regio was reset' which strangly did not affect my neighbours.

*sigh*

Oh dear, virtual life sounds a lot worse than reality to me.  I just never 'got' SL although I went on there a fair bit at first.  In the end I just found it too sloppy and sluggish to give it much of my time.  I don't like the sound of your experiences either.  I would be interested in seeing you results though.

Echo Freddy's words...very 80's and unprofessional, and Linden Labs don't care who is in their world as long as the bucks keep rolling in.

Quite; though two Lindens (the 'game gods of SL') were very good; Babbage Linden (aptly named, he was responsible for recreating ALICE in LSL) and Zero Linden (who generally deals with all new tech and has a soft spot for bots)

So ye, frankly, I give up on Virutal worlds, I'll wait until there is a proper release of the AGI Sim to do my experiments;  if you know of any 'virtual worlds' that could run on one computer (or, better yet, we could all log into the same 'virtual world' hosted on a server we only have access too) then do tell.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune but it was bound to happen just like the newsgroups that were
a great resource are now a vast playground for spammers, porn kiddies and advertisements of
all kinds.

I work too hard for my money in the REAL world so I sure as heck don't feel like spending it in a
virtual one only to get trashed by some kid with a temper tantrum.

 :(
In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

Oooh, I was lucky! I had a friend who was part of what was known as the Justice League, she was very kind and helpful and was more then happy to get rid of troublesome people. If it hadnt been for her I wouldnt of suriviced two mins.

Also, side note; it's useful to buy some translation software for use in-world, some people are interested.

I did meet a number of people from AI's golden age, I spent a great deal of time bringing them up to speed. One of them was a very nice chap who had programmed and built that chess playing computer (despite having 16k of memory avaible, it could still see 8 moves ahead by any piece)

I think Virtual Worlds are useful, but I would rather go on something a bit more cheap, a lot more stable, a lot more friendly to AI ( the first time I got attacked was by two 'newbies' who thought I created viruses and bot-nets, not chatter-bots and expermental devices) and a little less politically hot (scientology abounded, as did extremeist relgions. the US started an operation to purge terrorists from virtual worlds, copyright laws were broken frequently...)

Ok, rant over :p

I can't think of any except for gaming worlds, which incedentally I much prefer over SL.  I think there is less trouble in worlds like Kaneva, but I have yet to try that one, it's been on my back burner for months now, just haven't had the time.

The more I hear about SL the less I like it lol
