Title: Upgrade
Post by: Freddy on May 02, 2011, 11:40:04 pm
So it seems the upgrade went okay.  We are now on SMF 2.  Please report any issues.

At the moment we just have the forum, I will add the other features to the site over the next week.

I feel I want to review what members want to see on the site.

What features that we had on the old site can you not live without ?

I will be reinstating the gallery, using a new system - all the images have been saved.  That is certain.

What else would you like to see restored ?

Many thanks :)

Also, I hope people like the new theme or 'look' of the site.

It's designed by a friend of mine called Bloc.  I chose it because I thought it was nice and fresh.  It has some cool features too, like showing avatars in various places.  Also if you go into a board now, if you hover over the subject of a message it will show you the first few lines.

My thanks go to Bloc :)

It has a bold, clean, fresh look.

I liked it at first glance when logging on!!

Good work and tip of the hat to Bloc as well!! O0

Well for those that are confused you will be glad I didn't choose another one that turned the site into something like a wiki - boy was that confusing, I couldn't find anything.  So I went from something that was not a great departure from the old theme but with a few more modern features.  You will get used to it ! lol

@Data, ok thanks, yes those things definitely need to be restored.  For TP I am waiting on an update at the moment.  YouTube button, yes on my list already and the site map too which I had forgotten about so thanks.

Spam filters too - registration is off at the moment, but that will be in place before it gets turned on again.

Sounds good Freddy  :)

When I’m clicking internal links on AiDreams they are opening a new tab.

I don’t know if you had it before, but there is a mod that makes internal links open in the same window, personally I much prefer that to opening a new tab or window.
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Freddy on May 03, 2011, 01:35:28 pm
As far as I recall it always did that but I will look into it.

Links can be set to open in the same window by using the

Code
[iurl]

bbc tag...

Everyone finding the new gallery section okay and is it working alright ?

It's the 'media' button up top if you hadn't spotted it yet.  ;)
Title: Re: Upgrade

Now that it's been pointed out, I did. :) Looks fine, and seems to work well. I like the random image selections.
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Data on May 04, 2011, 02:45:40 pm
Yeah! I too spotted the 'media' button  last night, had a little look around, some nice new features, took me a while to work out the albums are what was the categories.

Its good, I like it O0
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Freddy on May 04, 2011, 02:54:30 pm
Cool.  Yes takes a little getting used too but I think it is better than the old gallery.

I too took a while to figure out I had to click the 'Albums' button to see everything.

I can promote albums to the media home page (where the random images and such like are) if needed, but I am working on other stuff at the moment.

I do like that we can now see recent comments too.  With the old gallery you never knew if anyone commented unless you went through everything all the time, far too time consuming for me.

All of that is now done with the exception of TP.  I'm trying out the new TP on my test forum first, but I am going to get Mav's Digital Girl story up and running first.

Links to the Chatterbot Collection and Datahopa now appear within the main board as redirects, as will the DG story later.

Dear Freddy, Aidream' s is now in format flash, after my idea, flash job with ' MetaScript ', it is a similar window, has this one, and favours it, it is the interactivity, of a link, either, Script, Flash, and broadcasting, or the account, on a topic, is, in format SWF, GIF, video from the computer, or only, MP3. Numerous possibilities with Flash. O0

I don't plan on using Flash for the site at the moment Claude but thanks for the tip.  Maybe some day though...
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Freddy on May 05, 2011, 01:12:13 pm
The Digital Girl story is now back online.  I moved it to it's own page and knocked up a quick design.  Maviarab will be working on a dedicated site in a couple of months too.

The story had an average of about 7,500 views in the old format  8)

Look in the main forum for the link at the bottom, under friends...

Generally speaking, when I refer someone to the forums here (and I've done so a goodly number of times), I send them to the main page, since there's more to this place than just the forums. :) the only exception is my links page on my site, but nobody reads that page much, except for the search engine crawlers.  :-\

Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Maviarab on May 08, 2011, 02:42:58 pm
Just to update...

Everything working fine for me here.  Gallery looks great, love it.

Thanks again for getting the story back up...even though it's a little dead in the water at the oment, but have talked to your recently regarding that anway.

For everyone else, have my own site (the old digital Girl domain)...but that too was also hacked some months back (last year) and I really have not had the time to look into it.  My course is coming to end so I am hoping to get my site finished and up and running fully this summer, where the new revised and edited version of the story will go along with new chapters etc.

freddy and I have discussed what to do with the current version, and we have nt really come up with any concrete ideas yet, but it might be nice to keep her where she currently is on this site, and I can always post here and link to the new chapters...but whatever....thats 2 or 3 months away yet.

Finally, thanks for all your hard work freddy, it truly is appreciated, and once again, the site is currently looking great :)

I was away for the weekend and just logged on to check things and to see if anyone missed me! :'(

OK...kidding...

What really grabbed my attention was the NEW Landing / Splash plage (as opposed to the Splash landing page...oops!).

I REALLY LOVE IT!! Nice and clean, quite professional and tells it all! A very likable page and after all, the first page to
a site can set the tone for the rest of the user's viewing experience.

Very well done!!!

@Mav, glad to hear things are working right and you like the new gallery.  We couldn't miss out on the story so I was happy to rehouse it.  I'm thinking maybe we should just have one story on your site in the future.  Reason is that it will be confusing having two versions of the same story floating around.

Good luck with the course, I know you can do it  O0

Art, I'm really glad you like the new landing page, I spent quite a long time messing around with designs until I found something I thought looked good.  Many thanks :)

And finally, we now have a new home page that I had been working on.  I will add further things to the home page over the next few days.  So far you should see a welcome message, online people, news, aggregated news (from six sources) and the latest from the chatterbot collection.

I've decided not to use Tiny Portal at the moment as I don't think we really need it.  I can code custom things, like I have with the homepage, myself.  Really I want to develop my programming skills, so a few new features will be coded just by me.

Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Data on May 10, 2011, 11:19:20 am
It’s all looking good

I was just thinking about the old days of the web, where people’s web sites had something like.

Hello my name is John and this site is all about me

Hehe… remember?

Haven’t we come a long way since then.

Anyway, are you up for some constructive criticism? I hope so.

One of the things that attracted me to AiDreams was the recent topics block being used in TP, the topics were on screen even when looking through the forum and navigation between them was a single click and easy.

Now im clicking back to the forum index all the time to read the recent posts.

Maybe you can come up with something like that for the new layout. I know its not all about me, but I do miss it.
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: DaveMorton on May 10, 2011, 11:55:26 am
I have to second that, I'm afraid. With the old forums, a page refresh allowed me to monitor new posts more efficiently, and saved me a lot of time and effort over the way it is now. I'm not complaining, mind you (well, maybe I am, but only a little :D ), but I miss that aspect of the old design, as well.
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Freddy on May 10, 2011, 02:11:42 pm
How dare you, of course I can't do that  ;)

Only joking.  Yes I can replicate that by altering the main template I think.  It won't be just yet as I am working on a new article system at the moment.  I designed it from the ground up, but have built it so that the articles will show up on the same links as before as there were plenty of links in to those articles.

When I have finished that I will take a look at your request :)

Its hard to put into words how much I appreciate all your hard work Freddy, So I thought I would kill two birds with one stone, not that I think anyone should kill birds, no, no I like them too much, oops going off topic.

Anyway back to the two birds, that I haven’t killed.

And a test to see how to embed video.

Thank you. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ve_o2kq4_jY#)

Post by: Freddy on May 10, 2011, 10:39:55 pm
lol totally like awesome like  ;D

To have a break from my article mod I set about the task you two set me.  What a pain lol, much more work than anticipated but I think I got there.

I have adapted the side panel and rearranged the template so that I can easily add new blocks to it, so that is nice.

It's not throwing any errors for me, see how we get on with that.

It is set to display on the forum index, within a board and when actually viewing messages.  I think that should do it.

Tested in Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer...much preferring the new IE to the old ones.

Made the forum wider now too so it shows up okay in 1024.

Restricted YouTube videos to 450px as well so it fits on 1024.
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Data on May 10, 2011, 11:37:08 pm
You’ve done well, but what took you so long  :joker:

There is plenty of free space there now, maybe put in some other blocks with some goodies on, I have some ideas but I have a feeling you and others might too.
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: DaveMorton on May 10, 2011, 11:39:44 pm
That's just fine, Freddy. :) And I love the width now. It's roomier, and doesn't feel "cramped". Well done, Sir. Well done.

Cool :)

Data, yes there's plenty more room for further blocks, open to suggestions...one of them will be a recent articles block.  I don't want to put a lot of stats and things in here though.  I want to focus on content rather than gadgets.

Dave, many thanks :)

That's it for me today, see you tomorrow.  :wave:

A block that pulls information from the media section, latest picture, comments or whatever you can think of Freddy.

Only my opinion though  ;)

Ok I will look into it.  It never effects me as I never log out, but if that's gonna save your mouse then I will see what I can do ;)

And yes, a latest gallery block is on the to do list thanks :)

Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Freddy on May 11, 2011, 10:41:54 pm
Hehe no problem.

I'll finish off the article system first though.  It's going well at the moment, I think it's nearly there.  It does everything we need and will do PHP as well as HTML.

This afternoon and evening has seen me trawling through all the articles to see what's worth keeping.  I am honestly shocked by some of the code I wrote four or five years ago. Some of it makes me wonder how the page ever displayed correctly.  So that made more work, but I have now recoded all the articles and they all share the same format.

I should have it set up here tomorrow at some point if all goes well.  ^-^

Usually I post my gif's in the forum page itself, as I did "Window Shopping" (yesterday).   Just the media page here now that don't allow it.

Hummm...(thinking)   when i posted "Window Shopping" yesterday, I should have made it as attachment instead of linked pic. ........  but can click on pic for size change.
Life habit, always think after I do.    :)
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Freddy on May 12, 2011, 02:05:52 pm
Ah I see, I thought you meant Windows media player or something, sorry.

It does animate if you click to 'Click picture to view fullsize' :

Try it out on this one.

http://aidreams.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=315 (http://aidreams.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=315)
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: DaveMorton on May 12, 2011, 02:57:38 pm
That works. It animates well when viewed full size.
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Duskrider on May 12, 2011, 03:30:47 pm
wait a minute now
go up to media and click media
it show all the pics in there and won't go annimated.

I got feeling the pic you selected is in the forum itself and not gallery.   apples and oranges   :)
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Data on May 12, 2011, 03:49:33 pm
If you click the zoom button at the bottom of the picture I notice it does then load in the animated gif.
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Freddy on May 12, 2011, 04:13:34 pm
Yeah the zoom works too.

Dusky, the media section and the forum pictures are totally separate.  The image I linked to is in the media section.  Although you can link (embed) to a media image from the forum.

I can't make the thumbnails animate, it only seems to animate it when you fully load the image.  It seems the preview pictures (ie not full size) do what the say on the tin, in that it is just a preview...

I can add a message to the media page saying 'Click on full view to see any animations' or something like that.
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: DaveMorton on May 12, 2011, 05:31:22 pm
The reason that the images won't animate is because both the ImageMagic and GD2 PHP libraries don't support animated gif format when resizing the images. Unfortunately, there's only one option for Freddy here, to make the images animate all the time, and that's to use the image itself, and use HTML to set the size, which not only is a poor coding practice, but also produces poor results. Sorry, dusky, but it's best to just leave it as is, for now. :(
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Freddy on May 12, 2011, 06:01:23 pm
Yes and the person who made the media modification says that previews are used to lower bandwidth or in other words the amount of data the forum chugs out.  It makes sense to keep the forum snappy and to do that you need to control bandwidth.

I have enquired about settings to show images at full size anyway, as I limit the sizes to 1024, but that won't be good for people on a 1024 screen.

There always has to be a compromise unfortunately.
Title: Re: Upgrade
Post by: Duskrider on May 12, 2011, 09:07:47 pm

Ok, here goes.

While viewing the forums, Firefox complained (politely and quietly, of course) about some errors, and in reading the error console, and from doing some poking around, I've found the following problems in your stylesheet (In Themes/bluelight_smf20rc5b/css/index.css):

Code: CSS
CSS errors for AI Dreams:

.latest h3
{
font-family: tahoma, helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 1.6em;
color: #D37316             <---------No semicolon
font-weight: bold;
padding: 40px 0 20px 10px;
margin: 0;
}

p.fstyle
{
line-height: 1.5em;
font-size: 0.8;           <---------------- 0.8 what? Need cm, em, ex, in, mm, pc, pt or px  for any number value other than zero.
padding: 0;
margin: 0 0 2em 0;
}
p.fstyle2
{
line-height: 1.4em;
font-size: 0.8;          <---------------- See above, same issue
padding: 1em;
background: #f6f6f6;
border: solid 1px #d8d8d8;
margin: 1em 0 2em 0;
}
p.fstyle3
{
line-height: 1.6em;
font-size: 0.8;          <---------------- Yup! here, too. :(
padding: 0 1em;
margin: 0;
color: #555;
}

.staticreplybox
{
width: 100%;
left: 0;
position: fixed;
bottom: 0;
border-top: solid 1px #000;
height: 100px;
background: #f0f0f5;
padding: 0;
opacity: 0.92;
-ms-filter:"progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Alpha(Opacity=92)";
filter: alpha(opacity=92);               <------------------------------- This is just an incompatibility thing in Firefox. Nothing to do unless you want to do conditional CSS, which I don't generally recommend. But I thought I would point it out. :P
}

Now, considering that Google's search page contains (easily) more than 5 times this number of errors in their CSS, four CSS errors is laudable. :) I just thought you deserved to know.

Post by: Freddy on May 13, 2011, 02:20:37 pm
Cool, not too bad at all.  Bloc, the theme maker did a good job then :)

I'll adjust those in a minute.

Were you using the Firefox 'HTML Tidy' plugin to spot those ?  I like to run sites through that myself when I get a chance, very nifty little tool.

I think I will leave the filter one as it is for now.

Many thanks  O0

Nope. I do things like that "the hard way", and just use the error console. It's amazing how useful it is for finding crap like that. :P

Oh righto - well if you want something easier here's what I use :

http://users.skynet.be/mgueury/mozilla/ (http://users.skynet.be/mgueury/mozilla/)

When installed there's a little icon down the bottom right of firefox that tells you if the page parsed okay.

I've fixed those css errors now, thanks  O0

I try to avoid the big head  ;D  There's always something to do or that needs improving.

Glad you like the forum in it's new form  :)

I'm thinking of updating the Chatterbot Collection too.  It's been around 3 years since I did it last.  At the moment I am toying with linking the books and movies up to Amazon, so it's possible to see a description of the item and purchase options.  You can pick up a lot of reasonably priced things on Amazon.  It would also allow me to show reviews too.  The Amazon API is quite good I am finding despite a few odd decisions on the way they present data.  We'll see...

You mentioned linking the books and movies to Amazon before Freddy, if I remember correctly you were going to get it done by the end of the week  ;D

I still think it’s a good idea.

Over all the site seems to have everything needed, maybe I would like to see the share tool back, at the moment we can only send topics to Facebook, but that’s no biggie.

Haha  ;D

Well I would like to get it done by the end of the week, but it's doubtful as I went down a javascript blind alley.  You know in the chatterbot collection we have something like 700 movies....well previously I provided links to order them by title and also by year of release.  So far so good, but I thought to myself, why send the data more than once...why don't I just send the data one time and have the user's browser do the sorting.  Sounds doable ?  Well it is doable except it was too much for poor old Firefox.  Sorting an array of 700 titles melted it lol - over 20 seconds to respond. Even Chrome had a little whimper but staggered in a bit quicker.  CPU usage went up drastically in the process.

I never knew javascript was so burdened.  It should be easy to sort an array out in a split second on 4 cores.  Sadly not the case.  It looks like javascript is only good for simple stuff.

So before I bore you any more I'm going to do it all on the server and just deliver the pre sorted data (I know Dave will say 'I told you that a while back')...but now I know  ;D

Yes I think we need the share button back, thanks for reminding me.

Nice looking upgrade you got going here. Clean with a touch of class.

Freddy, I seem to be having a little problem with the built in image viewer, I’ve noticed it on a couple of embedded images into posts.

When I click the image and it pops out the page and enlarges it, there is no option to close the image, I’m having to navigate away from the page to close it.

What am I missing?

Have attached an image, you can’t see a close option.

PS I also cant close the attached image.

Did you try clicking on the image a second time, DH?

OOPS? Freddy beat me to the punch. :)
