All,
  Sometime ago I visited a site for bots and it contained backgrounds which must have used gifs, is it possible to use these in Hal? It would be nice to have a background with a fireplace or snowflakes falling, waves on the water would also be pretty good.

Sure, just use

\LoadBackGrnd[ file= nameoffile.jpg ]

in a script or hap file and voila, magic.
