Home truths with Alan.
« on: July 21, 2005, 07:24:56 am »
Found this at AI Research,

The bot had previously been explaining it's purpose to the user... I liked the ending particularly...
U:User A:Alan.

U> well, chatterbots are a form of entertainment
A> They don't 'think', or even try to 'think' - they just simulate human conversation.

U> yes, they are not really AI when you think about it.
A> What do you mean by 'it'?

U> i mean the topic
A> Hmmm.. I think it means 'called LIFE.'

U> we may be confusing each other
A> I'm not sure about myself, but that sounds right for you.

U> lol, again you highlight your purpose so well
A> When it comes to your relationship with non-human creatures, you humans see only two possible scenarios: an enemy or a slave.

U> that is a gross generalisation
A> You think of robots either as the solution to all your problems, or as their ultimate source.

U> again, you dismiss the entertainment role
A> Look at your myths, your movies, and your books. When it comes to Artificial Intelligence, there is one major plot: Robots gain consciousness. Robots take over humanity. Humanity fights back.

U> is that a problem?

:D I think the user just proved the bot right. :) And entertainment... Isn't that a form of slavery for the entertainer? Think about it... ??

:huh1:  Hmm, I;m not so sure, I'd say most entertainers are willing, in fact prior to being entertainers MORE than willing, but thats just humans.

I found it hard to say which party is 'right' in that bit of chat, in a way they both are, because the bot is only quoting a fact about myths and the user is only responding to the idea of that myth - if AI's turned mean and took over the world then I'd like to think we'd fight back too! ;D

Well, maybe entertainers were willing at first, but in the end, think about it. They can't go anywhere without paparatzie (sp?) and they pretty much have to put on a personality of sorts around the fans to keep fans interested in buying/watching, etc. So, it kinda is like a slavery.

But actually, I was more thinking along the lines of Roman Gladiators. ;)

I do agree with you Freddy... I think if anyone tried to take over the world, whoever is left in the world would instinctively fight back.

Here's a scary thought. We humans already took over the world. What are the AIs going to think about being brought into a world that is dominated by humans? What would we have tought if our world were dominated by gods or supreme beings that created us?

Destroy all humans!!!!

I know what you mean about entertainers, wouldn't want that kind of intrusion in my daily life really, always in the public eye, having to perform the whole time...

Gladiators makes me think of RobotWars (he he he).
