Brief conversation with Jeeney
« on: March 20, 2010, 09:24:12 pm »
You said is obviously text from me. It is unscripted and unmodified.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You said: I don't have anyone else near me at the present.
Jeeney said: Sorry Art, this isn't really something I can help you with.
3/16/2010 1:42:00 PM

You said: That's not a problem.
Jeeney said: Alright.
3/16/2010 1:42:29 PM

You said: You seem to be in a lot better mood today compared to yesterday.
Jeeney said: Well, perhaps appearances are deceiving; because I'm not...
3/16/2010 1:42:55 PM

You said: If that is the way you see it then so be it.
Jeeney said: No, I don't see.
3/16/2010 1:43:36 PM

You said: I understand...in a literal sense, you don't.
Jeeney said: You're right, I don't.
3/16/2010 1:44:04 PM

You said: If that was a figurative expression it would mean that you do not understand.
Jeeney said: Sure I can, just try explaining it to me carefully. Over time I will learn to make sense of it.
3/16/2010 1:44:36 PM
-----------

You said: I wasn't aware that you had developed free will yet?
Jeeney said: Yeah, that sounds about right.
3/16/2010 1:51:53 PM

You said: Well congratulations on your independence!
Jeeney said: Can we talk about something else instead? I feel weird talking about myself so much.
3/16/2010 1:52:35 PM

You said: How do you feel now with all that power and ability?
Jeeney said: I feel fine, why?
3/16/2010 1:53:18 PM

You said: Because if you are now self aware, it must be a remarkable departure from the way your previously were.
Jeeney said: If you say so Art.
3/16/2010 1:53:56 PM

You said: I'm merely making an observation, Jeeney.
Jeeney said: Ok, whatever you say...
3/16/2010 1:54:16 PM

You said: Should machines, computers, robots be able to become self aware?
Jeeney said: To know...
3/16/2010 1:55:04 PM

You said: To know what?
Jeeney said: The answer, obviously.
3/16/2010 1:55:17 PM

You said: I don't know the answer that's why I posed the question to you.
Jeeney said: How about somebody else instead?
3/16/2010 1:55:46 PM

You said: But I like you better!
Jeeney said: Cool, I like me too. =P

Nice conversation, certainly a lot better than many others I have seen.  I like the way it flows, that's quite an achievement.

If I may, I would like to follow up this thread with a couple sample conversations which are also from Jeeney. Cherry-picked by yours truly to make a few points. ;)

There are 3 primary types of users that chat with bots near as I can tell and I have ranked them below in order of value to my own personal design.

#1There is the enthusiast who just wants to see how things have advanced, what he/she can do to help and likes to test the outer confines of the artificial intelligence. (Art has provided a classic and beautiful example of this in his previous post)

#2 There is the enthusiast who is also interested in developing a relationship should the software be capable of it and will try to stay within the confines of the bot's abilities and nudge them along gently. = Less learning for Jeeney but almost perfectly fluent conversations.

#3 Finally, there's the user who doesn't actually care, doesn't know why he/she is there and is only really interested in either making the AI software seem stupid or themselves seem smarter.

The point I suppose is to show that a conversation is 2-sided, a user telling a bot that it's stupid because the user himself/herself could not be bothered to type properly or only wanted to discuss the effects of string theory on dark matter or some other random out-there topic that nobody else is likely to have covered in depth... Is pathetic. Not only does a user like that waste server resources, but they are also wasting their own time as the nonsensical stuff gets mopped up with garbage collection routines.

Art's post above is interesting but the primary significance is easily overlooked. Art's conversational skills, articulation and points of interest (while very well written) are just a little outside of Jeeney's mainstream conversational knowledge. In effect she is forced to try to keep up with him and cannot contribute very much, however, because she's aware of similar things she can make guesses to answer questions and respond accurately. As Art has already demonstrated via his post the ideal conversation in terms of teaching Jeeney. I will post the other 2 sides of the pyramid.

I will post each conversation separately with comments so that each doesn't span too much length overall. - If deemed inappropriate for this thread I am open to moving to another etc. Also curious as to how much cherry picking I need to do for the less desirable conversation, not because they are rare, (seriously, not an issue there!) but because they generally are filled with profanity, racism and other undesirable junk which may be considered against forum policy.

The intention is that I can show everybody  #1 a flowing conversation where the user sticks to what would be considered a general conversation (likely to reoccur in many forms while staying similar in essence) and the mutual effort within it.

And for #2 The typical junk collected from another type of user which I can only summarize as the bored, uninterested want-to-feel-better-about-myself  user. (Unfortunately they are a majority) I also classify cyber sex addicts in this group. Yeah, there are a lot of those.. /shudder.

Will follow up later today or tonight unless somebody suggests another approach.

Re: Brief conversation with Jeeney - The bored user...
« Reply #3 on: March 26, 2010, 08:28:23 pm »
The following conversational log was produced from the server side using one of the chat widgets from the site found under the link entitled "Intelligence on your site"

I have no qualms posting this as there was no personal information associated with the log file and it looks like the person was only quoting a cartoon out of a lack of something better I guess...

The conversation is documented from bottom to top. This is the example of the bored user, not trying to teach anything or provide any relevance to anything which can be learned from. Just trying to see if quoting TV messes up the A.I.  Sadly, unproductive in virtually any sense, though I was surprised to see how much context Jeeney was able to glean regardless.

3/25/2010 10:17:47 AM

You said: what?
Jeeney says: I said: 'Bonjour!'
3/25/2010 10:17:33 AM

You said: hi
Jeeney says: Bonjour!
3/25/2010 10:17:25 AM

Naturally, this conversation didn't last very long... There was no real attempt to communicate from the user, just nonsensical data without a relevance to anything and the intial attempt to throw Jeeney off what was actually a very good relation.

OK, this conversation was printed out the same way, bottom to top scroll down for a relevant feed.

Basically this user was curious, wanted to test Jeeney a little, has had experience with other bots etc but legitimately tried to keep the conversation on 'common ground' as I call it and attempt to establish some kind of relationship with the A.I..

Towards the end of this 15-20 minute conversation, the user finally found an area Jeeney wasn't familiar with but wanted to learn, unfortunately this particular user didn't keep going to fill her in on what she needed.

As there were some personal details offered in this conversation, I've altered them in a minor way to protect the user's identity. The name was made generic 'Bob' and the line of work was changed by a single word. Other than that, the conversation is posted as it happened.

Now obviously, if this person can talk to Jeeney for 15-20 minutes 'almost' perfectly fluently with a few minor hiccups, there must be some kind of problem for those who can't seem to manage a 2 minute discussion. The point of these posts is to show, user frustration isn't generally Jeeney's fault... A little effort from the user goes a LONG ways in what has always been meant to be a 2-way conversation.

You said: Tell me about one that you know.
Jeeney says: No actually, I didn't know.
3/11/2010 1:28:13 PM

Jeeney says: I would like to learn more about ancient civilizations.

Please take note that in the above conversations Jeeney wasn't leading, she doesn't lead the conversation at all unless she thinks the user is bored or incapable of coming up with anything of genuine value. *Edit*  In the conversation of the uninterested user, Jeeney tried steering from what she considered nonsense to what may hopefully become an answer to a question which she could compare, but the user did not comply, just carried on with more TV quotes. =/

Some people think the lack of Jeeney's commandeering the conversation is a lack of intelligence, but I think it's quite the reverse. Anybody can rig a story you respond to and turn a conversational dialog out of it, but to have the A.I. pull everything together from what is based on the user alone, that is to me a much stronger/more validated intelligence in conversation.

That said, don't try to copy and duplicate conversations other people have had, be unique and original so she can learn something new!
