Towel Day is an annual celebration on the 25th of May, as a tribute to the late author Douglas Adams (1952-2001). On that day, fans around the universe proudly carry a towel in his honour.

Don't know for sure but given the fact that he was a staunch atheist, I can't help wonder if he would have been really annoyed!?
A memorial service was held on 17 September 2001 at St. Martin-in-the-Fields church, Trafalgar Square, London.
Oddly, I was around when it was introduced but for reasons unknown, never took to reading the Hitchhiker's Guide....
Much too busy with work, raising family, obligations, etc., at that time, I suppose.

Given his sense of humour I think he would see the funny side of it.
Being an atheist doesn't mean you cannot remember and celebrate a persons life with fondness.
