News Feeds ?
« on: May 06, 2011, 09:13:27 am »
Did anyone use the news feeds on the old site ?  Were they useful ?

I'm toying with an idea to aggregate the feeds into just one feed on the home page which I am working on.

How does that sound ?

Now you got me thinking, what is he going to do with these feeds  ???

Yes, gets my vote, I do browse over the feeds, sadly nearly every day.

Personally, I have no use for them, but I'm only one guy, and you're not tailoring the place to suit just me. :) If it adds to the general appeal of the site, I'm all for it.

Well I have just been working on some code that pulls stories from six sites of interest (the ones we were using before).  So then I am ordering them all by publication date and picking the newest thirty stories.

I think it will be enough just to juts show that on the home page and update it every 6 hours or so.

While I would not miss them, I did browse over them whenever I logged in....

Up to you my good friend....

Well they wouldn't be gone, just trimmed down to size and more digestible - that's the theory anyway  ;)

I kept all the feeds in the end, I just grab the thirty most recent stories and display them.  You should now see them on the new 'home' page.

I would prefer if they were more robot/chatbot/artificicial intelligence based rather than "new fossil discovered" or "crab nebula gives out rays" but there's some interesting ones in there.

Hmm, yeah I think those kind of stories come from the BBC Science & Environment, which I think used to be Science and Technology.  Maybe they shifted the emphasis as they already have a technology section.

I'll try and find some AI feeds and maybe drop the S & E one.

This might help...

If you google “robotic rss feeds” or variations with "rss feed" on the end there seems to be a lot to choose from.

Been there done that  ;D

Have some new ones.

I'll update it in a little while.  I think dropping the BBC feeds will help as they seem mostly unrelated.  I've found two new AI specific ones.

If anyone finds others they are welcome to drop them in here.

These are the two I am working on at the moment :

Actually the Kurzweil site doesn't seem to stick to AI like you would expect.  Would anyone miss that ?

And MIT too seems too general.  I think we need to start afresh.

Ok I ditched MIT too.  Even AAAI don't seem to stick to AI which is annoying.

Anyway, I think it is a lot better and more relevant now.  Currently there are five sources, more can be added in future if anyone discovers a good feed.  :)

Plenty of stuff about robots.

Oh and I dropped Kurzweil because they go off on some wild unrelated tangents.  What's the matter with all these AI sites ?  :tickedoff:
