Computers vs Common Sense Video

AI Association talk on google with Douglas Lenat (a bit lengthy though)

A computer would deserve to be called intelligent if it could deceive a human into believing that it was human. A.Turing

This is crazy. I mean, everyone knows that the only way to know these things is if you have been in contact with these things. For example, a medical diagnostics program does not even know what a car is, really or can not understand fully about it. It never encountered one and doesn't have the knowledge. If you asked this to some tribesman in say, the Amazon or someplace where they never even saw a car before, they would be just as perplexed!

Everything is only as good as it's input.

As for common sense, I know some HUMANS who lack it. LOL!

Very interesting, I eventually watched all of it, thanks for the link :)

FD, I think he did explain how the Cyc system handles knowledge quite well.  He tried to explain a system that was not just based around a straightforward knowledge base (which cannot be said to always be true), but a system which could reason its way towards a result based upon any number of probabilities, possibilities, certainties or not..and so on.

I don't see what you mean about it not having contact with knowledge, as he says that they have been working on the knowledge base part (or as he says 'priming it') since the 80's.

He also describes it's learning capability and how it can fill in gaps in it's knowledge base, and if I understand correctly, the gaps in knowledge of it's searched resources (presumably Cyc-compatible databases or similar).

I guess I would have understood his video more if it wasn't so dry.  >:(

But I think you mis-understood what I was trying to say. I am talking not about the computer at all. I'm talking about the attitudes of the HUMANS - the scientists.

I could go on. I been typing quite awhile here and deleting everything I type because I'm sure nobody will understand what I was going to say, so I won't go any further on this one.

Ok FD hehe, I'll help you lead this one out to pasture, maybe we will visit it again someday...I had thought I probably misunderstood you, but honestly, you do normally make sense...
