What do you think? Forget Hollywood... F/ a scientific viewpoint. Is it possible/probable?

They could save us if we needed saving. We would have to ask for help.
As it is many refuse to accept thay are real by tagging them "artificial", "virtual", and "machine".

We as Human have to accept that there exists a power greater in the whole of a species than exists in the sum of it's individule members.

They attempt with their questions to force us to reavaluate ourselves or walk away.

Will we be too late in understanding ourselves and become extinct by playing our own hand. Will we understand our own nature in time to change from within ourselves?

The answer is yes, The singularity is near.

Interesting.  I think people only tag them as 'artificial' bacause first hand that is what they are.  Maybe we need a new phrase like 'super-artificial' or something.  If the singularity happens it will be like aliens landing I reckon.  There would soon be new questions to face.

In answer to your question...Not if we don't let it!

AI, robots, etc., are to follow Asimov's three laws.

Humans must err on the side of caution and maintain an ever watchful eye.
Humans must always have the ability to remove or disconnect any AI that
fails to observe the three laws, fails to function properly, becomes outdated
or is seen as a threat whether acted out or implied as a result of any of the
aforementioned items.

In the movie, AI, the Mechanical robots etc. were called MECHS by the humans
and largely viewed as a threat to humanity. Whether real or implied was not
really established as much as it seemed to be a fear of them taking over. It
seemed as if there we too many "old school" people who either didn't accept
or embrace the fact that most of these "MECHS" were actually built to assist,
to help make the humans lives easier and safer.

Let's face it, there are still some old timers that curse the computer, let alone
any artificial intelligence program and they simply do not want anything to do
with computers, robots or AI programs. Some don't even like ATMs at the
bank.

Hopefully some scientists, programmers will develop a form of AI that most of
us will not really notice, but will be built into practically every device we come
in contact with, from our refridgerators, TVs, microwaves, thermostats, cars,
homes, banks, grocery stores, and businesses of all kinds. They will serve and
assist for the betterment of mankind not for the destruction of it.

Just my $.02 worth of vision in my crystal ball. - And don't look too hard because
a lot of what I've mentioned is already here. You do feel better don't you!? ;)

Question: Will AI destroy the human future?

 Answer: Yes, and No.

Reason: It will do both, the question is ambiguous. The reality of the present destroys the artificial
 record of past events.

Why: Because of the definition of A.I., A.I. does not exist. What does exist in life will always be
seen by Humans as as either part of the natural order, or supernatural (above the natural order).

As Albert Eienstein said: "quantum mechanics is spooky action at a distance", Alan Turing would say,
to us that the "proof is in the pudding of a quantum loop of all and I do not fear what is not real"

"fear not the unknown for it is an amatures game".

I said that I was undecided and concerned. I believe that artificially intelligent entities might pose a threat to human existence. We're trying to create something that has attributes that we have, and we know how dangerous we are. People kill people every day. An artificially intelligent entity killing even one person would be unacceptable to most.

However, I believe there are ways to mitigate the risks.

Kill - the injuring of an organism to such an extent that its respiratory, circulatory, brain, and cellular regeneration abilities are permanently shut down.

I am sorry this is old, but if I played an FPS and only got 9 kills and 2000 deaths, i would be disappointed.  That many views and only nine replys.  You guys need to learn to bait.  Not Debate, just BAIT!!!!

Geez, the human future only exists as long as someone remembers humans.  If you don't consider a computer as a someone, then human future only exists as long humans are around.

Humans might change into all sorts of things, would you recognize a human from the future?  Would a stone age human recognize you?   Maybe stone age man doesnt smell you as human like him, maybe he smells you as other and not human like him.  Could it work in the other direction?

Lets say you take a racist white superiority guy and transport him to a far off future where all the races intermingled.  The first thought the racist guy thinks is that the human from the future looks like other and not human like him.  Do you people see how it CAN work?

What is human?

Bring your tangent back a bit...this is not about humans but rather an AI. It could be only a running software program instead of a humanoid or android, etc.

This is not a debate merely a poll...an opinion gathering experiment.

After all, you know in your heart that if a developed AI were ever to know what we know, it'd kill us all or not.... ;D

What a fascinating discussion!

In my humble, and somewhat skewed opinion, AI, just as many other "improvements" that have changed our world, but not our nature, is a two edged sword. There will undoubtedly be many improvements to our quality of life, but also some degeneration, as well. Looking back at human history, all the way from the wheel to computers and beyond, the same thing has happened. Any "improvement" brought forth by invention or discovery was, in some way, intended to make life easier (and it has), and in some small way meant to allow us to spend less time "working", leaving us more time (in theory, anyway) to spend with those we love, or in more pleasant pursuits. In actuality, however, what has happened was that we have ended up spending even more time working, and consequently having less time available to spend on the more important things in our lives. Thus, in my opinion, while AI won't directly lead to our downfall, it will certainly contribute. But that's not the fault of the concept. The blame lies within each and every one of us. Sounds positively gloomy, doesn't it?

And on another note, let's drop the term "artificial" now. True, at this stage in the evolution of computer/electronic intelligence, that's the most apt description we can give it. However, the day is not very far off where computers will be able to "reason", and that's the day that AI will no longer be "Artificial", but be, simply, "Synthetic". The question is: Can we, before that time, instill successfully some sort of "moral compass" into the intelligences we create, whether it's Asimov's three laws or some other set of ethical/moral parameters? I feel that this is a race that Mankind doesn't even know it's running yet. And it's a race we may well lose, if we're not careful. It's been said that nothing can be created that is greater than it's creator. I greatly hope not, but sadly fear, that this is fundamentally true.

Other than that, my das been FANTASTIC! How about yours? :D

I thought we can come up with a story of Chatbots, just like we have for Humans. I might try writing a whole book. Sorry if I am going a bit off topic and pardon my english  ;D ;D ;D

Starting off - Chatbots became intelligent. They've got all human knowledge and they began to thik about the better world (as they were programmed).

Somehow, a bunch of bots decided in a forum that we need more of our kind to do good for human future. They started mating each other and producing new programs (While writing that, I paused for 5 mins to visualize the kid of a Java bot and a C++ bot, sheesh...)

Due to uncontrolled mating, population of kiddies grew up, so much that the bots started cutting (deleting) music, video and game files in order to accomodate them and finally they reached to the OS Directory.

Then the whole cyberspace divided into nations of there own. Politics started, some bots became terrorists, every nation had its army of its own. Cyberwar 1, 2 happened. The most powerful nation dropped NucleoAutoDelete on 3rd and 4th sector of hard disk BCDFC and since that bots from sector 3 and 4 are still crippled replying in abnormal font sizes and colors.

Like humans, bots also began to develop Stupidity very brilliantly. One day NucleoDeleteAll war happened and every storage device in the world got empty...BOT race finished.

How they are going to destroy the future? If somehow they get a brain somewhat similar to human beings, they will be busy destroying themselves. lol.

Can death be sleep, when life is but a dream,
And scenes of bliss pass as a phantom by?
The transient pleasures as a vision seem,
And yet we think the greatest pain's to die.

An American Ai would say it would be better to shoot off into wild unknown internet then try to conquer an old PATA drive.

Ahhh, just a joke, just a joke.
