Chess of a soft...medieval style...or something like that.

Came across this while doing some chess research and had a laugh! I think there was an old animated chess game called Battle Chess but that was back many years ago. This is something along those lines...I think... Worth a laugh!!

Haha. I like the battle animations.  Especially when the queens go at it.

The algorithms for computer chess A.I. are worth reading about.

In Linux, there is Brutal Chess.  "Brutal" sounds similar to "Battle".

I wonder if this classic computer chess game was the inspiration?

In my opinion, the new version at the top of the thread... Seems

the pieces are too large in proportion to the chess board.

I don't know...

Did you watch the video play? The screen capture is not the same as when the pieces are playing a demo of the game.

I thought they looked OK considering the game is more for entertaining than it is actual chess play for which there are numerous game boards and engine for anyone serious about learning the game. There's some nice Open Source ones available as well.

I must say, the recent incarnation of Battle Chess is a far cry better than the older one (that Freddy showed)!!

The animations are a great idea in Battle Chess.  Yet, the pieces should limit their movements to the game rules of chess, which confines them to certain squares on the chess board.

In my opinion, there is a fundamental design flaw in this new version related to an important concept of chess.  Chess is a game of perfect information.  Both sides are given all the information.  Therefore, when pieces move onto squares in the animation that they are not supposed to, or entire groups of pieces vanish from the chess board to make way for other pieces to move, the information becomes imperfect.

Please remember, my critique is constructive and friendly intended.  Hopefully to inspire improvements in future  versions of Battle Chess.  So, please do read my critique as such.  I respect the opinions of others, which may be different than mine.

I think it's just a bit of fun and will maybe bring Chess to a wider audience. I do remember playing the old Atari ST version back in the day. Once you had seen all the animations it got a bit annoying waiting for them. So inevitably in the end if you wanted to play chess you just played a normal game.

Another thing I recall is that it is far worse being beaten by a computer than a fellow human player.
