Title: I LOVE SL. Sorry (but not ashamed).
Post by: GT40 on December 02, 2008, 01:23:18 pm

Hi everyone!

Yes, I love Second Life. And sorry if it's not politically correct to write that on AI/VR forums. Old looking game (really sure it's a game?), no AI in it (poor human brains only), entertainment for ordinary people (non-specialists of computers)... I know, I know.

And I also know I'm very late. Joined SL 6 or 7 months ago (when I finally got a "normal" computer, lol). SL started in 2003 and I guess most of you made the trip 2 or 3 years ago, or more. When reading old threads, seems that many forums members suddenly disappeared, maybe in the virtual Bermuda Triangle of SL, and never came back. ;D

I have had a lot of fun during several years, by playing and experimenting with Haptek characters, and with Pandorabots (never been a fan of UltraHal). It was a nice adventure and now it's time to turn the page.

Afraid I'm hooked to SL. At the beginning, I thought it might be interesting to play the little programmer with the Linden Scripting Language. Maybe later, for now I don't need that. Living my second, third, fourth lives, as an ordinary user, it's enough. And fascinating, more and more amazing. More and more addicted... until the next passion. Of course. Hopefully.

No recent post about SL here. Wondering if other stupids like me still exist on this forum... ::)

Nothing to be ashamed of anyway GT40, I have had some fun in SL but in the end I found it wasn't really for me.  There is some AI though because Vit Rossi from V-Humans forum had an AIML cat on there which I was talking to.  I found talking to real people was more interesting, so it's a lot like real life!

I know what you mean about it being 'entertainment for normal people', I guess that's why it has done so well.  Us graphics junkies are well out-numbered it seems!

And the Bermuda Triangle - yeah I had those same expereiences, people just disappeared and never came back.  The same kind of thing happens in the gaming world too, by which I mean MMORPGs.  Sad to see them go, but what can you do.

Anyways, enjoy yourself, I do hope you will return here sometimes unlike the others.  We do like to see you and maybe I will give SL another try some time, just not yet.

Lol GT, its very very popular so no need to be ashamed as Freddy said.

Some come, went, never came back yet others still pop in from time to time.

Consider us like a fancy hotel, exclusive for sure, an aquired taste maybe...but our doors are always open to people  past and present who feel like dropping in and saying hello :)

Hi Freddy and Mav. Thanks for your quick and kind answers. :)

Afraid I had broken something, lol: after sending my post, the most part of the forum (except the AI Dreams and Robotics sections) suddenly disappeared (with my post, of course). Now sometimes, the whole forum reappears (like now), then disappears again. Very strange. Edit: the problem exists when I'm logged out only.

It was not a goodbye. Always keeping an eye to stuffs from friends and ready to comment. And you're right, after my SL adventures, sure I'll come back in the Haptek world, one day or another. You know what? Sometimes I still play with Oddcast characters! I discovered them some years ago, before Haptek, and I always thought it's enough for a chatbot. Haptek allows sophisticated uses, but for moving mouth and eyes only, Oddcast is perfect and can be very realistic, even in 2D.

About SL, the technical part is interesting but I agree, the human one is the best. A way to experiment all kinds of phantasms, to virtually realize them. So after spending some months/years in SL, I guess people can't find something stronger (it's a drug, isn't it?) and, disappointed, go back to the old references (Haptek, Zabaware, Pandorabots, just speaking of what I know, lol). Not yet reached that point. :)

Don't know about that GT, now your into SL you can contribute here about your findings, PC settings etc etc. Sure many Sl users pass by us that might find this section interesting :)

Ha, theres a lot more AI in SL then you'd think ;)

Many companies make use of 'greeters' simple chat bots that record data about users...one or two use automated systems to detect potentionall harmful chat and throw them out.

There are also the SL-Transhumanists and the Cosmic Engineers, both of which focus on getting AI spread throughout the planet.

Just be careful GT40 as a lot of folks have become addicted to the point that they have lost their jobs, spouse, home and practically everything in the 'real world'.

Keep things in balance whenever possible. ;)

Thanks, Art. I understand what you mean and am sorry if some people (of the forum or not) might have had that painful experience.

I don't try to escape real life with SL. Because I can say, despite little troubles as everybody, I'm "happy" (I know I look stupid) in RL, with my family, and need nothing else. But a little bit more money is always welcome. ;D

That's why I have erected a wall between those two worlds. The time I spend in SL is a great source of pleasure, but logging off has never been a problem. Because I LOVE real life.

I'm always amazed and smiling when I meet people in SL, who are doing exactly the same things they're supposed to do in RL. Playing like little children. But of course SL is made for that. Because it's a GAME.

And I'm really disappointed when many other ones use SL like MSN, with cams, voices, photos and (true or not) personal infos in their profiles. All that is REAL life, and yes, all that is the best way to destroy it.

In my case, the "person" I am in SL is totally different from me and can't get over the wall, can't exist on the other side. No possible mistake, no mental confusion or schizophrenia. When the movie ends, I'm ME again.

And I love that. Too. :)

Very cool, GT40! It seems you do have a good handle on it and I'm proud of you for that!

All too often we read, see and hear horror stories of meeting someone else and falling in love
with someone in a SL situation chat room, etc., and forsakeing their family and spouses.

Some people have a problem seperating the real world from the fantasy ones. A real shame.

Life's too precious to throw away on some digital image.

There's no need to apologize for enjoying some diversion, heck I enjoy certain types of video games!
Of course, I have hesitated to turn it off except when called for dinner. Yea...she's a great cook! ;)

All the best to you!

Thanks again, Art. You're right: virtual cooking can't struggle against our spouses. :)

And yes, it's important to always keep in mind that SL is a wonderful role game. Only a game.

I recently met on SL a woman (but never sure, lol) living in England, who wanted to spend a weekend with me (as you know, I'm in France, but not so far away). I told her it was not a good idea... ;D

It was just as well...your spouse probably wouldn't have let you keep her anyway!!  ;D

All things in moderation is my take.

Just wondering ; have they said anything about upgrading the graphics in SL yet ?  It's about time they did - maybe it would slow things down too much though.

I have an overclocked GeForce4 4200TI 64MB from the Middle Ages, which runs fine with SL.

That's why I hope they don't plan to improve anything. :(

Suppose it depends on your outlook on it...for those more interested in the fun/social aspect its probably fine just as it is.

For people like myself, it just looks like something I used to play with on my old Win98 computer....

Now, as always, there will be those who are upset (but owning a PC in the first place imo is admitting that you will need to constantly upgrade as and when times dictate), but if they were to cross say Half Life 2 graphics into a social world like SL...then I may be very interested...

You're right, Mav. Of course, it's always more pleasant to have an up-to-date powerful computer with the good graphics card. But not very funny to always having in mind that all that is still obsolete, lol. :(

I noticed that the image quality is important and evident when I'm just the spectator of a game. But when I'm inside, I'm too busy for admiring the landscape. Driving a Ferrari in the Monaco Grand Prix, or trying to land a 747 on Kennedy Airport requires a lot of concentration. That's why I still have fun with my previous PC (Celeron400 & 3Dfx Voodoo3, lol). :)

Yes, I'd like to have a better image in SL. But if I change the graphics card, I've to change the power supply too. And in SL, because of my bad English and slow typing, my only problem is to quickly reply to several IMs at once. So the only thing I must update is myself... ;D

Wait until they make a game that uses 3D glasses - not the red/blue ones but the ones with dual screens - one for each eye. That would be cool.

Cool ideas, you both. Wait and see...

And then, sure that age-old question of money will reappear. ;D

I've had a pair of 3D glasses for many years that do not have red/green lenses but rather clear ones.
The lenses contain an electronic shutter that opens and closes in an alternating fashion and it's so
fast that the eyes don't distinguish the flicker.

Some of the demo games were racing, motorcross, skiing, etc. and one demo showed a rotating
image that actually looked as it was floating 4-5 feet in front of the monitor! It made one want to
reach out and try to touch it.

I still have them around here somewhere in their case. My friend and I each got a pair at a local
computer show.
 ;)

Oh yes Art, I remember having seen reports about that system, some years ago. I've found this:

http://www.razor3donline.com/converter.html

I guess it's the same kind of glasses but I've some serious doubts about the 3D quality, obtained from a 2D image. And I'm sure that your system was a real 3D one. :)

GT40,

Thanks...it was the X3D software and (I think) glasses. My friend and I were each made a deal for several CD's of software programs, games, etc., a wired and wireless pair of glasses for about $40 give or take as it was many years ago at a computer show.

Actually the quality was surprisingly good and especially so compared to those horrid red/green glasses. These actually worked as advertised (surprise...surprise) and gave us lots of laughs, fun and entertainment for several years. I have to see if I can locate them....

Yes Art, I guess that with specifically made CD's, the effect must be terrific!! 8)
