Title: Lords of Midnight
Post by: Freddy on March 21, 2015, 09:42:53 pm
I wonder if anyone remembers this. For me it's still one of my most favourite games and it's been lovingly reborn recently for various platforms including PC and Android. I'll get the PC version I think, it's only £4.00.

I spent many a happy hour playing this game and the AI is quite good in it considering the Speccy had 48K of memory and was an 8 bit machine. There was a 16K version but most people went for the 48K model, mainly because most games needed that much memory. Later models came too. I still have a couple of them in the cupboard.

So anyway, I guess I could describe this as a bit like chess in a way but on a larger board. It's turn based, so you make your moves with all the individual characters (there are dozens) and then once you have done that night falls and then the bad guys come out to play.

The game involves recruiting allies to fight against the evil witch king Doomdark, somewhat inspired by The Lord of the Rings. There's more than one way to win. One way is to beat the opposition in battle by taking key locations, citadels and keeps whilst the enemy forces slowly but inevitably make their way into the free people's lands. Only by taking the final enemy fortresses are you victorious. This can take a long time.

One of my favourite things to do is to recruit as many allies as I can, trying to get them all, but that is not always possible.

Anyway, I've rambled enough, here's a couple of videos. The first one is the original and the latter the remake. I like that they just tidied up the graphics rather than totally redesigning them.

Yeah that was the loading period of boredom - it was tape based loading and a typical game would take about 4-5 minutes to load  :stars:

You probably had to be there at the time  ;)

Yeah, the Radio Shack TRS-80 (Trash-80) initially came with a cassette tape with which to load the various program.

Sometimes the volume control wasn't set quite right for the machine and one would often get a cload error (cassette loading error), in which case one would rewind the tape adjust the volume and try again.

Modems then, if you were lucky enough to even have one, were 300 baud! Blazing fast!! Then came 1200, and 2400, 4800, 9600, etc. Gads! am I THAT old?! :-\

Yep it was the same with the Spectrum. A decent cassette recorder was a must.

In the US you also had this :

Which was based on the UK version, but with some enhancements.
