SL, graphics cards, books and other things...
« on: January 14, 2011, 07:25:39 pm »

While googling and surfing about SL and graphics cards, I found this:

http://www.squidoo.com/which-graphics-card-is-best-for-second-life

Nothing new for SL users, but many interesting and recent things. And in the bottom of the page, some good links to books (we can read the first pages) and informations about SL.

And if you have nothing else to do, you can explore the whole site.  :)

You know when you see something and you think that cant be right, well this is one of them times.

On that page it says:

Which Graphics Cards for Second Life?
Basically any graphics card a year or two old from either ATI or NVIDIA will run Second Life…

I don’t think that statement is correct, there are low end cards made today from ATI and Nvidia that simply aren’t up to the job of running SL, these cards are found in some midrange PC’s, yes midrange.

Low end PC’s tend to have onboard graphics and again aren’t really suitable for SL.

The types of cards I mean are 3D cards but have such a low throughput that really they are only any good for 2D applications or running windows aero.

Example of such a card.

Asus ATI Radeon 4350 HD 512MB PCI-Express HDMI Silent

PS I’m not having a go at you GT I just think the author has over simplified things, a better way to simplify it would be to say, Spend around £80 on a card and its going to run SL at a pretty good frame rate.

No problem Data, I agree. Computers for work are not computers for fun. I theory, the most expensive cards must to do the best, but I never saw specific benchmarks for SL, except the well-known frame rates graph. Gamers think SL is just a toy for old people ("old" means over 25, lol).

Every user has his/her own system and the only thing to do is to go in SL and see. I'm a bad (or very good?) example: I use a not too bad old PC with a very old card. A GeForce Ti4600, the cream of the cream in... 2002, the year before the birth of SL! Now this obsolete card is not listed in the minimum requirements for XP anymore, but is supposed to work with Mac's.

And the fact is my SL runs very well, of course with low graphics settings and the card is very well cooled, so the thing crashes very very rarely. And I noticed that people crashing in my place (many scripted objects inside), often use, in their bed, lol, an overheating laptop, sometimes recent. It doesn't make me happy at all, but...  ::)
