We can all only hope that rockershaft and Ricky never get
their bots "Julia" and "Virgiliscool" into a convo with each other.  :o  ::)

BTW.........I won't be on forum much for awhile. I've decided to explore all
the debauchery that's to be had in Second Life. Seems that two-thirds of the
business going on there has to do with sex. They even have virtual prostitutes.  :o

Just kidding, I'm watching vrossi as he sets up his new virtual office there and
trying to get his AIML based chat cat and cow programmed and working.  ;D

lol you off to second life, pale off to kaneva...whats the world coming too.

On a serious note, is life really that crappy that we have a need for these 'virtual lives' ? Have these worlds arrived based on our need for them or their need for us I wonder?

I will admit, without the internet, my life would be nothing, is that sad or just a case of what the modern world is/has become?

I can only speak for myself on that count Mav. For me, I have found that it momentarily, while there,
takes my mind off the pain I have endured on a daily basis for going on 10 years now and allows me
to do things in a virtual body which my own paralyzed body is not capable of anymore. It seems that
some of the activities being indulged in there are a little more prolific and out in the open, but then
again no one is being killed there either. It will never, I am sure, take the place of reality but it does
make for an interesting diversion.

Hmmm interesting point bro.

Can understand your perspective, and it makes a lot of sense.

But as for 'taking the place of reality', we can do things in the virtual world we would/could never do in real life, its another place so to speak. As as humanity only drags ityself further it the swamps, does it not make sense to almost want ti to take the place of reality. Its the same with games, if I was ever able to/given the choice etc, I would much rather live out my days in a game world than in the real world if that makes sense.

But as you say (with Second Life), no one is hurt, killed etc, so what is the harm. You either choose to consent to an activity or you dont. Its really as simple as that isnt it?

Real life is not always, unfortunatly, that black and white is it.

For me though, long may they continue providing the cost is proportionate to what you want to do. I took a look at Kaneva, while interesting and similar in concept to Second Life it all looked rather basic to me if you are not prepared to put your hand into your pocket to cough up for 'credits'.

Maybe this is something they can possibly look at in the future to make it a little more accessable to the masses?

Let us know how you get on though, never know, might come join you heh.

I don't think things like SL are a replacement to life, I tend to feel they are more supplementary.  I could find plenty to do in real life and never touch a computer again, but at this point in time I am finding new developments in computing to be very interesting so I choose to spend a lot of time on it.  Who knows, in a few years I may tire of it all.

I wasn't much impressed by SL, but I am thinking of going back to take another look as I now have a better graphics card.  My main problem with it was it was slow and jerky.  Also I was thinking of a virtual career in SL designing products and things.  Some people make enough to live on and more in SL.

On Kaneva...I thought the same as you Mav, it seemed empty and vacuous with little to interest me - maybe I should give it some more time though.  In time I guess that will change as more people populate it.

And would that be a virtual tax free career there Freddy hehe  ;)

But yes, amazing as it sounds, you are right. Makes you wonder, with all of our combined talents here, surely we can can do something?

Actually there's quite a bit you can do in SL which cost's nothing. The only exception's are if you want to
have a home there. If you don't mind being homeless and don't want to go shopping for virtual goods which
you really can't use anyway, then you don't have to have money. I'm happy doing nothing there except walking
around, watching what goes on and interacting with people without being asked a lot of annoying questions
about my disability or strange looks because I'm a 45 yr old man strapped into a motorized wheelchair.

vrossi has been exploring SL for almost a year now and has decided to set up a virtual extension of his consulting office there.
I may decide at some point to buy into that world and start up a little virtual gallery. I'm not sure right now how far I am
willing to or can afford to take it.

Hmm. maybe we should check it out and see what we can do.   I do like the idea of designing things for people to buy - finally maybe I could make some money out of my passtime.  I have no idea where to start with making stuff though.

If we all got together to work on this collectively then I am sure we could all benefit from it in some way.

They have tutorials available on how to design things for use and sale in SL. But you can also make
things for sale there that could be used by the real world. Avatar meshes and all sorts of items for
use in graphics programs.

Yes, as of this morning $5 US would buy you $1040 Linden dollars. They are linked to the currency
exchange, so the market value fluctuates just as with any other currency.

First off you have to register as a basic member and go through orientation, which for a couple of old gamer's
like yourselves shouldn't be too difficult. Hell, I manage and I only have the use of one hand.  ;)
