Hello it's me, the Tom Cruise of SL.
I must apologize about all the members of forums of real life, who tried this damn program (of course, not a game, better, a second life). Most of them never came back (I have the list).
If you never did that (can't believe it), maybe you could click here: http://secondlife.com (http://secondlife.com) it's free.
Oops sorry, too late, now you're addicted.
Of course, this topic is a no-reply thread.
Because you will never come back, hahahahahahahahaha!!! (reverberation) >:D
-
Since I iClone, I forgot a few second-life, but I still have my friends who do not understand why I'm gone. The reason is that I can not use two programs, iClone is a great place. That said, I love second-life, but I have to choose iClone or second-life. I hope to return soon. Because I have all the gifts is part of my friends hair, clothing and much more. It is certain that the elements of second-life, are loaded on the server. Unlike iClone, the elements are on the disk. But I noticed all the places to get gifts. Second-Life is great! Bon voyage in the 3D world Gt40. I will try to return to second-life, I miss it a lot. O0

Thank you Claude. Yes SL is a fascinating "real" second world. A fantastic field of experimentation for all sorts of phantasms. Even if RL influences SL (when I have a serious problem in RL, not easy to be in a good mood in SL, sometimes better to stay in RL), all is possible.
And so many things to invent for our own world, building, scripting, or... just living with wonderful people.
That's the difference between a virtual world and a stuff made on a computer. You make fantastic movies with iClone (after Haptek) and you know I like them a lot. In SL, we are in the movie, we ARE actors and directors. And the movie never stops and is always different.
Welcome back in SL soon, Claude!! (sorry if we will never meet, like lots of SL residents write in their profile: I separate SL from RL, blah blah blah, lol). :)
-
Yes Gt40. There There's a great feeling of immensity. Second-Life, is reached by the possibilities. The use and made for people, which begins in this area, then it's off to adventure. An adventure, which is expressed by the discovery. I had many friends. More specifically, each world is a business. There There's a discovery in each world. I discovered with my friend Mrs. Wolf, the ball of air, train, and boat. We are going in the Roman world 'beautiful'! Then the world of the tropics. And my other friend with the head of the space, we are going to make the site free. Have found it full of free clothes, objects, the hair Maximun car for an enthusiast! Second-life is still linked to me. But I have to download, now version 2012. It is a pleasure. :)
-
This is my virtual world...Middle Earth ;)
-
Very cool Freddy! You could learn to like that environment enough to never leave!! (at least I could)! O0
-
I agree, wonderful landscape, Freddy.
I guess the game is to find the computer hidden somewhere in the woods.
Hey! Don't tell me this photo is real!! Taken in SL?? ;)
-
Middle Earth. Isn't that where the hobbits live ?
What is the game ?
-
You're right Dusky.
I have something else to do tonite and don't wish to watch the trilogy again (my son has the DVD's).
Freddy? :)
-
Lord of the Rings Online.
-
Thanks for the info, Freddy.
But since I'm not a gamer, I go back to SL. Good night everyone. :)
-
Me, who loves the countryside and nature. Freddy, this photo is beautiful! I love the colors of second-life. :)

This thread got me interested in SL once again, I originally joined it in 2006 but got very annoyed by it’s crashing and the really bad lag, however I kept my account just in case it got any better in the future.
So I downloaded the latest SL viewer and logged in, only to find the horrific lag is still there :tickedoff:, actually I think it was even worse and totally un-playable, I gave it a couple of hours but it didn’t improve.
Maybe its because I’m looking for a good frame rate of around 50, which I’m used to in games but having to deal with a frame rate of around 3 to 5 fps is a joke, I couldn’t even walk, its walk stop. walk stop. walk stop….
Will try again next year.
-
DataHopa, yes. I had a lot of trouble in the beginning. We must adjust the setting. But the vagaries of the connection, and the situation of traffic, temporarily, this causes, the BOG. I think for all online applications. Programs in the same type. Should be download to a server, and install to a server utility personnel. Google pioneered the system 'Cloud-Server'. I think it would be possible to send the SL installation, to a server of this type of program. To have a stable utilistation. SL, and very resource intensive, it is sometimes worries. But the solutions is to know the capacity of his computer, compared to SL. The SL world, can be very load, objects. Therefore, finding a less loaded.
-
I speak English, like a cow with my translator. I hope you can understand me ;D :2funny:
-
I understand you Claude and I agree with you too :)
The problem with SL is their servers, they can’t out put enough data for everyone in the sims, so everyone ends up getting lag, and the more people that join the worse it is getting.
I’m pretty sure my computer is fast enough, I can still play the latest games in 1920 x 1080 at maximum settings with a good frame rate and my cable connection is also very quick too.
SL needs much quicker servers.
-
Data I'm so disappointed for you and that's not good for my sect, lol.
3 to 5 fps is the frame rate that some people can obtain with a netbook. I'm sure you have a great computer. I guess you loaded the last official SL viewer (version 3). Most people hate it and use a third-party viewer. But that can't explain the bad frame rate.
Claude is right, the most important are the graphics settings (I guess yours are max).
You know I have a 10 y.o. old computer:
Pentium IV, RAM 2 GO, Geforce Ti4600, Windows XP3, 1024x768.
SL viewer: ultimate version 1 (1.23.5)
Draw Distance: 64 m
Measures by the Statistic Bar:
walking on an empty land: 25 fps (like my real TV)
standing on an empty land: 32 fps
zooming on the ground (no interest): 57 fps
elsewhere: I always have the Lag Meter in a corner of the screen and try to keep the 3 spots green!
I have read tons of articles about "how to reduce the lag in SL", I guess I can't do much better with this computer, lol.
If you tp to very crowded places (like top clubs), nothing to do when you have 50 people and more on the sim. Just dance or... do what you want with your partner on poseballs. There, the lag isn't very annoying.
I remember a wedding with 50 people in the church, or a concert of ZZ Top (very realistic avatars) with maybe 100 people on the sim: the lag was just horrible!!
About graphics settings, the first thing to do is to reduce the draw distance. Why having a 512 m dd if we are in a room? In all my places (public and private) 64 m are enough. When I have to travel, I increase the draw distance. Of course there are many other parameters, but less important.
Please Data, don't leave!! ;D
-
I do actually like SL GT, I used to have 3 shops a few years back, but now I find it unbelievably frustrating, don’t worry though, I will not delete my account so really I am still a member.
Thanks for the tips, I didn’t know the one about the SL viewer: ultimate version 1 (1.23.5), might give that a go. O0
You probably wont be too surprised to know that I do know the other setting tweaks, on my PC the only one that makes any improvement is the draw distance, setting it to 64 meters, not a fault of my PC just a lack of bandwidth from the SL servers, apart from that I do have it all on Ultra settings, you are correct.
Just tried it today, 64 meters draw distance, went to a sandbox with about 15 people in, started to build and got an amazing 7 FPS.
See the bottom right hand side of the image attached for FPS.
Yes you can see two weapon HUDs running, the sandbox is a dangerous place for a Wizard like me :D.
-
DataHop is accurate. This is a problem of simultaneous concentration of Databank. The load is too large, will have one is load times. For my part, I managed, solved the problem by a friend who guides me live. So you have tested, the elimination of contours, such as objects, a very heavy load, and also contains a light burden, it must be set to function, behavior, and loading. Normally after that, everything is okay. Now, and as said, our friend Gt40. The new version, must have new correction for this problem. :)
-
Oops sorry to notice that the old viewer disappeared from the SL Wiki. It was still available last month. Not a good sign.
With Google, it's possible to download it from some independent sites, like this one:
http://www.sensic.nl/PrivateMedia/Second_Life_1-23-5-136262_Setup.exe (http://www.sensic.nl/PrivateMedia/Second_Life_1-23-5-136262_Setup.exe)
Hope they didn't add malwares inside.
(btw Data, now I know you) :)
-
(btw Data, now I know you) :)
Indeed you do know me now GT, if you see me on line in SL, which is possible, please feel free to IM me :)
-
Thank you Data. Maybe we will meet on this sandbox. Of course I will use my first avatar/name when I entered SL. Much less interesting than my alts. Because neutral, politically correct, not interesting at all, "normal", just like me in RL (but of course younger). ;)
-
Been speaking to some old timers In SL and they have all said that the viewer to use is an open source viewer called Phoenix, so I downloaded it and gave it a try and the improvement over the viewer that you get from Linden Labs (the default SL viewer) is huge.
Now getting better frame rate with Ultra settings and my draw distance is 224 meters.
What is it with Linden Labs :tickedoff:, they can’t make a good viewer for their own virtual world, it takes some clever hackers to show them how it’s done.
You can download Phoenix from here:
http://www.phoenixviewer.com/ (http://www.phoenixviewer.com/)
-
Thank you Data. I have tried Phoenix in the past, and before, Emerald. Emerald was the same viewer. I guess you know the story: when LL discovered a malware in the code, they banned Emerald (and it was forbidden to use it). Then the team who had made Emerald launched Phoenix (same but without the malware inside)!!!
Phoenix works fine on my old computer and offers more tools (useful or not) but I went back to the old official 1.23.5 for several reasons.
Of course because I NEVER crash with it. And just for me, THE reason:
I have made hundreds of movies, pics, slideshows, animated pics for my places. Sometimes someone tells me he/she is unable to watch my wonderful movies (white screen), lol. With a recent computer (even a Mac) and a recent viewer. Sure he/she missed something but not my fault! It seems several recent viewers can't play movies.:(
With Phoenix I can see the movies but sometimes I have an issue. Nothing like that with the old viewer. The movie starts very quickly and plays like in a dream.
That's why many residents still use this obsolete viewer.
BTW lots of people are unable to go in SL with recent computers made for work, with a graphics chip integrated on the motherboard. But hey, a boss doesn't buy computers to go in SL!! ;D
-
Totally agree with you DataHopa. I had instant download SL 2012. I took my registration in 2010. So far everything is okay. Then made an empty-file. Well, now, a white fleecy lag. So I can wait. And if everything back, I give you my username. it will be fun to chat live. :) O0
-
Oops Data and Claude (and others ??), I forgot to say that if you want to watch movies in SL, you must install QuickTime on your computer before. :-[
-
GT I didn’t know about the malware in the Emerald viewer, thanks for pointing that out, I did use it about a year ago.
Also read all your post and found it an interesting read, not surprised computers with onboard graphics can’t run SL, you are right the boss wouldn’t like it if they could ;)
QuickTime & Windows 7
I haven’t proved it in SL yet but Windows 7 can play .mov files so there shouldn’t be a need to install QT in Win 7 for SL.
I can say that my Win 7 can play the .mov files I have on my PC straight away after installation.
Maybe see my friends Claude and GT in SL sometime, which would be cool 8).
-
Data, no worries about the late malware anymore (a spyware looking for informations about residents?), lol. I must say everytime I use a third-party viewer, I wonder if I give my password to the guys who made the program or just to LL. But I know I'm a little paranoiac. ;D
QuickTime needed in SL under Windows 7 ? I don't know. Maybe you could find in "Search" LM's of shops selling SL TV's. And go there. You will see if their movies play in your SL.
I bought QT7 Pro after I started to make movies. QT often has hiccups (stop and go, lol) when running under my XP. I thought my computer was too old, or because itsn't a Mac. But it's funny to see that inside SL, the same movies always play perfectly. O0
-
After testing the viewer 3.2.5., Accidental disconnection, and large bore. So I make the download of SL viewer: an Ultimate version (1.23.5). Hopefully this will work. >:( :o ;)
-
There are still some minutes to download. Good. It is great to join us. I found an island with lots of bird, and very flowery. But there are plenty of things to see, I hope a good time to laugh with you. ;)
-
Just visited New London In SL, here is a snap I took on my day out.
-
I need your help. Good. I did the download, second life. But what intrigues me is the capacity of my computer, adhéquate with SL. I joined here, the capacity of my computer. I do not know how to set the parameters that best fits my Hewlett Packard. If it can better informed ideas. Thank you all. Either my computer is too low in capacity, or it must be in adhéquation with SL. Basically, I do not know how. And I'm afraid of being wrong.
-
Claude, have you tried the Phoenix viewer?, it runs much better than most other viewers.
http://www.phoenixviewer.com/ (http://www.phoenixviewer.com/)
I would give that a go my friend O0
-
Datahopa, I downloaded the viewer version Second_Life_1-23-5-136262, is this one? It is possible to make a transfer, shapes, clothing, etc. subject, the old account to the new account? Thank you explain to me my friend. ;)
-
No that isn’t the one I am using, get this one Claude, just click the link and it will download.
http://downloads.phoenixviewer.com/windows/Phoenix_Viewer-1.6.0.1600_RELEASE_SSE2.exe (http://downloads.phoenixviewer.com/windows/Phoenix_Viewer-1.6.0.1600_RELEASE_SSE2.exe)
You can have as many viewers as you like Claude, I have 2 on my computer, all you do is sign in with your username and password in any viewer and all your things will be there in SL for you.
-
Claude, your computer is very good to run SL (but we know nothing about the graphics card, the most important) and I agree with Data. I don't want to promote an obsolete viewer just because it's perfect for my prehistoric computer.
Cool SL session Data (I love Amsterdam since my first day in SL, too)!
Last night, something horrible happened in my SL. I was "in action". Suddenly the music stopped. Then the image became grey (gray?) and poof (like we say in SL)!! I was disconnected, not because of SL, the viewer or something else, but my internet connexion was broken (maintenance or real failure?).
This morning, my internet was back when I woke up. Sometimes it's not so bad to go to real bed before 3am. ;)
-
Oh! I understand better now. Yes, you're right Datahopa, Phoenix, is a different viewer. It is very powerful, from the description. I do not understand that second-life, does not speak the Phoenix because it is popular with users. Thank you my friend, Datahopa, I am trying, to download it. I'll be able to keep my old account. Thank you very much! (Phoenix version 1.6.0) O0 O0 ;)
-
Gt40, yes, yes. on my side I tried one last time the new version. But nothing works, so I took the version that I recommend our friend DataHopa. Finally, I hope, to discuss with you in SL. I had the version 2010, it works perfectly. But the 2012 version is horrible, it consumes huge memory resources, and bios, panics. This is scaring me. I think with Phoenix, it will be better. ;) O0
-
Yes GT, we don’t know what graphics card Claude is using, I was going to try asking but then thought it would be easier just to try the newer Phoenix viewer, if it doesn’t work in that then my guess is that it isn’t going to work at all.
But maybe you know better about getting SL to run on lower-end graphics cards than me GT :).
I’ve been away form SL for too long, and have fallen behind, I admit ;)
-
The download is still in progress. I think it will work.
Here are the details of the graphics card.
-
Intel Core2
-
Yes your computer should be able to play SL Claude O0
I am a little worried about your Internet connection speed, I download the Phoenix viewer in about 10 seconds.
You do need a good fast connection for SL really.
-
I often use this tool:
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/)
and choose the connection to San Francisco (where most SL computers are supposed to be located).
So I can increase the Maximum Bandwith (in Preferences) to 1000 kbps (and more) if the speed is good. My ADSL provider gives me a fantastic speed between midnight and midday (fortunately, when I'm in SL, lol). Not like that all the time...
-
DataHopa, yes. I'm not ADSL, because here the fast connection does not work. I have a WIFI satellite. It is also an advantage for external connection, This system is being tested for 5 years here. But I do like Gt40, said. Make a parameter to the platforms of San Francisco. This is probably an advantage, to avoid disruption of connection, from Europe to the world. I'll try this setting. O0
-
Claude, did you try my link? On the web, there are tons of sites testing the connection speed. I love this one because most of the sites we use are located in the USA. Nice to know how the connection works to the main cities (incredible difference between East and West coast, tested from Europe. Try it at different hours of the day.
American people are lucky: they don't need to cross oceans to go to SL.
American people are lucky: they don't pay a VAT to LL (19.6 % in France).
American people are lucky: SL is American...
Just an idea: maybe you could use a network connection between the PC and the modem (always better than wifi). I have a good friend in SL. He was always complaining about crashes, with a laptop (Sony Vaio) and wifi. Now he doesn't crash anymore: his motherboard burnt (I know, not funny). ;D
-
Thank you Gt40. Yes, I checked that, through the connection to other positions. I have an assistant, American, directly on the HP platform, and often, the same assistant, telling me, then it starts to get to know me, and it is very useful also to know the possibilities of its computer. HP Services, are very well managed, I preferred the original service of my computer, as were much better informed by technicians, and from California are very friendly. I will also follow your advice and see a connection, more appropriate. But I notice that Phoenix is lighter than the other viewer, it is simplest functions are all open, used is 100x better. Gt thank you my friend, for the board connection. I download Phoenix, and now, I clean out my inventory because it was overloaded, and too, I have all the gestures, clothing etc., has put in order, because since 2010, I am not able income SL. Maybe some elements are lost. But I could find more! ;) O0
-
DataHopa and Gt40, is my nickname. I have some trouble for my appearance. But normal, because for so long, I had to leave SL. So it is best to give it a place to join us. I remember the places, but it does not fail. So! Soon, this talk of SL. and also visited! O0
-
Well it looks like you have it running Claude, congratulations.
When I am in SL you can normally find me in “Little Blue SandBox†it’s a friendly place with nice people, and my name in SL is… “Wizard Yongboâ€.
Goes for you too GT. O0
I have quite a lot of work on right now but I will try to go in to SL when I can.
-
Oops I guess I can't refuse. I planned to give you my name in IM, the day we meet. My true SL (absolutely fabulous) begins after midnight (European Time), in the adult continent of SL (the only one interesting, lol). Of course as another resident.
I'm quite sure there is no risk to tell you (on a forum of RL) the name I choose when I discovered SL. No link in the profile (very ordinary) to my main avatar, but as I still said you, I'm paranoiac!
Let's go: my basic name is Maverick Kaul but hey, it's a secret!! ;D
-
Thank you very much Gt40 and DataHopa. I make my appearance, which is very hard to come, there is a lot to do refresh in my inventory. I am obliged to my new recorded appearance in an empty world. Then I could come visit you. Yes I keep secret, your nickname. I found the player! Of Phoenix, all functions are OKAY. Unlike SL, new version 2012. O0 ;)
-
Glad your SL works, Claude.
Phoenix runs fine because it is based on the (very improved) code of the old official viewer SL version 1 I have. That's why both have a similar interface.
Then the same team made Firestorm, using the code of the official SL version 2. I have friends testing it with some problems.
About the official SL version 3, I know what you think of it, lol.
It seems we have to change our computers everytime a new viewer appears. :(
-
Gt40, yes it's true, for the performance of Phoenix. My only worry is the rafraichisemment of my inventory. I want preserved, all I find in SL. I have over 2895 clothing, gesture of dance and another, I can say almost as much hardware in my iClone. That is strange is the similarity, avatars, iClone of, and SL. ;)
-
Refresh. After a long non-use, SL, inventory, this altered. It is therefore important to return several of SL, to change the world, very often, so, to refresh the inventory. Certainly it takes time, my AVATAR, begins to appear at the end of three days, but with great difficulty, I must repeat, a new, Shape, Skin, and also the basic clothing for re-launched, the appearance is essential.
-
I recommend to all my friends Aidreams of play with SL. It's very appropriate to do so, friends, to know also places real 3D, you have two options proposed by SL, is a real world, based precisely on a city, a historic place, and so on. Or imagined. As the consultation SL, can be almost compared, to Google Earth. Because SL is a huge globe, which teleports you everywhere, where you want. Two options are proposed. Moderate, Single, Adult. In the parameter, you must choose. Please note it is impossible to lying about his age with SL. Sl, does not retain, contact details, but for reasons of safety, Sl ask you, your code of passport or your national DENTITY card. After that SL becomes aware of your age. And defined, if you have the right to be admitted into the adult world or not. :)
-
Thanks for promoting our SL, Claude. I don't agree with you just about one thing: SL does't know anything about me. All is fake about my real informations.
Except my real credit card number.........
If we are totally addicted, we need to buy lands, to build new places, to create our own kingdom, for ourselves or to receive other residents (in public and private places). And to pay. With the money LL takes me every month for several years, I could had bought a terrific computer. But it's my choice.
Of course SL is totally free to visit and play and costs nothing. Residents with a Premium account pay for residents with a Basic account, lol.
About your inventory, don't worry too much, sometimes it can take several days to recover it. The good thing is that your account is always available. I remember someone told me LL could delete accounts, if sleeping for a while, but I don't know if it's true. ;)
-
Gt40, yes Sl does not delete the account and remain faithful to your return. But only in respect of the use, in the direction, places adult, SL, application, identity, your identity card. They simply ask the code of your card, and then they do not maintain the code. Once that permission is approved, a pink square, displayed in your parameter, authorization. it is a safety. You are right my inventory is very long. But I begin to find my appearance is very long, but insisted this back. ;)
-
This is the first result of my long refresh. But it's just a start. I can walk automatically by AO, I hold many items, but happens very gradually. Yes! it just! Oufff! ;D :tickedoff:Long refresh :-\ ;)
-
Here is the place where I am currently links "Oritz" O0
-
Ok Claude, like real people say on forums of real life, thanks for sharing, lol.
I'm afraid I can't post any pic or link. My main character, me and our "alts" never leave the adult continent.
In SL, I never miss an occasion to promote my places, but I'm sure Freddy hates porn spams on this forum. ;D
-
THE TIP OF THE DAY
Everybody knows that, if someone send you an IM when you're outside SL, the IM is saved and you can read it when you're back in SL. Ok.
Everybody knows that SL can send you this IM to your mailbox. It's an option in "Preferences". Ok.
But a few people know that you can REPLY to this IM from your mailbox. SL makes the conversion and sends an IM to the author of the original IM. It works very well.
Two conditions: the answer is not too long (less than 1024 characters) and not too late (within 5 days).
So you can "chat" (of course slowly) between RL and SL.
-
Great post GT40. Thanks for sharing. 8)
-
Yeah a good post GT, I agree, but over all I like the name of the topic the best.
Nice spam… and you, no, we got away with it. ;D
The side effect is that I have visited SL again, still not sure if that was a good idea or not :( :)
-
Sometimes SL, I teleport, or he wants, and I find myself in situations annoying. It is mostly mostly dialogue, which are sometimes very raw, lol. But I am interested in finding clothing and dance! But it is often full of people lol. :)
-
DataHopa I stand tonight, in your place. But I hope that my appearance will also be present. ;)
-
Data, no problem if you don't become addicted. RL can be nice too.
Claude, yes, shops giving freebies are always crowded. Good luck! :)
-
Ah 10 days after my first post, 2 people are back to SL. I'm happy. That's a VERY good result!!
I was right, people definitely lost in SL have no reason to read posts on forums of RL anymore. And they write on SL forums.
A second life is something so secret that there is no place for exibitionism.
I mean in RL... ::)
-
GT40, not sure it's a good idea to look for new residents: lag will increase. :(
-
I agree, the lag is horrible in the clubs where I dance. >:(
-
GT40, yes it's true. SL, offer, free of charge. Everything is okay, my appearance, finally, more precise. Slowness in the world to load an object, often when it's too many objects. Otherwise, everything going very well. I do a little dance with wolves and bears yesterday. I've been to London. Finally a lot of traveling to do lol. I like also travel true! ;)
-
Yes Claude, in SL all is free... for members with a basic account (the majority) because members with a premium account and lands (like me) pay and SL can survive (thank you GT40, lol). :)
I'm very happy to pay because I have built my own SL for me and for some other residents.
I'm happy to notice that the price in dollars paid by American residents didn't change for several years (ok, cool).
BUT
I'm VERY unhappy because the price in euros paid by European residents is increasing every month (several reasons, too long to explain).
I know. Any addiction is expensive... ;D
-
Gt40, yes, and many friends who have given me many exchanges. :)
DataHopa, I'm really sorry about last night on SL. I had big problems, and yet, I checked everything. But it is still necessary time for this to work again. Also, yesterday was not launched my translator SL. And IM, got stuck. I have no luck. :'( ;)
-
It's ok Claude, we said hello to each other :), at least I now know you are real, I think ;)
-
I think that secondlife does not like me. But my best partner is iClone, he loves me, and I love it too. But I stubborn, I was educated, secondlife. ;D
-
Good. Now I understand the problem. Here is the report. The lag meter. It indid, a connection is too low, and an error due to an application :-\
-
I find that list. But y 'so many! :o

I redo the instant trial. The result is very bad. I think it's impossible for me to use SL. Bandwidth is heavier. :-[

Sorry Claude if your internet connection isn't very good. I have a friend with a satellite connection like yours. He can use internet for work but not for games online. He's very happy that ADSL will arrive in his village very soon.
Maybe you could reduce the Maximum Bandwith (in Preferences) to 300 kbps (and less). It doesn't improve the connection but, at least, you will avoid to lose too many packets.
"Active Worlds", I remember, I went there with my old computer under W98. I recently checked it but it's becoming a desert.
Ah SL... ;)
-
Yes agree with GT, It doesn’t look like your connection is good enough for SL Claude, you really need something like a speed of around 10Mb to be able to move around in the virtual world.
On another note:
I have had a report sent in to LL about my behaviour in SL, I was on a sand box testing some of my particle and lighting spells and some people took offence to it and accused my of griefing them, at least 4 reports were submitted, now I am waiting for the ban normally takes 4 to 5 days.
What has happened to Second Life, all the fun is gone and some of the people in there take it way too seriously, I mean it’s only a game at the end of the day but if someone or a group of friends doesn’t like you they can gang up on you send in 5 reports and your banned.
NO more of my money going to LL, thats for sure.
-
No such problems in Middle Earth, we cast spells all the time ;D ;)
-
Its not like that in SL Freddy, you have to ask permission of the people around you if you want to use spells on them, and where is the fun in that? Heaven forbid you forget someone and upset them, you will get reported.
Some people just do take it way too seriously.
-
Gt40, yes it is certainly a concern, the parameter. But if I reduced capacity, the original setting. Sl, said that the conduct will be faster, but the subject will become blurred.
DataHopa, yes, I understand, some places are not cool. I have experience on a world, reserved, a political network, but I could not know, exactly. Moscow avoided the world. SL 2010, worked perfectly on my Vista. But I think that SL, increased bandwidth, since 2010.
-
Oh guys, I'm so disappointed you're disappointed. Nothing like that in the adult part of SL. And I can affirm that my sim is a paradise for my friends and all the residents (and more if affinity...) who visit. :P
Claude, after being sure you don't lose packets anymore, I think you must clear the cache. Because of the lost packets, the cache (and then the RAM) is full of corrupted elements.
-
GT40, I think iClone, pulled me by the feet. ;D He must be jealous. >:( Yes my friend, I'll do another test. :)
-
No worries Claude, there are thousands things to do with a computer. Better to choose the one we prefer and not to be annoyed by technical contraints.
For me, SL isn't a game but an extension of RL, a real second life (I can notice I'm not the only one). Ok I'm addicted but I don't smoke, don't drink, give only 2 euros/week to Lotto (Loto in France, lol), SL is my only drug. So I'm happy to give my money to LL every month.
I see that iClone is your addiction and it's a very good addiction. ;)
-
A friend of mine says SL is a great idea, the only thing that spoils it is the people.
I said, but that’s the point isn’t it?
Yes, he said, that’s the problem. :2funny:
-
Present company excluded from the above comment, of course :)
-
Lol Data, I understand what you mean. :)
As I still wrote, "MY" SL is a true paradise with only smart residents. Except one person, banned and ejected from my main place, for a very specific reason.
After carefully reading his profile, I notice he's French, like me. A shame!! ;D
(no problem, France doesn't exist in SL)
-
Gt40, the good news. I redid the entire parameter, reducing all the office, I reduced everything. The result is amazing! No discomfort to the processor and speed, more sensitive. I must absolutely keep this setting. I am an arm of a force SL.
O0
DataHopa, I was also sent by a kick yesterday. But Phoenix, have a parameter against the 'shoot'. So I am a direct report abuse. :knuppel2:
It must do so respected. >:D ;D
-
Ah yes, very good news, Claude. Glad you didn't leave SL! O0
-
GT40 is a game of Solitaire. But for all programs, the setting is very delicate. But it takes time. It took me one week to understand SL. SecondLife is preset to the broad bands. But it can also operate in moderate. But that SecondLife, does not say in the recommendation. Always put his hands dirty in for a real result. ;)
-
Last night, a user who had forgotten to remove the mushrooms. And it was in Rock Island. :2funny:
-
Here is the result. After a long period of adjustment. I eliminated the roots of some objects, and a lot of overhead in inventory. So I removed, which is not helpful. The improvement is continuing. This is a good sign.
-
Ex
-
Yes, always good to have a "lightened" inventory. Easy to say... ;)
-
Now I rarely leave the adult continent but last night, I visited Paris again.
I was very surprised to see that Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe are so close. ;D
-
Gt40 was moderate in Mature. But he did not stay long in the state, as the senior resident has cast a shout against him, he is a party in the waves, I think. It y'avait 1980 rock music, as I like, and can dance. I have an AO, which practice, 16 categories of dance, disco and main. I was free, this address by SL is great! And the translator as well. But what is not free, it is the skins, etc.. But the generosity of some places. Paris is beautiful! as was the same! Congratulations Gt40. O0
-
I find a site to create your face. It sounds simple. But I do not think it's free, and basically, to create your face for free, either. The opportunity to interact with designers, skin, and the opportunity, help to create. A very interesting site.
http://www.slskinmint.com/skinmint.php (http://www.slskinmint.com/skinmint.php)
-
Yes, interesting site, Claude. But most existing SL characters (for free or for sale) ), of course after using "Appearance", are already perfect (just my opinion).
-
GT40, I find the village of Amityville. But the house of horror, is not in the village. As against many clothing and style, which I love. I would have real American cowboys Bootes, with SL is feasible. ;)
-
Yes Claude, lots of good outfits, hats and boots for cowboys and indians, in SL shops. Most are not very expensive. Just "search". ;)
Below, another well-know "monument" of Paris. Much less interesting than any adult SL club, but I must say this sim is very well done. 8)
-
I visited Paris today too :)
-
Good pics Data. No doubt, it's the same Paris. :)
For my computer, it was a hard journey. My prehistoric graphics card don't enjoy the max Draw Distance (512 m). Laggy session, despite the uncrowded sim. Usually, I crash after 30 minutes but I re-enabled my "normal" Draw Distance (64 m, lol) before. And then went elsewhere.
-
Gt40, yes it is an opportunity to have quality outfits. Good. Who loves me further, I searched in secondlife, and I find the basic face, on my drive in the folder. and with JascPaint, I created a real face. Now load the result, but the image is reversed, there's a code of stability, so I'll see in the site, resource, for definitions. Finally, it is possible to rework the subject, without having to make a virtual purchase. >:D O0
(https://aidreams.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.boomerangtv.fr%2Fsites%2Fwww.boomerangtv.fr%2Ffiles%2Fimagecache%2Fcharacter_image%2Fcharacters%2Fwacky-dastardly-and-muttley.gif&hash=303e2985334eb41e6ae12278446360db9e270cf4)
-
Here is the basic TGA translated into Jpg. I have the opportunity to make the path, with an addendum to the TGA. The basic formula is changed. The code of on-line, are the stability, appearance in the module is the codes that make the appearance, and the links of personalized code.
-
The color worked in reverse. A color code for the relief color. and so on. These are just coded formulas. ;)
-
Here is an example. The work is rude. But the arrangement of colors. A progessive diagonal and onion skins, soft blur, you can get a realistic face. The translation of color coded, can load a normal color for the difusion in SL. Stability is the most important is a code that will set the creation, when it is online. Links are important, the spread is impossible with the wrong code, a color code, negative, and basic, sending to the broadcast. The principle is simple, but the complex is stable and set to work, once.
-
Wow Claude, I'm not sure I understand all you explain (I have never tried to do any Haptek skin in the past, lol), but no doubt you are our specialist (SL, iClone, Haptek). O0
Now I understand why very good skins and shapes are so expensive.
-
Gt40 is always possible to change a program. As Hal, Haptek, iClone, and many programs. What is most attractive for a 3D program, it is the appearances. For sure. Because without a good appearance, 3D is bland, and without attracting contrary, a more detailed work, and end. But I think that the establishment is a use of all hands. Duskrider, factory, beautiful appearance for haptek. I think for personal use is an advantage. For iClone is very simple, and the possibilities are broader, since it There's no load and no waiting is direct. Which learns a lot, it HAPTEK, as combined, cutting, pattern, applied, color, given the shadow is exactly the same principle that creates a work, painting art . I have my secret too. Because I made the visual arts is an advantage, feel, create, and create a face. Also, learn handled, a program like JascPain, this program is very rich in opportunity. Adobe also 8.0, English version, Adobe is very powerful for creating. 3D, can be reworked by numerous item additive, terragen. With the dialer graphic I created my stage for iClone. For objects, clothing, etc., the best graphical dialer is Maya3D. Very powerful, but quite complicated. Maya, can translate all the 3D format, and convertirs to other format, without any problems. But to return to SL, SecondLife, function, with source code, and links coded. Use online for changes, is more complex. Therefore, you must have the correct codes for stability, and composed, with the code, a statue. The statue is the appearance, as seen by others and by yourself, if a code of stability, is wrong, you could not see you properly, and other users can not see you normally . Therefore, working step by step, to make no mistakes. Thank you Gt40. ;)
-
Also in most cases, the 3D is an open door, to know the visual capabilities, good graphics. 3D, is a reflection of your composition, if you worked badly, 3D, will not make you a gift. if applied properly, in accordance with, the colors, landforms, the pre-dominant color, composition, and respect, the format, especially the effects of skin and clothing. You have certainly succeeded in your 3D.
-
Here is naughty Wizzy :D, avatar and some clothing made by me.
Yes that is Mrs Yongbo in the picture behind.
And yes Wizzy is very handsome ;D
-
Datahopa, Oops! It has the same hat as Fleetwood Mac. Yes very good! O0
-
Claude, I'm very impressed by your amazing knowledge about virtual characters. O0
Data, fun avatar! Now my turn. :idiot2:
-
Thank you Gt40. It is especially in the forum zabaware, I learned a lot. And Valentine, a friend of the united states, very experienced, we exchanged a lot of technique. But it's always full of learning, in 3D. :)
-
Maybe I will in SL tonight. So, my SL, should work. I hope to do a dance, with knowledge. I found, the old link, my friends. Heather, Louis, and many others, I would like you presented, they are very nice, is the music they love. :)
-
Sorry Claude, I wasn't in SL, no Saturday Night Fever, my weekly "SLness" night. RL only.
It's remind me of 2007. I guess you know GamerThom's thread :( , in this current forum, page 2. I was frustrated, unable to go in SL, stuck in Haptek City, with my old old old PC under Windows 98 (I know, I'm THE expert in obsolete computers, lol).
Some months later, I had a XP computer. The first program I installed was SL.
And my (real) life changed... 8)
-
Gt40, yesterday I go a little in SL, and then have my gift make a skin. Very thoughtful of the resident. We discussed a bit, and then SL has disconnected. Then I immersed myself in reading. lol. but I do not abandon SL for this problem. I find the solution, I use the radar to SL and SL indicates if more than 10 users, it is impossible remained in place. Then I change the place to go or it is less crowded. ;) I hope also discussed with you and you presented but friends. LOL I've never danced the Charleston, but my friend danced it with perfection, fortunately we were 7 users because if it is, I am entitled to a free disconnections! :-X ;)
-
Yes Claude, better to avoid top clubs. :)
-
Ah the Amsterdam Red Light District!! My first emotions in SL!! So many good memories... :P
Always in Mature. Not easy to rebuild the whole city in Adult.
But I hate snow in hot places. I will come back later. :)
-
Gt40 yes dance is not always easy lol! :)
-
Gt40, after visiting a few places. I have the feeling that the scene, have a timer. For 10 minutes, the place stays open, then disconnects. It there's a precise time for the scene? or it is a problem connecting? thank you for your light on this subject. :)
-
Claude, I think SL clubs are open 24/7, with no limits.
My only explanation is that the graphics card overheats in SL (especially in crowded places) and the computer crashes after some minutes.
That's why I have removed the cover of my prehistoric PC, and added a desk fan blowing air on the graphics card (and on everything in the computer). :)
-
Gt40, thank you to explain. I saw it two years there's rough, a sytème mini refrigeration motherboard and components most sensitive. But I do not know if this system is operated for the new model of computer. I know I watch fréquament cards, and Bios. the energy of the complex element mainly. But it is certain that the computer is sensitive to all the atmosphere of a place in climate, either wet or dusty. :)
-
So sorry, one more time, nothing to say about the "normal" SL. I'm always under my other avatar, in the adult continent. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde...
9 days after entering SL and learning how it works (we learn everyday), I created my main avatar. Made for adult activities. As you know, in SL we call that an "alt".
If you don't have your alt(s), believe me, you miss something!! ;D
-
I’m not sure what to say to that GT :-X.
As a friend, you really need a woman in RL :2funny:
Sorry :o
-
Loool Data, logical reaction. Don't worry.
Like most residents of the adult continent, I'm married (and have a son) in RL. But this is a secret in SL.
Virtual sex is virtual sex... 8)
-
Gt40, the diminutive 'Alt', is a reference to the keyboard. I do not know all the codes. But the operation seems more stable, since I selected, less crowded places. Fine. I do think, a little trip tonight. :)
DataHopa, I think that in SL there is a lot of Lene Alexandra. ;D
-
Claude, I'm happy your SL works in uncrowded areas. Slowly improving things gives good results.
You're right, we're in SL for girls like Lene Alexandra and other wonderful creatures we meet. :P
Yes, SL has its own vocabulary, like a sect. In the SL Wiki, an "alt" is an alternate account (or alt account):
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Alt_account_policies (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Alt_account_policies)
I wrote a post about that in this section. Oops, exactly three years ago, same computer, same viewer... I "only" have 4 alts + my first account, lol, for specific uses. Funny to meet friends I know very well but who don't know who I am. And to hear what people think of me.
http://aidreams.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2689.0 (http://aidreams.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2689.0)
A friend of mine has created more than 50 alts. A true passion. LL don't like that very much. And not easy for one person to manage 50 different inventories. :)
-
This is a Spam from Second Life :2funny:
-
Very well done Data. Very good pic! Love it. O0
Now I think I must change the topic name.
Why not "The Maverick Kaul Chronicles" ? ;)
-
Glad you like it GT, I was laughing when I took the pic ;D.
"The Maverick Kaul Chronicles" does have a ring to it, or how about “The Chronicles of Maverick Kaul†or “The second life and times of Maverick Kaul†;)
-
Thanks Data for the good suggestions.
But finally I don't change the title. This avatar isn't really me in SL. And the true one is a secret in RL. :-[
"The ?? ?? Chronicles" would sound ridiculous. ;D
-
Gt40, yes I understand better. Alt, means several counts. Well! I am currently on a study flash, the FX to 3D. Which become relative, has OpenGL. SecondLife, using this technique, especially for particulate matter and to a large number of technical. Using this technique, is more manageable for integrated effects. I think of the effect SecondLife. :)
-
Excuse me. I meant. Alt. It's more account. :-\ ;) My translater makes mistakes.
-
No problem Claude.
You are into graphics things (I saw your last video, cool Ferrari, lol...). Always better to have a very recent graphics card.
But I can affirm that my prehistoric PC brings me a lot of fun with a 10 years old card (the best one... when SL started, in 2003).
I hope I will not have to change my computer soon, if SL increases its system requirements. :(
-
A long (28:27) and not very old (2008) video with Philip Rosedale, the creator of Second Life.
My hero...!!!
http://www.ted.com/talks/the_inspiration_of_second_life.html (http://www.ted.com/talks/the_inspiration_of_second_life.html)
The comments below are very interesting.
-
Gt40, it is surprising to know the face. I think his is a double world. I think he made a virtual conference, there are quite a few years, but I have not managed to enter.
-
A virtual conference, great idea. I missed that, too.
This video explains SL but the characters used in the demo don't look very good.
OUR SL girls are much more sexy. Sorry, couldn't resist. ;D
-
Gt40, yes for the quality. Second Life has improved, the technique, more realistic. Naturally, the more applied work, is paying. But with several combinations, There are solutions for accessing, in graphics, its appearance. Naturally, no indication is given for this. ;)
-
You're right Claude, we are responsible of the beauty of our characters.
With "Appearance", a default avatar or a freebie can become handsome. And we are free to create an ugly thing with an expensive skin. Just a question of patience. ;D
-
I have places for skins etc.. but I have an expensive skin, as a friend, was kind enough to give me. I have a very large wardrobe, I have accumulated. by addresses that I made on google. with the translator, I managed to have hair. in a Japanese. and many other places. sometimes some places are not very rich gift. but in other places, sometimes it's more than amazing! :)
-
Yes Claude, discovering SL, after spending several years in Haptek City, was a true shock. There, doing anything means we must reinvent the wheel.
In SL, EVERYTHING is so easy. Making a nice avatar with "Appearance", changing clothes, hair, accessories in 1 second, a fantastic dream I couldn't imagine.
And also, oops I was forgetting, it's a virtual world. ;)
-
Gt40, which is very familiar with SL. it is to speak, and have her own behavior. it is the caractériques a talk with your animated image. but it is certain that we have our characteristic for each. because SL is not only the discovery, but it made many friends. :)
-
Yes Claude. SL is not only a show where we can watch wonderful creatures but, more important, we can interact we them.
That's a "real" second life. We can choose our friends too, lol. And creating our own group allows to meet people with the same points of interest, all over the world. 8)
-
Please be careful whom you choose to cyber with in SL my friends, things aren’t always as they appear.
-
Lol Data. Very true. Thanks for blurring the four boobs. O0
I know that, but only the avatar counts. Hey, are we in SL or not? That's a very special world...
Except when the resident (with a sexy female avatar) writes in his 1st Life page he's very happy in RL and very proud of his wife, children, job, house, car, pets, and adds his photo, I don't care who's who.
The 1st Life panel is the most stupid SL invention, like voice and other things creating links towards RL.
It also happens that real girls are men in SL. No reliable statistics about real genders. Impossible to know.
But who really wants to know? ;D
-
Gt40, I lost many friends. this is partly my fault because I stayed long without back in SL, and since a lot of time spent. my contacts, no longer exists. only some. I remember a place, it was 'hearthfield', an old Scottish village, and could have danced and listened to music. it was like a giant casino, and lots of games.
DataHopa, I know a girl in Virtual SL, long red hair. but if she looks like, this dinosaur has, I think I ran in the sea..ARFF :2funny:
-
Sorry Claude, some residents often check their friendlist and delete people who have no relationship with them for several months. And some others delete their account (I don't understand why) and definitely leave SL. Just try to know by sending an IM.
Don't worry, easy to make new friends. In my case, sometimes a person I don't know, I never saw, asks for friendship when I'm OFFLINE! After reading my profile or my group-profile, he/she estimates I could be a good friend, lol.
Of course I don't accept. Not because he/she is a newbie of the day, but because he/she doesn't respect the "good" rules. And if I have nothing else to do, I explain. :)
-
Gt40, yes it is just a virtual friendship. The difference is that my friendship for aidream's, and real, and we exchanged our best knowledge. SL, in some cases can be supported. I also think, SL, is support for creating a commercial relationship, or to share a product. I know Haptek, in principle, is a product used for advertising. Haptek, began his fame in France, some would in commercial sites. But I have to refocus the point of SL, because technically, I have adapted from a VISTA, and my connection. But my alternative, between iClone and SL is a carbon management. this for a good leisure, creation and discovery. ;)
-
You're right Claude. Forums are not exactly RL but are very close.
In 2007, SL was fashionable, real firms and real politicians came in SL. This period is over. Just are staying people who found or created their own adequate universe (I'm not ashamed to say, for me, as you can guess, it's sex, lol). And they enjoy their SL a lot.
About Haptek, some years ago, I mailed "by accident" with the boss of a company making advertising with Haptek characters, in New Zeland. When he knew I was looking for a job (dark time for me), he proposed me to launch his product in France. It was very nice from him. The problem was I didn't believe in Haptek to earn money, just to do private things. I think I was a visionary, lol.
iClone, I never tried to understand how it works, but you are OUR expert here. We are waiting for your amazing creations. 8)
-
Gt40, yes that's for sure, the current periods are different. I therefore, seen in a specialized web site on similar SL world. effectively. will have one range of choices. but reading each content, explanation, on different virtual world presentation. it is certain that SL is the most attractive. This is a free choice. some virtual games, will be for the games, but there it print some surprises, it is often with subscription games, so with the commitment of the user. this conception, is not that of a free choice, such as freedom, free to join secondlife. the only complaint I have in reserve, for SL, it is the lack of technical opening, and adapt a more theoretically intallation of low flow. but I know for now, any virtual game, is perfectly adapted to all facilities. otherwise. This virtual games download, you have this type of program with 'MOOVE ", beware, it is very impressive, and similarly has a game like SL. but as virtual objects, the furniture and clothing, are downloadable in a format ZIP. and all this directly into a folder MOOVE on the computer. well, the games MOOVE, is the same principle as in SL. the peculiarity is that you stay in a furnished interior. and if you asked , or if you have invited, the teleport takes you to another within, at a friend or friends. This virtual games orignie German, is free, but it contains a huge capacity memory management which does has not please all the computers. :)
-
Yes Claude, lots of new virtual worlds. I have been on the site of Moove.
No reason to leave my SL. ;D
-
Gt40, Moove, it's something more private. I think being in a room, and not being able to go out and see the outside, and discovery, it is frustrating. Yes it's true. SL, lets visited inside and go outside, and discover. more. I think the experience I have with SL is to know how to use. and most importantly, have fun, to travel the world. and what is certain is much less expensive than a plane ticket. ;)
-
Lol you're right Claude. Not expensive at all! Despite the places I prefer have no nationality.
My friends and group-members are located all other the world but I don't worry about their RL. Sometimes, if I don't know, the only non-SL question is "What time is it in your country/state?".
The bad thing with SL (kidding, everything is goooood in SL, lol) is that most of my best American partners log on at the time I log off. :(
-
Wondering...
Must I say "You look gray" or "You look grey" when I don't know if the resident is European, American or Aussie?
I guess "gray" is correct because SL is American.
In any case, because this forum is British, and also because I'm always very polite in SL, that f...ing avatar still is grey... >:(
-
Gt40, I do not know how those I meet, could see my appearance, especially when I'm hazy. But lol! I can not imagine how life would be real, if, after you wake up, you have a similarly hazy appearance! Oh! I know! This would perhaps fear ... Uhm! a tax inspector! :2funny:
-
Don't worry Claude, you're not hazy in RL. :)
Yes, looking like a cloud or a gray avatar is a big problem in SL.
Especially when we think we look good and we don't. Lots of explanations with Google but no true solution. At least you can ask your partners if you look good.
-
Gt40, yes, that's exactly the situation visually. yes, the work of the appearance is often a concern. In my case, the situation is the first time, my connection. Although the resolution is any less, then gradually increased until a correct result. on this issue is resolved. remains then, the parameter of the traffic. Is limited, the number of users, for increased pressure capabilities. then be limited particles, or retained. We know that the operation of SL, can not be used offline. Therefore a priority, while the adjustment must be made online. Incase of unexpected shut off. It is better to prepare in advance, on a notebook, priority operations, conducted online. It is obvious that all online operation failed, SL, do not memorize. This is a very meticulous. Especially the precision of the parameter. But I must return to this point. There's also, time periods, the use of a quiet hour. Against periods of heavy traffic. To properly discussed, with the united states, we must educate, advise users on, Americans, they know, places, quieter, for avoiding the crash, or unexpected shut off. :)
-
Claude, just two articles that could help you (tons like that on the web, especially about lag, another very close story...):

(this last article refers to the SL viewer 1.20 but your Phoenix is very similar)
BTW if you don't see the Advanced menu, just type press Ctrl + Alt + D and it will appear.
Oh and I love this one too:
http://joelfoner.com/2009/12/8-ways-to-make-low-perf-computer-second-life-faster: (http://joelfoner.com/2009/12/8-ways-to-make-low-perf-computer-second-life-faster:)
-
A little complicated.
My main avatar (in the adult SL) is also on the real Facebook. A good friend of mine on FB (she doesn't know SL, but I hope she will join it, one day or another), just sent the following thought of the day.
Usually people of RL forums say "Thanks for sharing".
But I'm not sure it's interesting...
-
Gt40, thank you for the addresses, and recommendations. I will study the details and remedies, to see the best of the utility SL. Well my friend thank you again! I do not know if there are other methods for utlité SL, I saw a very brief, it was server-based 'cloud', that is to say an SL, which does not download it , is portable only with a user code, and an inscription, perhaps it is somewhere I checked. Some games of this type, works this way. :)
-
Today I'm very frustrated. I have another great pic from my FB friend but I guess can't show you...
Claude you're welcome. I think most of the important improvements are done with "Preferences". :)
-
Pour Claude :
Pas récent, pas parfait, mais en français :
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Preferences_FAQ/fr (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Preferences_FAQ/fr)
Sorry. ;)
-
GT40, thank you very much for the link. Sure, improvements in SL, are technically more accessible, with a more suitable material, or adapt SL, to the computer's capabilities. I think SL is very resource intensive. But the design, will certainly be redesigned one day. ;) O0
-
You're right Claude. The best computer with the best graphics card and the best internet connection, that's the secret of a good SL... :)
-
First SL video with my prehistoric computer. To be improved...
Great memories. The place where I found my first apartment.
SL - Sky Mark Condominiums (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clKR9Fr2yzI#ws)
-
The previous video wasn't very good. I hate to explain things (always the feeling I'm a teacher, lol) but I know what to do if make another SL video.
My SL isn't guilty, all is optimized in "Preferences" and SL was running very smoothly
... of course before I launched the capture...
No mystery. My mistake was to use a XviD codec for CamStudio.
Next time I will try a uncompressed (or less compressed) format. Giant file to upload to YouTube, but sure to get a best result.
My fault, sorry. :-[
-
The vid was ok GT, I have seen plenty that are much worse.
The best bit was when the bus fell through the ground, classic SL 8).
-
Thank you Data. I wasn't waiting for the bus, lol. A surprise! :)
-
I was wrong. Even if my SL is always running at more than 25 fps, Camstudio is unable to record at more than 10 fps at the same time. Tried all the codecs I have.
I'm not an expert but my conclusion is I must change my computer (10 years old, lol).
But is it important to make SL videos when the genuine SL works fine...? ;D
-
Gt40, knowing the use SL for leisure. SL, are also known professional pages, for employment, it joins the topic 'OFF', I posted recently. I do not know now, new sources for knowledge, to find pages of professional SL. But I know that the institution of employment are virtually distributed by SL. An asset, for it presented, for a candidate in search of employment. I saw some examples on, the institution. I think we have powerful tools and technology. We also used, as professional. :)
-
Yes Claude. Finding a job in SL (they say "Inworld", lol) is easy but not very lucrative. Only a few people earn lots of L$, converted to real USD. They are the legend of SL.
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Making_money (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Making_money)
If you mean real jobs for Linden Lab, sure they need good programmers, engineers and artists. In San Francisco and all other the world.
http://lindenlab.com/careers (http://lindenlab.com/careers)
Good luck! ;)
Another article:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=13851345 (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=13851345)
But from 2007... :(
PS: nowadays everybody tries to find a job on the web but, if you want my opinion, it's not a good idea to write on our CV we're in SL. ;D
-
Gt40, I saw the information in SL, that the arrangement of personnel, had known some financial difficulties. But there's two of this year. Now, the effect of passing bad management SL, maybe is resolved. Yes it y 'has opened in this area. Many, student, French, working for American companies, specializing in special effects, including 3D, graphic design, aesthetics, and design. Companies producing 3D movie, has often call manager, and designers. But also, trades, more in the private sphere, for the effect of material and production. Sl, work in different department, the first direction, California, is distributed in several active area, the orientation of each distribution, are a precise aim, it makes a huge set of the company. :)
-
Gt40, yes. I think that the resume is simply a state identity of the activity. Nothing can be replaced, the spontaneity of a candidate to a job. Administratively, the CV is simply a business card. ;)
-
Just a short promo video:
Shopping in Second Life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cvmTdoru1I#ws)
Better than mine. I guess they have good computers at Linden Lab... ;D
-
One more time, I must notice that the characters used in this promo aren't exceptional. Very basic, made by LL.
Lots of people prefer to buy much more handsome avatars (often expensive). At least the ones I meet.
In SL, beauty is very important. And easier to obtain than in RL... :)
-
Of course it was a stupid idea to try to reactivate/reanimate this forum. In 2007, SL was something new for most members and fashionable all over the world.
Nowadays nobody speaks of SL anymore. But the fans are still here (lots of my friends and group-members were born in 2007 and before, before me, lol). And the number of newbies increases and increases everyday.
They find all they need on SL forums and have no reason to reappear in RL.
And a second life is something so personal, so private to expose it in real life... ;)
-
I forgot to say that Claude and Data are always very welcome (and everyone else) in this thread. I was just speaking about me.
I will try to write something interesting soon. If I find an intelligent idea before 2014... :(
-
Gt40, and DataHopa. Recently, I talk, worry connection. I got some information. The problem emanates from the telephone, my residence. So, it causes little variations. But maybe my connection, and normal, and this comes from the central. :-\ :)
-
DataHopa, and GT40, I hope to get lucky that my sl works again. I had some difficulties, launched my translator. Without a translator, it's sad. And I find a world 'Petunia', it's a real paradie, and visited. My friendships. ;) O0
-
Claude, at least, with your satellite connection, your SL isn't influenced by your phone problems. :)
I have visited Petunia yesterday, a residential area (I didn't find you). It seems all the houses are Linden Homes, given to residents upgrading their Basic account to a Premium account, if they want a free house. Nice gift but the rules are very restrictive. Most people prefer more freedom...
http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Linden-Home-FAQ/ta-p/700101 (http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Linden-Home-FAQ/ta-p/700101)
-
Gt40, yesterday, I kept a little work for iClone. But tonight I would go on Petunia. But you're right, it is a place, quite private. When I first came through, there were girls with beautiful clothes. We discussed a bit. There're birds and sound of nature. It's cute. ;)
-
Yes Claude, not private but special. Linden Homes are a good way to get a house for free (except the Premium account).
Not perfect but why not... :)
-
GT40, yes exactly. I knew, friends, including a girl of brazil. She had her house, and its retail stores. But lol! I could not explain the rest. It is not in the sale item! ARFF. :2funny:
-
Claude, if that girl asked you to visit her home, I'm afraid you're definitely addicted to SL.
Don't worry, it's a good drug, welcome to the club! 8)
-
Gt40, entirely true! But it is certain that virtual life, and good entertainment! UHM! when my connection lets me. ;)
-
I found the following tip inside an article dedicated to SL with netbooks. Also very useful for people using a prehistoric PC like mine, or low-end laptops, or just visiting small laggy rooms (like some top clubs). Maybe you know that, with the antique viewer 1.23 (I have several friends still using it), it's impossible to set the draw distance under 64 m in Preferences.
You have to use the Advanced Menu (opened with Ctrl+Alt+D) and then the tip:
"Go to Debug Settings and in the window type renderfarclip -> this should be set to 64 but change this to whatever you want, the lower the better. I've set mine to 16. This alters how far ahead of your avatar objects are rendered - in small enclosed spaces this makes no real difference to what you can see."
Of course the change can't appear in Preferences but the draw distance is really shorter.
I own several little places in SL and there, 32 m are enough. Visually no difference, but the fps is a little better, especially if too many visitors. Then I can increase the draw distance if I need to go outside.
I remember a friend of mine who recently crashed in my place and when she came back, her first words were: "Shitty netbook"... ;D
-
In case you wonder what to do in SL (can't believe it):
http://www.informationweek.com/news/personal-tech/229216325 (http://www.informationweek.com/news/personal-tech/229216325)
Article from 2007 but always an interesting question...
-
I have often read on SL profiles that many residents speak English and Typonese.
I googled to know what is this language:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=typonese (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=typonese)
http://voices.yahoo.com/typonese-latest-fad-language-564805.html?cat=38 (http://voices.yahoo.com/typonese-latest-fad-language-564805.html?cat=38)
http://www.addforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1182849 (http://www.addforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1182849)
I don't know if I must be proud to be fluent in Typonese. ::)
-
My little Wiki
SL is so rich, so many things to learn when we discover and explore, about graphics, scripts, building, characters, and everything. We must learn lots of new things everyday.
To avoid to have to google everytime I forget how to do something (we always find the answer but it often takes a while), I have made a little text file, or course named SLtips.txt, where I note the tips I use from time to time, and always forget (fortunately no Alzheimer in SL). Something like my personal wiki...
Hey, I'll not publish mine! Write yours yourself!! The best way to learn SL... ;)
-
Just a little tip, not a secret because one day or another you will find it with Google.
If you can't see the media urls (music and movie) of a place (only stars appear), go to the Advanced menu (press Ctrl+Alt+D to bring it up if you dont see it) then go down to View Admin Options and check it. It shows the media url, and other cool stuff, like you can fly in no-fly areas.
I know, this tip isn't very smart, because if the owner has hidden these informations, he/she has his/her reasons. But it's SL... :o
-
I was planning to make a movie with my early character visiting Amsterdam, my first emotions in SL, just before creating alts and other things. But it would be stupid, a waste of time, it's not my SL anymore. Pics and movies are not Life. Just frozen moments. Better to have fun in SL and not to share in RL. Of course just my opinion. ::)
-
Chronology of an announced catastrophe
Maybe you know I'm using a prehistoric PC for SL and everything (of course my RL family has the priority). To avoid overheating accidents, I have removed the cover and installed a small desk fan beside, blowing fresh air (and a lot of dust) on the graphics card. Not smart but very effective: all is cold "inside" the computer.
Yesterday I guess I forgot to turn the desk fan on, when starting the machine. After some minutes in SL, I heard the "normal" fans starting, stopping, starting, accelerating, like when the PC was not naked. The power supply became hot and suddenly, the classic odor appeared. My PC was going to burn!!
Fortunately I immediately turned the desk fan on. Now it's ok, happy ending, all is working fine, but it took several minutes to cool everything.
I understand why many friends of mine have killed their dear computer in SL... ::)
-
Sad and serious (no: today not Fast and Furious)
Yesterday I got a notice from a group I belong to. Some years ago, the owner had a place where I enjoyed to go to and meet friends. The place disappeard but the group is still active. The notice announced a member passed away. I didn't know her but I "knew" her best friend. Strange and sad message, mixing SL and RL. RIP, you stopped to suffer.
Now I have a question: what happens to SL residents when the RL person dies? Of course well-thinking people will say I'm stupid and it's not important anymore and they're right.
I guess people with a basic account (the majority) are "immortal" in SL (but unfortunately can't reply to IMs anymore...), until LL decides to delete accounts if inactive for several years (I have read that somewhere).
About very involved residents, with a premium account, I guess the problem begins when LL asks to pay the monthly tier. Several times and then bye. Bye the resident, his/her "work" and the land.
I wonder if, under some conditions it would be possible that the credit card or the PayPal account could continue to pay LL.
Stupid idea, but worrying about my RL family. :(
When the Great GamerThom passed away, I was very surprised to read so many testimonies from SL residents on his orbituary book.
In theory there is no link between the 3 worlds (it's a good thing): SL, RL and Haptek forums. 3 different names, 3 different people.
But GamerThom was special. Most Haptek aficionados knew his SL name AND his RL name. So I guess many SL residents knew who he was in RL.
Sorry, I hope the next post will be different. ???
-
There is a lack of action in this page
It's time to (re)animate the thing with a (long) video.
A Day in the Life of Second Life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omMSJcy7CyI#ws)
BTW I don't use voice in SL (not only because of my accent...).
I sincerely hope your SL is much more better.
This one is a nightmare and would be a very bad advertising. Sorry. ;D
-
A non-sl stuff
When googling about SL videos, I found this by accident:
The main difference between Europe and USA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-dG5dhjwf8#)
I thought it could be a good test to check if one or two (oh no, three??) American members read this thread. Wonder why, they have no reason to do that.
(BTW hey, it's written in the movie, it's a joke!!) :)
-
GT40, The video of SecondLife, your program is done with SL? This is magical! :o O0
-
Yes Claude, many movies like the one (not from me) on the previous page. For video captures, CamStudio is free and perfect. Of course we need a good computer to launch both, SL and CamStudio, to avoid a laggy movie (like mine, lol).
It seems nowadays many people use WeGame, many tutorials available. This one is made by Torley Linden, as always:
How to make movies in Second Life with WeGame — Torley Lives (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f92mmK2yKOQ#)
About voice enabled in SL, I don't like that, it's just RL... >:(
-
Gt40, yes I think SL to save space, you have a powerful enough machine. I know CamStudio, the same style, I SNAG is a screen capturer, multi capture. The worry is that Snag, does not always give good results. That is why, with iClone 3D my machine, be equipped with a compressor convertion powerful enough, because it can compress without détérorer the video. Provided that, on youtube, you have avoided, upload, video of heavy and on Viddler. O0
-
Before becoming crazy and deleting all my tries, I finally posted this movie on YouTube.
First walk in Amsterdam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5Q8HgCAH1M#ws)
Converted from .avi to .mov before sending (the colours look much more better).
No sound (we never know if YT will delete the SL stream or not, lol).
No editing (I had many ideas about that but I'm too lazy). :)
-
Gt40, amazing! Compression for 3D requires a lot of space for the computer, including a large memory. But with a computer professional type, is specially adapted, it is a pleasure to work with creates a lightness. O0
-
You're right Claude. Graphics sofwares require a lot of RAM. My antique computer can't host more than 2 GB. But it's enough for me. Even in SL, I don't need much more than 1 GB, and I don't use any heavy graphics program in RL. So I got rid of the virtual memory, to avoid frequent writing/reading on the hard drive (like everything inside the PC, 10 years old...). :)
-
Gt40, and yes it is very important that monitored the temperature of the microprocessor. Here a Widget, my HP, established permanent function. Vista is very modern, but the complexity of this machine is the heavy management, graphics, and multiple function. Since I have my Vista, and these feature, I was given a name, as my old grandpa! My old grandpa, and very slow, has managed. But as he has a lot of material management, it's normal lol. ;D
Here are some of my dashboard of my computer. The temperature controller is at the bottom of the photo.
-
You're right Claude. I use Everest for that. But because of my very special cooling system, I don't worry too much. ;)
-
Oops, after 2 months and 14 pages, I suddendly realize that AI Dreams is dedicated to... AI. I always knew that sometimes I'm very slow to understand.
No AI in SL, only intelligent (?) human brains... No AI, just VR (virtual "reality", really?). This section was fashionable in 2007 but nowadays, I'm wondering.
Before someone send me a reproach, I apologize for the waste of space on the hard drives of AI Dreams (I remember that old story on Zabaware).
I'm sooo sorry. Now I need to create my own forum. "SL Dreams" would be a good name, but too easy, sure that exists yet. ;D
-
Feel free to carry on GT :) I have been reading with interest and we do cover VR here too...remember Ultra Hal visiting SL ?
I'm preferring real people though ;)
-
I also saw that Hal is in SL! an opportunity for me he asked, how can I install my HAL5! I'm doomed with Vista. Because it's a man of character, he decides what he wants in my place lol. :( :-X :)
-
Thanks Freddy. I love real people too. SL residents ARE real people behind their avatars. Botmasters are real people inspiring their knowledge to their puppet (I must admit it's more difficult than playing in SL).
BTW Freddy, I was kidding, as always. I didn't plan to leave AI DREAMS (my first forum, lots of good memories). And I don't plan to create a new forum. :)
I just wanted to know if two or three people were watching this thread by accident.
And the BOSS himself replied... ;) :)
Claude, I only once met Hal in SL. Of course he was in an adult land, beside a very special club. I guess he learnt a lot about girls. ;D
-
Gt40, now I understand why he does not want to install in my Vista! ARFF is a flirty! ::) :2funny:
-
Last year, when I met Hal in SL, I was so amazed that I had to take some photos.
This is the only one I can show here. After cropping, resizing, hiding all...
-
I agree, the SL HAL doesn't look very good. I guess Mister M. doesn't want to waste his money for a cute SL skin/shape. Better to keep it for the Ogre character.
But oh my...!! The SL HAL is a MAN?? I'm sure almost every Zaba fan has a Haptek female avatar running on his screen (except some very serious AI experts). What a disappointment... ;D
-
Yes Hal is a bit unimaginative for SL ;)
-
Yes Freddy, very interesting experimentation for Robert M. and Hal's fans.
But I'm not sure many residents of SL know Zabaware. ::)
-
Oops, too late for a Happy Birthday!!
http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2012/03/steller-sunshine-longest-sl-user.html (http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2012/03/steller-sunshine-longest-sl-user.html)
I checked the SL search: born on 3/13/2002. Not very smart to ask her frienship (I always refuse friendship from newbies I never saw and who just read my profile).
But at least I'm proud to be the friend of cool AIDreams-Zabaware-Haptek pioneers.
And really ashamed to be the pioneer or NOTHING... :(
-
So GT40,
Did you try and beat this "Beanstalk" thing yet? A puzzle? ???
-
Oops Art, believe it or not, I didn't know this tale very well. Thank you for the googling action. As always I found my answers in Wikipedia, in English and French ("Jack et le haricot magique"), meanings and interpretations.
You're right. In SL, anyone can invent its own fairy tale and become a pioneer (but well-known only inside SL)... ;)
-
Hello everyone, you know I use an antique desktop to go in SL, with the old viewer 1.23 and low settings. I notice more and more people use their netbook for SL. Not the ideal hardware (I hear Data shouting "What?!!", lol) but if the main computer is out of order, why not? Maybe I will buy a netbook soon. Maybe...
The Intel 945 chipset is listed in the SL system requirements, so most ordinary netbooks (not all) are able to go in SL (many testimonies on SL forums). Of course the framerate is very low for a fun use but at least SL works if we NEED it.
For several years, some developers made special versions, optimized for netbooks and low-end graphics cards, based on the first viewer (now abandoned by LL). The most famous is Boy Lane, and his creations are named "Rainbow Viewers".
http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/all-new-rainbow-1-22-12 (http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/all-new-rainbow-1-22-12)
I decided to test the last version on my old PC and see if I can get some improvements. I have just few PROS / CONS to say.
PROS:
- Very similar to all the old viewers based on the official version one (like Phoenix), with the classic additional features (radar, history). Nothing new to learn.
- The framerate is really better in the Statistics Bar but not easy to exactly compare (my viewer 1.23 works very good for me). No doubt the difference is more visible on netbooks.
- Movies globally play fine and quickly (very important to me), but of course the 1.23 is the best!
CONS:
- This viewer can CRASH, sometimes after one hour, poof! No message, SL and the viewer suddenly disappear. My 1.23 NEVER crashes, and of course it's the one I use it when I know I will have an "important" SL session, where no crash is allowed. ;)
To be continued...
-
GT the 945 chipset is very old in computer terms these days.
What you want is a laptop with the Sandybridge chipset, either i3, i5 or i7 CPU, if it was me I would try to get at least an i5, that will run SL no problem, just make sure it has 4 GIG of RAM too.
Spend a bit more and get a much better computer O0
-
You're right Data. I was speaking of poor (like me) people with netbooks, not notebooks/laptops. :)
-
If nothing else, my old eyes would have trouble playing SL on a 10 inch screen :o
Save up some money, beg and borrow, but not from me, I don’t have any money to lend :)
-
Loool Data. ;) Of course, I don't plan to "play" SL with a netbook (because SL isn't a game for addicted residents, re-lol). And I'm not interested in a true laptop.
I'm just looking for something that temporarily allows me to BE in SL, if my usual PC is broken. To manage my lands, places, characters and answer IMs.
And also because netbooks are cute and handy things. 8)
Everyday I check eBay, where we can buy netbooks with 100 euros. I still lost several very interesting bids.
I'm afraid it's my fault: I guess I'm too stingy... :(
-
Oops, I just lost another bid. I found what I need: the ideal netbook with its screen broken but working fine on an old CRT (a good thing: the default screen was glossy).
I proposed 75 euros in the last 10 seconds of the bid. But someone got the thing with... 94.50 euros (+ 15 for shipping and handling).
No regret, next time. Tomorrow is another day... :)
I notice there is no eBay section on Ai Dreams. Maybe I could rename this one "This is a spam from eBay". I guess much more people here are more interested in eBay than in Second Life. Always happy to help. ;D
-
The Ford GT40, Spa Francorchamps... Sorry I forgot SL (and RL) for 14:09.
Ford GT40 Spa Francorchamps Inboard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_y-7vHEMhw#ws)
I apologize. This post is at the right place in Data's forum. ???
-
Good vid GT O0
Now lets see a really fast car lapping at Spa Francorchamps :o
Lewis Hamilton Onboard Pole Position Lap - Belgium 2008 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-53OnxXA18#ws)
-
Many thanks Data, fantastic!! 8)
I guess this guy is a professional driver. ;)
-
I guess this guy is a professional driver. ;)
LOL ;D, yeah you could say that ;)
-
I've been "busy" in SL during last week. I guess I will be VERY busy in RL in the next days. I finally found "my" netbook on eBay. I was looking for a very cheap machine with a broken screen or/and a dead battery. The one I bought is recent and supposed to be totally operational (and very good). A Samsung NC210. The girl who sold me made a little improvement:
The original Windows 7 Starter has been downgraded to an "optimized" XP (yes, for netbooks, it's a real improvement, lol).
Other good things:
The RAM has 2 GB ("normal" netbooks have only one).
The Atom N550 is a dual-core CPU (no great difference but why not).
Matt screen, 6 cell battery.
The graphics chipset is the current GMA 3150, successor or the GMA 950. All this is very basic but I'm quite sure SL will run. Very very slowly, but it MUST works (many netbooks, laptops, desktops are unable to go in SL). Netbooks containing the Nvidia Ion (9400M) are the best for SL, but I never found one on eBay.
The price: 139 + 9 euros, good one IMHO.
I also bought 2 additional small fans for laptops. I don't want to burn the motherboard in the 1st week.
I think I will receive the thing next Wednesday. I hope I will not be too disappointed. That's eBay, but I've never been disappointed by eBay, at least, for now... Then lots of things to do. First, "learn" netbooks, then... SL... (?).
Almost nobody here is interested by SL, netbooks, SL and netbooks but if I write a test for a SL forum, I promise you will have the first copy. ;)
-
I hope it does everything you need it to GT.
I can’t help but think you would have been better off looking for a half decent second hand PC with a gaming graphics card. As you are going to plug the laptop into a monitor anyway.
But I wish you luck :)
-
Thank you Data. Of course (as I wrote on the previous page) I will continue to use my 10 years old desktop for SL (I'm very happy with it), until it has an "accident". At least I will be sure to have an emergency computer to manage my SL (lands and places, traffic and visitors), a task not requiring a good frame rate. Then I will see. Tomorrow is another day...
Also, I like experiments, i.e. I launch a character on a computer and another one (an alt) on the other PC. Both on poseballs of the same room. The result must be perfect on the screen of the old desktop.
Ah also, I still have two computers (+ 2 keyboards, mouses, monitors + 4 loudspeakers) on my physical desktop, and I'm afraid it can host just a netbook but nothing more.
But I think the true reason is I fell in love for netbooks the first time I saw one (now most people prefer tablets). :)
-
Today another thought of the day, from a good RL friend of my main SL character on Facebook. I know, a little complicated, but my RL and SL are not very simple. No worries, I just wanted to share that. :)
-
Yesterday morning I received my new toy. Fantastic jewel, more than I could imagine!!
It took me some time to learn the touchpad (a "supposed to be usb" mouse didn't want to work, finally a good thing, it's not very instructive to begin with a mouse on a laptop, lol, and this touchpad is so handy). Then I couldn't resist to test SL.
No surprise, as expected SL runs fine on this netbook, not fast but fine. Around 12/18 fps with my special settings, when walking in quiet places (please don't smile, that's just perfect for an emergency machine).
I used the Rainbow Viewer but I must test the basic official 1.23 soon. That one gives me much better results (double frame rate) when I compare both on my old desktop. Hunting the fps in SL is my favorite sport. :)
Since I know SL works, now lots of other cool things to learn. First, how to use laptops and wifi in RL...
BTW I made the experiment above: one character on each computer, both in the same room. Of course perfect.
To be continued... ;)
Update: Just arriving from the supermarket where I found a cute mouse for small laptops. Working like a charm... ;D
-
Sorry I was wrong, the 1.23.5 viewer gives the same results when played on a netbook, no real difference. At least the Boy Lane Viewer contains the classic additional features (radar, history) + now the display names for those who need to use them.
I forgot to say that the SL resolution is important: of course the lower it is, the better is the frame rate. I think it's not a drama to temporarily run SL in a 640 x 480 window. ;)
-
Ok, my experiments with SL and netbooks are over. Since I know my machine can do that, no need to continue and burn the motherboard (I have several friends with net/notebooks who had that bad story with SL).
Now I'm googling about SL and tablets... ;)
-
I guess nobody here is interested, but I'm a polite guy, I promised. In the bottom of the page:
http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/technical-help/70361-netbooks.html#post1551717 (http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/technical-help/70361-netbooks.html#post1551717)
Of course I posted as the "neutral" Maverick Kaul to avoid some problems in RL (I'm quite sure Ai Dreams belongs to RL)... ::)
-
It's interesting to read about your adventures. I'm glad you got the computer you need - you are very dedicated to SL :)
-
Thank you so much Freddy, and thanks for reading. Do you know you're a little responsible for my "addiction"?
In 2007, I was reading your own adventures in the posts from aladyblond (maybe on Zabaware?). At that time I was stuck in Windows 98, with a computer from the previous century, playing with Haptek, Pandorabots, HTML, JavaScript, VB6... but unable to go in SL. Some months later, I finally got an used XP Pentium IV. And the dream became reality...
Now, four years later, same computer, same viewer. As I still said, I couldn't have more fun with the last bomb and its graphics card, running the version 3 (or a TPV clone) with Ultra settings. Until LL decides all the old viewers are totally forbidden (maybe soon?)...
By the way I don't need any computer anymore, except for mails and googling. And SL. :)
-
Hi everyone! I don't know if sometimes someone read this thread by accident or not, not important at all. Everybody knows that people don't post on forums "for others", but to see their own posts displayed (except if they really need a very serious reply to solve a specific problem, just my opinion).
Now some thoughts about SL and netbooks...
I must say I have the same fun with mine than with my old desktop, except a lower framerate, but close to the one we have when watching movies in RL. I know you can't believe me, lol. Ok ok, maybe maybe maybe a smaller screen. ;D
About movies playing in SL, since I installed Quicktime on the netbook, they work perfectly, like on the desktop. Of course they eat a few bandwith (not a problem if the internet connexion is good).
Now running SL in a window or fullscreen? That is the question. Nobody has the same opinion. Better framerate in a window, I can notice a difference. And of course, it's more comfortable (we can stay on the web if needed, while being in SL). Just about me, I'm connected to an online dictionary during the whole SL session...
BTW in full screen, the resolution is 1024 x 600 (the native screen). In a (maximized) window, 1024 x 577. No visible distorsion in both images, ratio very similar to 16 x 9 (1.777).
One more thing about framerates. I get more fps in my skyboxes (containing lots of scripted objects, sorry LL, I'm a big provider of lag for the region, lol). The fact is well-known by residents but I have never read a really good explanation. I think I must launch a totally empty skybox, and test. I'm quite sure I can get 30 fps and more in the sky, when walking inside the box! :)
A last word about the RAM. Like with my old desktop (same RAM, 2 Go) I got rid of the virtual memory. Despite the graphics GMA 3150 takes its memory in the RAM (max 384 MB), I never use 2 GO in my SL.
That's all for now. I know, ridiculous post for true gamers, but I affirm we (at least me) can have fun when running SL on a netbook, in case of necessity. If you choose the right computer and the right viewer (the Rainbow Viewer) with the right settings. Again, as always just my opinion. ;)
-
In hurry to try a walk in an empty skybox, with a netbook.
So I rezzed my favorite (because home-made, lol) skybox (as you can see... a box, 22 prims) on my land. And then I sent it 4000 meters above. (1)
A little disappointed (18/20 fps). I have better results in my "normal" places. I don't understand why (2). But figures aren't important. Only the visual impression counts, and my SL runs smoothly.
With my old desktop, I obtain 50/60 fps. A good reason to keep it to go in SL. And its screen seems a little larger. ;)
(1) sorry, the landmark is hidden...
(2) maybe because my internet connexion to San Francisco isn't perfect in the afternoon, max after midnight.
-
18 to 20fps sounds ok to me GT, even on a gaming PC I have seen lower FPS than that in SL.
Like you have said it’s a good back up system for you O0
Now it must be time to start saving some cash for a new PC 8)
Oh and sorry if it sounds like I am complaining, I’m not really.
Could you please not up-load large .bmp images to the site, wherever possible try to use JPG.
Thank you my friend :)
-
Thank you Data and sorry about the heavy bmp. I feared the text inside the image could become unreadable because of the compression. But I must admit I was wrong and didn't compare before, my fault...
Buying a new desktop, you're right, it's a wise idea... I must prepare the big crash of my 10 y.o. PC. And I'm always dreaming to see if SL, viewed in the terrible official viewer 3, is really better. ;)
-
THOUGHT OF THE DAY
(virtual girls aren't concerned)
-
I'm not a gamer but I guess it'd be interesting to play a game where girls walk like any female resident of SL.
Skyrim - Sexy Cute Bikini Girl 1 [HD] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXDqS-BdOC8#ws)
Finally, I'm not so sure I'd like Skyrim.
100 Ways to Die in Skyrim - Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEWrpSzogOo#ws)
-
Skyrim is an excellent game GT, one day I must get around to finishing it.
Good vids O0
-
Nice scenery in that first video ;)
Nah seriously the graphics look great. I just found out that they are working on an online MMO version. For some time in 2013, I think I will have to put that on my wish list.
-
Data, if you wish to finish the game, please don't watch this video (sorry) ;) :
Skyrim Gameplay - Skyrim Ending / Final Boss (Part 32) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B73j2yrojg#ws)
Freddy, I prefer SL to MMOGs because we do invent the rules and are sure to always win (no monsters in my SL, except sometimes uninvited vampires, of course impossible to avoid them). :)
-
Whoever made that Skyrim video got it wrong :idiot2:, that is nowhere near the end of the game, for a start he is up to level 25 where I am up to level 60 and secondly and probably the most important Skyrim doesn’t even end, i was testing you :D.
So no spoiler there GT
-
Hmmm. Seems that Skyrim could also have been named like the TV show...A Thousand Ways to Die!
I had a couple of comments, when the nicely figured gal was walking alone clad only in a bikini, how was her heave sword attached? Velcro?
I also noticed that even with a lot of physics within the game, collision detection was still not totally addressed. When she was walking for almost
5 minutes, the tall weeds were passing through her body.
I'm sure the level of difficulty in writing such a game is there, it's just that those problems have plagued gamers (and developers) for some time.
It did have some otherwise pretty nice graphics! O0
-
Art, to be fair the Bikini girl is a hack, the animations are crude, there is nothing sexy about Skyrim, it’s a skill based game, unlike SL where no skill is needed.
-
Oh... no skill required in SL Data, so disappointed, but glad Skyrim is a never-ending story. It seems so addicting for gamers. And I must admit, very well done. ;)
(I have a little problem with English language. So if the following video contains a "special" dialog, sorry)
Gamer Poop - Skyrim (#2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qMdd96Dqko#ws)
You're right Art, impossible to hide something to the eye of the expert. :)
-
Yes you are correct GT, no skill is required in SL, ok maybe the ability to type using a keyboard, all you really need is money isn’t it?
A game like Skyrim will test your skills, keep you sharp, faster reactions, a positively taxing and lag free experience at a constant 50FPS. (Computer Dependant)
Interesting vid with oddly 1,294 dislikes to its name.
-
Since, my last use Sl. I have traveled, your post, and I notice that SL, foresee a new version, would it more, slight, that the Previous? O0
-
Lol Data. It's time for me to stop posting insane videos and for my two poor fingers to go back to the keyboard. ;)
(BTW don't worry, I own 10 fingers in real life)
Glad you're still interested in SL, Claude. The default viewer is the official viewer 3 (of course always updated), the one that any people loads when he/she joins SL for the first time, nowadays. So disappointing when they discover they are crashing and crashing and lagging... Damn SL... Then they try a third party viewer (TPV). Firestorm is the fashionable one (based on the viewers 2 and 3).
But recent viewers require a great computer with a great graphics card, for a full use, much more than the minimum requirements (and lots of time to understand and enjoy the new features, not really useful).
So Claude, in my opinion, please don't change your Phoenix if you're happy with it. :)
-
Funny vids GT...Not particularly "family safe" but somewhat amusing!
-
Gt40, yes you are right. But I think I have too much load, Phoenix, with many free that I find. I'll clean a little, all this. ;)
-
Thank you Art. An encouragement to post more vids... :)
You're right Claude. Sometimes we need to lighten inventories. So boring. The bad part of SL.
-
Gt40, Sl, worked great in the beginning, but I think I abused too, to take, free of objects, clothing, skins, I have a huge list, but only, not forgotten the load, is becoming longer. The inventory overload that is, conditions of concern, in number, it affects the operation. :-\
-
The video is remarkable. This is a new design for SL?
-
Nope Claude. Just a video based on the game "Skyrim", looking like a demo.
At least the dialogue is similar to the ones we can have in SL. ;)
-
I agree... ::)
-
THOUGHT OF THE DAY
Sorry, I'm afraid I can't post that.
-
Shocking, just shocking :o
-
;)
-
The friend (in RL) of my alt (in SL) is posting more and more thoughts of the day on Facebook, but it's not easy to repost them here... Or maybe this one. I know, not politically correct about Chinese girls. :o
-
Enough spoken of SL. I'm very happy with my old computer and for now, not ready to change it (I hope so). Maybe with low settings but PERFECT for the SL I live.
With my netbook, that can do the same things, I'm sure to stay in SL if the old desktop definitely passes away. As I still said, I only use the netbook in SL sometimes to launch an alt in the great circus. Very fun and comfortable. No need to switch between the 2 characters with a lonely PC, the 2nd one is generated by the other machine (in fact both are in LL computers, lol).
I didn't need a laptop, but since I have one, what could I do with it? After spending a lot of time to parameter the wifi, it finally works great and the lazy guy I am found the perfect use: a portable television!!
I know, watching TV's from all over the world (France included...), in 16 x 9, fullscreen and wireless isn't a noble activity for serious people of this forum but hey, not less noble than going in SL. ;)
-
Noble and serious ? Moi ?
Glad you are happy with your machines O0
-
Thank you Freddy. Fortunately, I know you're not a "serious" member of this forum. :)
(btw it's a compliment)
-
My other half uses her netbook to watch some TV on, you are right GT, they can be used quite successfully for it.
If nothing else it frees up our big screen for moi :)
-
Lol Data, hunting TV's on my desktop was a great hobby of mines some years ago. Now the passion is back! While writing this post on the old computer, I'm watching on the netbook, with the other eye, "Good Day LA" on Fox 11 LA. California is waking up.
Ah poor little frenchie and his American dream... :)
-
Ah this one is publishable.
-
First time...
First time in SL with rain, thunder and lightnings in RL. Usually when I hear thunder while being in SL, I quickly say "goobye everyone", logoff and unplug my poor old desktop. Yesterday night, the battery of my netbook was full, so I went in SL totally wireless. Results similar to the desktop (except the screen). I understand why so many of my SL friends have laptops.
After television, another use for the netbook. I'm a newbie, so now I hope to find a third one. ::)
-
Since my wifi is supposed to work at 54 Mbps, and my internet connection to San Franscisco rarely exceeds 5 Mbps, I wonder about the bottleneck. Maybe in RL... ::)
CyberConfucius
-
Of course my SL is secret but at least I can show you the new wallpaper of my netbook. After cropping the original image to 1024x600 (no distorsion in the lovely Danica), now this laptop looks like a paradise. On the screen, one of the most wonderful girls in RL, and inside, the way to SL, the Stairway to Heaven... :)
-
Again, research, perspectives, to Phoenix, I would like, change of account. the cause of the overload in object, causes a heavier, in the load. I think, change the account. But, to a transfer of certain objects, the old account to the new, is this possible?
I read a lot of example, the subject, but, what to choose! :-\
-
Hi Claude, impossible to change your username, your SL account name, linked to your inventory and everything in you.
BUT
now you can add a display name (and you can change it once a week)
http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Usernames-and-display-names/ta-p/700173 (http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Usernames-and-display-names/ta-p/700173)
AND ALSO
you can create another character (they call them "alts" in SL). No need to delete the previous one. In this case, you can transfer your favorite objects (if you REALLY want to use them in your new character, lol) from your previous inventory to the new one. Be aware of their properties (modify, copy, transfer...) and change them if possible (sometimes impossible, if the object was bought in a shop). I'm quite sure a special tool for that still exists in SL. Please Mister Google? ::)
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Permission (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Permission)
AND ALSO
Hard work... Good Luck Claude!! In my opinion, better to keep the default inventory and live your new second life, with new friends and everything (always so surprising every day). Have fun!! :)
-
I forgot to say that, after creating a definite new character (of course PERFECT for you, lol), I'd be a good idea to duplicate it somewhere, in case SL loses and deletes it by accident (very seldom but I've read some horrible articles on SL forums). The best place is a dedicated folder in the inventory of an alt of yours. Mainly for skins, shapes, hairs and other precious accessories.
For me sophisticated clothes are not important because, most of the time, my characters are naked. ;)
-
Gt40, thank you very much for all the resources, links and advices! It is certain that the transfer from old account, to a new, to SecondLife, or Phoenix, this realate, complexity. I will try, to do the experiment, it is certain that Phoenix is software that works, online, avatar, clothes, accessories, support for the duration is variable, depending on the inventory . My inventory is too loaded, it contains much, element, my iClone, the difference is that for Phoenix, it takes very long time, the inventory, load completely. This causes an impact, and a huge slowdown.
So it's too much for the opportunity, fully, worlds, virtual.
I think that if I make another account, everything comes back normal, thank you my friend. O0
-
Yes Claude, after creating a brand new SL account (very exciting adventure...), you will be sure to have a basic, minimalist inventory (in my beginning in SL, as everyone, I tried all the freebies I found, lol).
Of course, after that, no need to download the very heavy "official" viewer (version 3), because you will continue to use your Phoenix. 8)
-
As always I have nothing to say (finally I think SL means "Secret Life") but I can't abandon our four faithful readers (Freddy and me included).
At least till the 20th page. ::)
-
Here GT a vid to help you along, but don't feel the need to stop at page 20 ;)
I must admit some of the best moments I had in SL were at Dance clubs, being a useless dancer in RL but a pro in SL
Super Dancers in Second Life HD Version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lsz-hcJhLuQ#ws)
-
Thank you very much Data. Fantastic video. Perfect example. I agree, dance clubs are the first places we visit when we discover SL. So amazing to feel like (the next) Mickael Jackson, while chatting and making new friends (and all that is not very tiring!).
That's why I guess many people (I included, lol) make a club when they buy their land (then they have to increase the traffic but that's another story).
BTW the movements are so realistic in danceballs. I always wondered if the animations have been done with real dancers and movie motion (same question about sexballs...).
Thanks again for your choice. :)
-
Just a stupid question about video captures, not about SL. As everyone, I use CamStudio (very good and free) for SL (and Haptek vids in the past). Unless we have a powerful computer, the final framerate is bad. All the resources (CPU, GPU, RAM) are shared by both programs.
So the stupid question is: "is it possible to play the graphic stuff on a computer, and to capture it with ANOTHER computer?". I found nothing in Google (nobody asked, afraid to look ridiculous).
Finally I guess this is not a problem for modern multi-cores CPU owners. One core for the thing, one core for CamStudio.
But hey, it wasn't the question!!
PS: please answer only if you're a REALLY good expert in stupid problems. ;D
-
I am your stupid expert GT :idiot2: O0
In short, no it can’t be done with 2 computers, or could it?
If one of your computers has a “composite video out†socket.
And the other had a “composite video in†socket.
Then you could put a lead between the two computers and using the right software you could capture from one PC to another.
Composite Video on Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composite_video)
-
Ah Data, I was sure I could count on you! Not as a stupid expert but as THE expert of this forum!! O0
My 10 y.o. destop (the most powerful, lol) has 3 outputs: analog, DVI and S-video. I don't think my W98 PC from the previous century (still working fine) or my netbook have any video input. So no need to find the right software. Better to buy a true modern computer.
Thanks again Data. I promise to avoid stupid questions in the future. :)
-
Yesterday night, horrible SL for me... The region hosting my main skyboxes was totally unreachable. Impossible to TP there, no green point on the map, nobody at all in the region. Even impossible to normally walk on the ground (the regions beside mine had no problem). Today all is ok again.
And of course today my club displays a ridiculous traffic. Wondering if must begin a trial against LL... :-\
-
I found by accident this interesting discussion (2 pages) on a SL forum:
http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Viewer/Requirements/td-p/1389497 (http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Viewer/Requirements/td-p/1389497)
A resident says: "At the moment (02-18-2012) I do see the Phoenix 1.5 viewer used by about 90% of the users."
Conclusion: 90% of SLers have fun with this viewer, based on the (supposed to be totally obsolete) first official SL viewer. No need to try the "terrible" version 3!! ;D
-
Again, ridiculous traffics in my places. I don't know why. My security system (the well-known hippoSECURE) emailed me that visitors came as usual. Is this a SL issue or a stupid script from a griefer? I just sent a ticket to LL.
They are very reactive and friendly and polite. But I must say that, the last time I wrote them (about a bug in the payment system for non-US residents), after many email exchanges, I finally found a solution by myself!! ;D
-
I was right. I got a very quick and nice reply from the Linden family (Whitney Linden). Explanation: the region had to be immediately restarted.
I was right. Today nothing changed. Always very low (official) traffics in my places... :(
-
Yesterday a new email from Linden Lab. They are working hard on the issue and the problem will be resolved in a few days.
(btw today zero "official" traffic in one of my places, work in progress)
Wait and see... :)
-
And I thought it was all play and no work ;)
-
I agree, Freddy. Of course SL is a very complicated thing but sometimes, I have some doubts about the people who try to make it runs fine. ::)
-
RL...

HOT WEATHER IN RL
Yesterday night, (as always) I was in SL when suddenly, strange green things appeared all over the screen. Even impossible to normally stop the computer. After rebooting, with everything cold, black screen when trying to enter Windows. So sad, I was so proud of my GeForce 4 Ti 4600 128 MB (a bomb in ... 2002), bought on eBay, 4 years ago, to a girl from Michigan.
But at that time I could do nothing: beachvolley (Austriala-Austria) was starting on the TV. :D
This morning, my old card (similar, Ti 4200 64 Mb, same drivers) is back in my computer. All is working fine again. No great difference. In the past it was overclocked but I guess I will wait for the wintertime...
(oh, and about beachvolley, a little disappointing)
-
eBooks
The real title of this post is:
How my f.....g ADSL provider let me during 16 hours without internet, while the hotline was saying "this number doesn't exist"!?
But that's another (true) story...
Because of this "incident", I'm happy, I found a new use for my netbook:
1. Going in SL if my main computer is out of order. Believe it or not, it works perfectly for me. Ok.
2. Turning the netbook into a portable TV. Very good idea. Ok.
3. And now, turning it into an eBook reader. What? Read a book? What a primitive invention! The only things I read nowadays are provided by Google (and I'm sincerely ashamed of that). Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are the new Gutenbergs.
Yesterday I have read a book on my netbook (while laying on bed). That's great!!
Oh, and about beachvolley, very nice morning today. Germany vs. Germany. Sunny weather, "normal" outfits, beautiful girls.
(BTW Germany won) :P
-
This is a spam from Real Life:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/12/national-french-fry-day-healthy_n_1669717.html (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/12/national-french-fry-day-healthy_n_1669717.html)
-
I think I will wait the weather goes back to "normal" temperatures and buy another Ti 4600. Great choice on the US ebay (sometimes shipping to Europe is more expensive than the card!). We can even find brand news cards inside their original box.
My GF Ti 4200 64 MB works fine in SL but my late 4600 128 MB was sooo fantastic! I need an AGP card. I guess other good cards exist, better than the 4600, but I don't want to change my power supply, too.
Of course if my old PC doesn't invent a new problem before...
(I know, you think you're reading a post from 2002, but don't worry, you are in 2012!)
-
MESH
Instead of buying an obsolete card for an obsolete PC, I know, better to buy a new computer (as always just a stupid question of money). But not a basic computer with the minimum requirements, a true (expensive) computer for the SL of 2012. I'd like to know, at least once, how it looks like. With a modern viewer (SL3 or Firestorm). An maybe I'd watch my own characters with a new eye.
It seems the most important word in SL viewers is "mesh" (at least for characters). I don't try to understand this magic word. A word for experts, not a word for fun. As always I'm lazy. In SL like in RL, I'm very selective, I only learn words that can bring me fun. Yes I'm very lazy.
I must admit with my old viewer v.1, I often meet (more and more) odd characters in SL. No feet, two boxes instead of hands, another box on the head, strange body, many strange things. Sorry, no reason to say hi and start a friendly relationship (a beautiful avatar is the first thing we notice in SL, like in RL). Maybe after all, people see me like that too, with their viewer. I'm afraid I'll be very disappointed by this "new" SL.
But before that, I absolutely must learn what mesh means... ;D
-
GT is thinking about a new computer?
Data falls of chair, picks himself up and types the following.
Make sure you get a 256bit graphics card, the cheapest you can find will be good enough for SL, could be ATI (AMD) or Nvidia.
And really you want a quad core CPU with a minimum of 4 GIG RAM in the box.
-
Sorry Data, and many thanks for your advice. I think I got a short brain issue. I guess I was under the influence of Lotto. 200 millions euros to win yesterday night. I was planning to buy Linden Lab, they have good computers for SL there.
I saw the results this morning: nobody won. Fortunately. I love my Pentium 4 and my netbook sooo much. :)
(and about the Ferrari, no hurry)
-
MESH, again...
Hi, you know what? Yesterday night, I met a girl in SL (I know, nothing new). In her profile, on the 1st tab, she wrote:
"IF YOU WEAR MESH PLEASE KEEP IN MIND I CAN'T SEE IT ON VIEWER".
It seems we both have the same problem: an old viewer. The fact is she looked good and "normal" to me (the rest is private).
(then I watched beachvolley on my TV, USA vs. USA, perfect show, no mesh in London)
-
Ultimate news from the olympics.

2008 METAVERSE TOUR
And now my touch of nostalgia (I really need it, I discovered SL lately, in 2008):
2008 METAVERSE TOUR - THE SOCIAL VIRTUAL WORLD'S A STAGE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CijdlYOSPc#)
Many virtual worlds are gone, some others appeared (a film from 2008, maybe the golden age of metaverse) :)
-
Two weeks, four major "incidents".
1. my beloved graphics card suddenly died in SL (very hot weather in RL)
2. then a provider failure, no ADSL during 16 hours (no explanation)
3. two days ago, impossible to access "my" region in SL (short issue, I mean 24 hours)
4. and also the "traffic bug" lasting for one month, affecting lots of club and shop owners.
I wonder why the thing that always works fine in SL, every month, is the payment system... ::)
-
Incredible!! Yesterday, for the first time, LL wrote on the dedicated JIRA and said there is an issue in the traffic calculation. And they will fix the problem very soon (in fact they are searching a solution for ONE MONTH...).
Today a little improvement (I must admit) but not perfect. Wait and see, Maybe it's worth it... :)
(BTW the reply was sent by... CommerceTeam Linden)
-
The traffic bug seems fixed. Values are back to normal.
But we must stay aware, before saying thank you LL...
Now just a few words about the SL netiquette:
-
MESH (The End)
Tons of educational videos on YouTube.
Rigging in blender tutorial for second life mesh avatars - part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JHWDdrIeD0#)
Hot hot hot weather in RL. Hey, I hope you understand why I will never learn the word "mesh". Better to watch "normal" characters.
How to spend Spring Break 2012 in Second Life! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxjSi-LJUY4#ws)
(of course except the guys in the beachvolley action...) ;)
-
A Year in the Life - Second Life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgNcTxgCMLQ#ws)
Nice movie but of course, YOUR own Second Life (and your appearance) is always much more better.
That depends of you, only you. Just do it!!
-
When I watch this thread, supposed to be a spam from SL, I wonder why this poor GT40 is unable to afford a modern PC. ;D
-
PC? Hey stupid, as always I guess you mean a Macintosh? :idiot2:
-
PC, Macintosh, Lady and Gentleman, the problem is more complicated, very complicated. ::)
-
Maybe Mac users look sophisticated people but, at least, they are generous. The next links are available for your damn PC, too.
http://www.blakopal.com/mac/ (http://www.blakopal.com/mac/)
http://www.mediabaron.com/SL/prefs/ (http://www.mediabaron.com/SL/prefs/)
Always so happy to help. ;D
-
Ha Ha Ha !!! >:( :( :o
-
Sorry wonderful people, busy, reading the links. I don't know what to think... ::)
-
Hi GT, about your mesh problem, I hope this thread could be useful to you:
http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Viewers/Mesh-vs-non-Mesh-viewers/qaq-p/1288883 (http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Viewers/Mesh-vs-non-Mesh-viewers/qaq-p/1288883)
Article from 2011, but I think the situation is much more worse now.
-
Many thanks Fulltime. Yes, I really need to
1. change my computer and graphics card
2. install on it a recent viewer
But I guess I can still wait for 1 or 2 years, if I choose my partners very carefully. ;)
-
Ooooh, too too hot weather in RL. Time to definitely go back to SL. They have air conditioning there. 8)
Of course I'm not the owner of this thread. So anyone is free to continue to post.
Data and Claude, the only SLers of AI Dreams.
Freddy the boss who tolerates such a stupid topic on his forum (thanks again Freddy).
Fulltime and Golden, my alts in RL.
Bye all, and apologizes to the few anonymous people who clicked the link by accident. :)
-
And now, I guess I'm supposed to cry!? ;D
-
I'm so happy. I thought it would never finish. :D
-
Hey Fulltime! Were you related to Steve?
(little humor)
OK...you thought WHAT would never finish?? SL or RL?
Always, be yourself! O0
-
Hello Art, I'm happy because, as you can read on the previous page, GT40 has decided to stop his stupid topic (yes, it's obviously a stupid idea to explain SL on a AI forum).
Thanks Art, I try to be myself, but it's not easy for Steve Jobs' son (the hidden one). :-[
-
My uncle Bill agrees. GT40 is VERY stupid. ;D
-
Oh GT, I thought you would keep this thread going for at least another 2 years or until you get that new computer ( Mac or PC ) that you have dreams about. 8)
Seriously, there is no reason to stop, I mean who will Diesel and me be able to tease if you do. ;)
And I know that Freddy doesn’t mind the thread. :)
Reconsider? Maybe?

Come on GT...Even if some of us don't believe in SL, we do enjoy reading your excerpts and quips about it.
If YOU believe it's real then it IS real (to you) and if you'd rather live there then I'm sure something could
be worked out along a quantum physics level to accomplish that.
Just stick with one persona / avatar as it's far too confusing for the rest of us to keep up!
You go guy!!
@ Fulltime - sorry for your recent loss!
-
Thank you guys, I think I was in a bad day. Today, always a hot weather in RL but glad rain is back (just a little).
Many thanks Data, about your fondation "A new computer for GT40", a very generous idea. I'm not sure I really need (or want) it. Everyday I find a new reason to keep the old one, and to add a new feature to my RL (and the mesh thing isn't really annoying).
Art, it's impossible to report the fun I have in SL, that's a very personal and private and secret affair, but no doubt, I enjoy SL. The only way for everyone to appreciate it (or not) is to go inside and try it. It's a good way to try to forget the bad things of RL. Not always possible, but some days it can help.
I will send a little hello from time to time. I must read the stupidities written by Fulltime and Golden. They are totally out of control (not like my characters in SL, who always fully obey me). :)
-
Please don't tell me the show must go on?? :idiot2:
-
No. The show must go home. ;D
-
Netbooks are amazing
I know you can't believe my netbook works fine in (my) SL.
I love netbooks. As you can see, they are better than tablets.
Netbook (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pT6UTo-RAXM#)
(I know I wrote "I will send a little hello from time to time", but I think this video is very important for humanity)
-
That was sooo funny and well done!! Made me laugh out loud, it did! Thanks for the chuckle!!! :2funny:
-
It booted so quick for a Netbook, must have an SSD in it.
Good vid GT O0
-
Yeah interesting and very cleverly done, not seen anything like that before. I like the way it was done with pencil. Good find O0
-
I'm happy, that's incredible (at least to me)!! I knew that Phoenix and the Cool VL Viewer had a mesh capable version (about Phoenix: 1.6.1.1691), but I thought my antique PC and its old graphics card were unable to run them correctly (like for the Viewer 3 or Firestorm). I tried them and I saw I was wrong, it works! Wow, my 10/11 y.o. computer isn't that ridiculous and obsolete object anymore! ;)
I went to my favorite (and always very crowded) place, where many lovely creatures look like monsters, if watched in the old viewer 1. Now they are "normal"!!
The only inconvenience of Phoenix and the Cool VL Viewer is I can't see my movies (maybe because both are based on the old Snowglobe, I don't know) but no problem, I can watch the clips on my netbook running the viewer 1 (simply the best for movies) at the same time, in the same room.
Maybe one day or another, I will explain you the fun I have to launch an alt on the netbook, that will "play" with some characters of the desktop, but that's a too private affair...
Ok, next step, I must buy on eBay another GeForce 4600 (128), recently killed during the heat wave, and replace the current 4200 (64). A new computer just for SL? No thanks. Unless LL invents another stupid mesh idea. ;D
-
It's like a revival. I was incredibly happy in "MY" SL but the fact I couldn't see the mesh characters correctly was more and more annoying.
I tried Phoenix 1.5 in the past (the non-mesh capable version... because it was before LL introduces mesh graphics in SL, lol). I quickly abandoned it because of the movies problem. Now I use Phoenix 1.6...
Now mesh is everywhere in SL and I hope people with very powerful machines can enjoy the difference. Or maybe it's only a marketing trick... ::)
-
I have read a lot about mesh before I find a solution. In exemple, this topic:
http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2011/05/3d-mesh-coming-to-second-life-august-2011.html (http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2011/05/3d-mesh-coming-to-second-life-august-2011.html)
At a moment I found this very interesting post (please search and read the whole content):
Dont make me laugh when you say you connect with a 4 year old computer or a laptop!
For having the best sex one has to have the top notch in desktop nowdays, and most have it!
So want all need to understand for once and for all!
Sl is not a game.
Sl is not for kids.
Sl is not for the poor.
Sl is not for the masses.
Of course I disagree (except about the fact SL isn't a game). You know I run SL with a 10 y.o. desktop and a netbook (yes I'm poor). And everyday both bring me some incredible sex moments in "my" SL. And I can say I'm proud that so many yummy residents visit my places and have fun with their sooo sophisticated top machines. ;D
-
Finally I don't know if I'm poor or stingy. Maybe just happy with the things I have...
I know it would be great to own a top computer, able to run the last official viewer v3 or Firestorm in full settings. Ok, no doubt it'd be more comfortable. But the big problem is I can't be really sure I will have more fun with it!
Please don't laugh at me. I only hope my old computer will last 10 years more, before it becomes totally OB-SO-LE-TE. :o
-
I can confirm GT40 is poor :)
-
and stingy. >:(
-
In the case you never entered SL (is it possible?), some older and recent login screens (aka "splash screens"):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/danielvoyager/sets/72157627214683187/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/danielvoyager/sets/72157627214683187/)
Just do it! :)
-
Ah, another major reason to laugh at me (you know I don't mind)! :2funny:
I just ordered on eBay another Ti 4600 (26.99 USD, total less than 30 euros with shipping from NY). I hope it will work and another issue will not happen soon. My technical skills are limited (changing a graphics card or a hard drive is ok, but not the entire motherboard).
eBay says this card is refurbished from a Dell 4N458. The funny thing is when I searched this Dell on Google, I found several dizains of pages about the card but NOTHING about the computer.
Sure this card is (was?) a star. The best one for a computer from 2002.
(maybe I'd try the Guinness Book and become a star too). ::)
-
OH GT, your logic is the oddest I have even encountered.
I mean why didn’t you get a better AGP card, like one that has pixel shader 3 on, would make SL look nicer. The Ti 4600 only supports pixel shader 1 not even 2.
A quick look on Amazon and I found this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/PNY-nVIDIA-6200AGP8x-350MHz-Graphics/dp/B002RRIKC4/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1346861382&sr=1-1 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/PNY-nVIDIA-6200AGP8x-350MHz-Graphics/dp/B002RRIKC4/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1346861382&sr=1-1)
Product Description
Get world-class performance and features with the NVIDIA GeForce 6200. The only GPU in its class with support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3.0, the GeForce 6200 GPU provides the power enabling ultra-realistic characters, environments, and special effects-without compromising performance-for an incredible PC experience.
-
Hi Data, strange logic, not sure... ;)
1. All the 6200's get a score of around 20 in the Video Card Stability Test (80 for the 4600).
2. Another reason is I don't know the power supply (mine isn't very good) required by a card I don't know (we rarely know that). So I'm sure the current one is enough for the 4600 and it will not fail in SL.
3. And now the true reason: I don't worry too much how SL looks with good cards, I only worry about "MY" SL. And I'm sure my SL (the only one interesting for me, lol) is PERFECT with a 4600. O0
But thanks Data for your information.
-
GT,
Changing out a motherboard really is not difficult, just a little more time consuming. There are a few plugs to deal with but the overall experience becomes much less daunting after you finally tackle your first one! Just unplug everything and start pulling cards!!! Pick a card...any card!! Whoops...wrong trick!!
-
Thank you Art for your explanations. It seems easy, said by you. Maybe if I could fight against my laziness, my lack of patience and cleverness, I'd able to do that...
But hey, it means, if I totally rebuild my prehistoric PC from 2002, I will never know how a modern computer looks! :)
-
Be careful if you are thinking of changing the motherboard GT.
The new boards don’t have Legacy IDE on them any more, its all SATA now, so you would also need to get a new HDD and DVD drive.
You would also need a new power supply to connect to the motherboard because they have change the connector too.
The good news is that you don’t really need to get a graphics card anymore, just get an Intel i3 or i5 CPU, they have good graphics built into the CPU.
So what does GT need?

Thank you so much Data. A lot of very interesting and useful informations for "normal" people.
In my case, all is very complicated because not only I have a very old PC, but it's a small Shuttle. So of course I will never try to replace the motherboard.
But be sure one day or another, I will buy a new computer (with Windows 10?). And at this moment, your post will certainly influence me. If I win the Lotto. :)
Thanks again Data.

Maybe a SL addict group?

PROBLEM?
Hi everyone!
You know I go in SL with a 10 y.o. PC. But I do understand that simple visitors (I mean "spectators") need the best of the best (computer, graphics card and viewer) to totally enjoy all the wonders of SL.
So I'm supposed to have a gray, blurred, laggy, horrible vision of SL. Not at all, my SL looks GREAT!! That's the "problem".
The thing I call "MY SL" is the little paradise I have carefully built for 4 years in Zindra (the adult continent). Cozy places (public or secret), alts (so the avatars I need are always available, lol), beautiful friends and group members. I mean, the kingdom I can't have in RL.
Of course, all that isn't free. Every month LL takes me some euros. For me it's worth it. Fortunately I consider the ratio price/fun is very reasonable, maybe because SL is my only vice. So no reason for now to waste money to improve the hardware (till the unavoidable final crash) because my SL is really perfect to me.
I can affirm that my SL works fine and looks good on my old desktop (with Phoenix, to see mesh graphics) and in the same way on my netbook (with the viewer one, to see SL movies). I often use both at the same time. More and more fun and experiments and surprises with two computers running SL (except the fact now I need twenty fingers). No limit to imagination and dreams. Tomorrow is another day...
As you can see, everyday I wonder why I'm so happy in SL with such low-end computers... Any idea? ;D
-
Gt40, I have the power to tell you, you're in luck. My main rule is the dosing program. Since a lot of adventure with computers. Should never neglected, capabilities, computer, and checked, contained heavy. This is important, it avoids the crash, slow, and many symptoms that occur during the use of a 3D program.
This is the first rule.
My father has a computer with a memory, unlimited, and enough novice because it has been, programs, very heavy, and it is the artistic painting.
Then he had transferred all these works, in a folder, but in large quantities, and the result fatal, his computer froze, memory was in the red.
I understood how the measured memory, especially with iClone, it is very important for the longevity of the computer.
It is often necessary, monitoring, reporting, content in the preface, the computer, and see, margin, occupied and unoccupied. This is the first point. For myself, I reallusion, and it is impossible to take another program, voluminous, I work with iClone, because I love it.
This is true, and I joined your passion with one universe, magical and majestic.
All success to you Gt40, friendships. O0
-
Thank you Claude. Of course I was kidding, it wasn't a true question, just a little joke. I do know exactly why "my SL" looks so good on my prehistoric desktop and on my netbook. No mystery in this personal story, so who could be interested...
I'm sure that many people have a computer worse than mine (ok I know, perhaps more recent, lol), and a lot of them are totally unable to go in SL.
You're right, I'm lucky, lucky my old PC had no major failure since 2002 (2 graphics cards and 1 power supply, that's all folks). One day or another I'll have to change it but for now it's not the priority and I have no reason to do that. RL before. Ah if only "my RL" were like "my SL"...
I understand why iClone is your cup of tea, your passion, you are THE expert here and I'm sure you have a fun similar to the one I have with SL. I remember in the past, I wrote I was addicted to Haptek, lol. Another time, another addiction...
Thanks again Claude, cheers. ;)

Gt40, when I had my XP, it was a treat to play with SecondLife, I had many friends have is getting a lot of friends in Sl. Unfortunately, the loss of my XP. But, Sl, is not only magic, people have an identity, and it's like a tranfer of life to another, so the people, remains themselves, but the difference is that everything is magical. Haptek I have always maintained, all work on disk, it is always present, but evolution by many to the application, it joined the theme that I mentioned lately. ;)
-
Yes Claude, SL is magic and you're right, even if we have a totally different appearance than the one we have in RL (fortunately), most of us stay the same in SL.
Despite the roleplay (or because of the roleplay), I think the sense of humor is even better in SL (SL conversations don't lie).
Ah yes, except when (seldom) we meet a stupid resident, but no worries, who would to be friend with him/her... :)
-
(and now the very technical minute by GT40)
Why "MY SL" looks sooo good to me...
1. Because my SL is "MY" SL (the true technical reason).
2. Counting... I have created 5 specific places for fun, 3 public (all available in the Search engine) and 2 very private. Most of them are closed skyboxes. In a closed skybox, nothing to know and see about the outside. Nothing about water, ground, sky, clouds, nothing about the landscape. People don't go there to enjoy a landscape... The decoration on the walls is mainly made of pics, slideshows, animated images and of course of quicktime movies. I don't think the result would look greater with a better card (but maybe I'm wrong).
3. The draw distance, ah the draw distance, so important for the framerate. Because all these places are very cozy, I reduced the draw distance to... 32 meters (possible in the advanced menu). There is nothing interesting beyond the walls, and everything inside looks and works fine.
4. Since the first day, I use the same viewer, the first official viewer (then called viewer 1 when viewer 2 appeared, lol). Phoenix is very similar, because based on the old Snow Globe. I had to use Phoenix since LL introduced mesh graphics in SL (not sure it's a great idea, but nothing to do to stop that now).
5. Sorry if I was speaking of "MY" SL, not of SL. But everyday many SLers tell me that my SL look great to their so powerful computers (from 2012, not from 2002), too. Thank you people of SL. :)
-
I guess what you have never had you don’t notice when it isn't there.
Hi resolution (1920 x 1080) minimum.
No jaggy edges
Modern lighting
Pixel shadder 3
It all adds to making a more realistic SL doesn’t it GT?
-
Thank you Data for your nice postcard from Paris. I hope you don't mind (and if I hurt you, I sincerely apologize), but "MY SL" looks much more better than this sophisticated pic. Really.
The fun I had with my partners yesterday night (another amazing experiment) was incredible. Of course we were not on the top of the Eiffel Tower but in a more adequate place, my place.
My problem is, as always, I can't prove it. I guess Freddy doesn't wish to host porn pics on his site. Me either, that's a very private affair... ;)
-
Haaaaa!! This morning my Ti 4600 was inside my letterbox!!
Oooooh!! This afternoon my Ti 4200 is back inside my computer!!
This 4600 works fine (with sometimes big blue lines on the screen) until I try to launch something...
I lost... well, 30 euros. I hope I will survive. :-[
-
Hi GT, I know it's not like me but I have censored your image with the naughty F-word. I like to keep things family friendly here and I know others do too. Yes we are mostly grown ups posting but we have to be responsible with what we post. This is not a lecture though ;)
I hope you understand my friend ::)
-
No worries Freddy. I understand, I will avoid in the future to send posts containing this word. You're right, no need to use vulgarity to try to look funny (too easy). :o
And thanks again my friend, to host on your site this ridiculous thread that is a total nonsense, in this so serious world of AI Dreamers. ;)
-
Oops sorry guys, I forgot to say bye (I know, not the first time I say bye). Usually I'm a very polite person in SL.
Ashamed you have seen I'm very slow. It took me 24 pages to understand that SL isn't "MY SL". Sorry I lost my and your time to try to explain why I feel so good in SL, with a such a ridiculous machine (kidding, of course I looove my Pentium 4). But at least it was fun to me. I must admit I'm very proud of ""MY SL"... O0
No problem, it's just a "bye for now". Sure I will come back soon, maybe in 2015 or 2018, with a new computer. I'm afraid I will be very disappointed. No doubt SL will look much more better, but no reason "MY SL" will be improved. It's already PERFECT. :)
POOF!
-
If I may, I would like to slot in a couple of vids explaining how to survive in SL.
Might come in handy to anyone new to SL and who reads this thread.

Ha, glad that stupid GT is really gone! :)
Finally something interesting in this thread...
-
Yes Data, funny vids, very well done. Thanks. ;)
-
I hope everyone is in SL now, not in the Bermuda Triangle. ;)
-
Oh my, incredible, I heard GT40 made a major change to his computer!!
-
Yes, a true event for SLers, I think he bought a new mouse.
-
;D
-
Data wonders if GT’s new mouse looks anything like this.
-
I don't know. I have a non-mesh viewer when I'm on Ai Dreams. ::)
-
Very cute, Data.
I guess that's one way to get a little tail! :2funny:
-
GT40, I know that you are a specialist SL. I remade a new account. Because SL had deleted my old account. Now I can use SL in all its capacities. But I lost all my old inventory alas. I research, Ao (Oversides) of skin for male surtourtout of ao. I find, instead Freebie fantastic with stuff, very interesting, unfortunately I lost the links because they were recorded in my old account. If you have, instead of free, you know, I Thank You. Claude friendships. O0
-
I dropped SL, because of the impossibility with my other Vista computer. So I left SL since 2010.
-
(hey Claude, I wasn't supposed to come back, "no news good news" is one of my favorite mottos) :D
But after all, many thanks Claude, glad you reactivated this thread. No doubt now you are the boss of the SLers at AI Dreams, the one with the best computer!
Maybe you know that a big change happened in SL in 2011, because every resident now needs to use a mesh-capable viewer if he/she doesn't want to miss something. And of course, a true computer, not a dinosaur like mine, is required (but it's not a big problem with Singularity, the best mesh viewer for low-end machines).
About your inventory problem, I guess you will find all you wish with Search. It seems we have more and more shops in SL (I'm not really sure, I have read tons of posts from shop owners complaining about the mesh revolution). Despite some goodies disappeared (if you remember the fantastic Sarah Nerd freebies store... poof...). With the right keywords, I'm sure you will get anything you need (for free or not).
Good luck Claude and thanks again. ;)
-
Gt40 thank you. I'll get it. I love the music in sl. There is a lot of change, and worlds that I do not know. lol this is so funny to come again in SL. Thank you very much. ;)
-
Gt40, maintenance during this time my new account does not fit, but just the service. :-\///////////////
Scheduled JIRA Maintenance
[Posted 3:02pm PDT, 19 October 2012] There will be scheduled maintenance on the JIRA Bug Tracker from approximately 9:00pm PDT on Monday, October 22, 2012 until 3:00am PDT on Tuesday October 23, 2012. The JIRA system will not be available during those times.
-
Don't worry Claude. No influence on your SL. Like you I check the grid status reports everyday. We hope Linden Lab will fix or improve something. But never sure... Recently, it took one month to LL to admit there was a bug in the traffic calculation, before they opened a JIRA thread. One month to come back to the usual values! A shame, so many people need them and pay for that. >:(
-
Gt40, yes it's true. I'm newbie, just to do not be scammed. It is not very serious, no worries. :) O0
-
Gt40, yes you are right, Sl work again, and I have a new friend I had, the gift, very nice for my avatar, it's great! O0
-
Claude, I'm glad you enjoy your comeback in SL (and now in the best conditions!!).
Yes, everyday brings a new joy that can help to forget (if possible) the negative events of RL. :)
-
gt40, I resumed technical terms. I find the term 'Override' motion for AO, I find, in 2010, a place, fantastic management with selective motion AO, in behavior, and dance. But since 2010, the Market place, erased, lots of room, containing the component, interesting, I'm not subscribed to the virtual, but it is nice to have more autonomy in the motions, and look . ;)
-
Learning in my consultation for motion. Motions are created, mostly by, Mocap. Since then, other companies, such as silversteen without me wrong, have similar production of Mocap, fluidity of motion, ECCT. There is an encoder for motion, naturally paying. This work, by a server, or it goes into purchasing the place of sale, it is a virtual software, embedded on the screen SL, and you can call, your motion directly. Have found the principle reallusion, Iclone4, 5, for selectivity, and the creation of motions. I Mocap software, but it work in reality, only for iClone. According to this thesis, another program, virtual interface, designed for SL only.
-
Hi Claude, I'm not an expert in motion like you with iClone. But if you do a Search in SL with the keyword "Mocap" (don't forget to click the 3 options PG, Mature, Adult), you will find several shops selling their products.
Since my first day in SL, I bought a lot of animations for my characters and places at Abranimations. You're right, this place often disappeared but they sell so realistic animations there. Essential for everyone!
(BTW I have never bought anything at the Market Place, maybe I'm too old, I prefer traditional shops) 8)
-
gt40, yes, it's true. The MarketPlace exists, since some time. I am not a specialist, guidance, SL, but in the old bases, it is true that the purchase or freebies, was easily found. Now, SL, became a point shop, so certain link freebies are gone. I just want some entertainment, which can be more autonomous, the respect, ball animation. To dance with my old account, I had several overrider. But they left with my old account. :-\ :)
-
Yes Claude, and also I noticed that, sometimes if something in a specific script doesn't work anymore, it's impossible to replace the object. Poof, totally disappeared from SL... And also some of my houses, really beautiful... but they don't exist anymore anywhere on the market... >:(
-
Yesterday I was ready to buy at my favorite supermarket a tiny good-looking basic PC (graphics chip on board, no Intel inside), to try to improve my mesh experience.
When I read this amazing topic:
http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Viewers/problem-with-mesh-viewers/qaq-p/1574653 (http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Viewers/problem-with-mesh-viewers/qaq-p/1574653)
I think I will wait a while. No doubt my 10 y.o. (11 soon) Pentium 4 and my beloved netbook work a lot better. ;) :D
-
Good news, bad news..
The bad new: it seems my dear dinosaur isn't feeling good. :(
Yesterday I was restoring the system to a previous date and at the end, the hard-drive refused to stop. In fact, after starting, the PC can reach the Windows desktop. Then the HD continues to spin. (of course a HD always spins, but I mean its light is on). I can't launch nothing. Maybe the HD passed away. Maybe there is an error somewhere...
The good new: yesterday I have tested a mesh viewer named Catznip. FANTASTIC!! Today I installed Catznip on my netbook (now my only PC).
Everyone here has a Formula One (Claude is in Pole Position, lol) and can run the viewer3 or Firestorm without any problem.
For others, try Catznip. It's fast like an ordinary viewer and it works fine on my netbook. Thank you GT40. O0 ;D
-
Hi GT, I did like the joke about Claude being in pole position in F1 ;D
Sorry to hear about the old P4 :(
It could be that the restore point didn't quite finish as it should have.
Try booting in to safe mode by pressing F8 as your computer boots up, then if it does, do a system restore from safe mode, but try using another restore point, maybe the restore point you were using was bad.
Maybe, hopefully :)
-
Everyone here has a Formula One (Claude is in Pole Position, lol)
Yeah Claude suddenly passed everyone and took the lead ;D
-
Oh my, Data, now you really are my guru forever!! You saved my dear old PC (for many personal reasons, you can't imagine what that thing means to me, not only a question of money, thanks again). :D
I did exactly what you explained (very well, many thanks for your time) and suddenly... the miracle!! And also you saved my eyes and my back (not very comfortable to stay in SL with a netbook)!
Thanks Data, eternal thanks... Sincerely. :) O0 8)
-
@GT40 - Of course you ARE taking this as an OMEN of things to come! You NEED to absolutely MAKE A BACKUP of the things you either want, need or both BEFORE IT DIES FOREVER!! It is only a question of WHEN! Unfortunately it's just like humans...it will die...we just don't know when! Backup...Backup!!!
Oh...and good luck!! O0
-
Have to agree with Art there, backup your important bits O0
I'm happy to help and happy it worked for you GT, would have been a very sad day if your old computer was dead, how could we make jokes about it?
Yeah, I remember that one about system restore in XP, sometimes it can go bad and has to be done again from safe mode.
You are Sincerely welcome GT :)
-
Yes you're right Art and Data. Not so serious and sad than to lose a person. :( But just annoying, very annoying...
I remember I have many shoeboxes full of CD's from my W98 era... somewhere. I'm sure I will discover lots of jewels inside, if I take the time to search them.
Nowadays I'm lazy. I regularly save the files that are really important to me, on a flashdrive permanently plugged in the back of the computer. I'm not sure if this method is reliable. Sometimes I check if nothing has been deleted.
(BTW thanks again Data, I love my old computer more and more) ;)
-
I just took one of my older but still good computers and installed the latest version of Ubuntu along side of Windows and I must say, the new Ubuntu Rocks!! It just works!!! Finds everything, connects, updates offers Office-like programs and tons of Free software! Fully customizable and as secure as one wishes to make it! Simple, easy-to-use GUI and oh yes...it's FREE and always will be!! I like what I'm seeing so far but I'm going to give it a fair bit of time, putting it through the paces before putting my "stamp of approval" on it!!
This session is from said machine and the installed version of Mozilla Firefox!
-
Many thanks for the info, Art, I always thought that Linux was the OS of geeks. ;)
I'm afraid that ordinary people like me prefer to stay with Windows.
But no doubt there is at least ONE reason to switch: I was told that SL runs like a charm on Linux. O0
-
Yes, remember the words from above "...Simple, easy-to-use GUI".
IT looks like a modified windows desktop. Icons for various apps, etc. Choice of backgrounds, savers, themes, etc. Navigates with mouse and no need to know "geek-like" commands. It just works and it works fast!
Load it along side your existing Windows OS and the two can / will co-exist in the same machine. You don't have to delete one for the other. When booting, you decide which OS you'd like to run for that session. Simple!
-
You're a very good clever salesman Art, even if the thing is free. All that looks so easy. You convinced me. 8)
But just about SL, I guess it's important to read (before) the problems that some residents might encounter.
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linux_Viewer#System_Requirements (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linux_Viewer#System_Requirements)
For other purposes, I'm sure your enthusiasm is justified. Thanks. O0
-
You are given the option to select either the 32 bit or 64 bit version Before downloading.
I know it's probably not for everyone but people should at least give it a look, especially those
concerned with privacy, virus attacks, cost, behavior and customization. Otherwise, keep doing
the MS upgrade shuffle and hand over some more $$$'s. :knuppel2: ;)
-
Gt40, here is a panel of hundreds of services, similar, more or less, secondlife. :)
-
Many thanks Claude. I only tested the thing named "Second Life".
Very good... 8) O0 :D ;)
-
I tested the gt40 virtual world created by IBM. The avatar are very realistic, but little known, for the moment. ;)
-
Hi everyone!! Christmas soon but no, I don't plan to change my prehistoric PC (thanks again Data, I don't forget you saved it when I thought it was the end). :)
And I know this isn't politically correct to say, but I must admit I have a lot of fun with my netbook in SL. I'm doing many experiments (I never tried Ubuntu but it's obviously a future option). And, very strange, some features run with the Atom when they don't want to work with the Pentium 4! In fact, most of the time, I use both, with two different avatars running at the same time.
Despite all the "ayatollas" we have on SL forums ("nothing else but the best of the best for SL!"), sometimes (often) it's so good to encounter people who are happy with what they have, even netbooks.
Like this person:

Don't worry, I don't want to convert you to netbooks. Just a little hello. 8)

Some months ago, this thing was my ultimate dream:
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptop/asus-eee-pc-1215n.aspx (http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptop/asus-eee-pc-1215n.aspx)
Fortunately, despite these stupid tablets, I hope 2013 (if the end of the world doesn't come before) will be a great year (oops again?) for netbooks and subnotebooks.

(I love this one a lot, a very good choice for SL. The price, what price? It's a dream... As always, I have no money) ::)
-
I had my eye on one of the Asus machines too they look very good to me. A bit of a pipe dream for me as I don't actually need it, it's only the gadget freak in me that wants it ;D
-
I like netbooks and tablets but, yes there is a but you knew there would be ;D
The screens are too small, when you are used to having a 37 incher then a 10 inch just wont do.
Just another one of my silly little quirks :D
-
You're right Data. More toys or jewels than computers...
You're right Freddy. No (real) life without dreams and gadgets...
:)
-
Does SL work on tablets ?
My phone is great for keeping up with things when I am away from home, but I couldn't use a small screen full time either.
-
This little tablet could SL nicely, it has an i5 CPU with Intel HD 3000 graphics.
But cost something like £1000 :o

London is an amazing city (in RL and in SL). 8)

Whatever the hardware you have (believe it or not, I'm happy with mine) you can find all you need on SL forums, and improve your SL "experience", even with a low-end computer.
http://community.secondlife.com/t5/General-Discussion-Forum/Computer-Resources-and-3rd-Party-Viewers/td-p/1373821 (http://community.secondlife.com/t5/General-Discussion-Forum/Computer-Resources-and-3rd-Party-Viewers/td-p/1373821)
Interesting posts about Singularity, CoolViewer, Viewer 3, mesh and non-mesh viewers, and other things... 8)
-
Of course nobody here worries about mesh-viewers. The very few members of AiDreams still going in SL have top machines for top gamers (far away from the average SLer, no problem, I'm not jealous LOL). ;)
http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Viewer/Mesh-Viewer-horrible-framerate/td-p/1205631 (http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Viewer/Mesh-Viewer-horrible-framerate/td-p/1205631)
It was the time of early mesh-viewers. It seems nothing really changed... ::)
-
One minute you have a great card the next minute it's history ;D
-
I don't know what to think... :(
-
I mean for everyone...we buy the newest hardware and in a short time it becomes out of date... :)
-
My tip would be to always get good mid range spec components and don't ever go for the best there is, in less than 18 months a new good mid range PC would be quicker than the hi end PC you got 18 months ago. ;)
-
I can never afford the top of the range, mid range is more my game. ;)
-
Good point, that's what I was trying to say In a nutshell ;D
-
Hey guys, I think you both have a very bad influence on me. ;)
Some months ago, because of you (and also some other SL forumers), I thought it was impossible to have a good SL experience without a very good machine. So I visited the web and my local stores, trying to find THE decent computer, for a reasonable price. During several weeks.
... when I suddenly realized I was stupid, I needed NOTHING. My SL is perfect for me, even with the recent mesh "problem". :o
Or maybe the day my antique desktop will die. But only 11 year, I see no reason. ;D
No hard feelings. :)
-
Actually, it's a bit worse than they're telling you.
You but the ultimate, latest, greatest, hi-end computer you can find with all those bells and whistles!
Once you get it home, unbox, set it up, turn it on, IT'S ALREADY OUTDATED!!
When you buy the newest one from the store, there's it's replacement leaving the factory on it's
way to a store near you.
It's just the way things are.
I'll never forget many years ago I was a a friend's house and asked him when he was going to let
loose some of his "hoarded" money and buy a computer.
His reply was classic, "I'll buy one once they get it right!" (he most likely STILL doesn't have one)!!
but think of the money he's saved...;)
-
Don't worry GT, I will be behind you every step of the way, together we will keep that P4 going and get you into the record books, it has now become one of my goals in life :)
-
Oooh thank you so much Data. I'm so proud to appear in the Guinness book soon. O0
And thanks for your long explanation, Art. The true story of computers (is that what they call Moore's law?), by a wise man. I thought I was stingy, but I'm just normal. Thank you.
Buying a new computer just to go on Google, YouTube and Second Life isn't a good idea (and I hope Google doesn't plan to buy SL soon).
BTW you have a very intelligent friend. 8)
-
Maybe my old PC (really? 11 years, not so old...) isn't the perfect tool for exploring the very crowded places of SL (containing 40/50 mesh or non-mesh avatars and more). Ok Ok Ok. Maybe.
But according to all the posts I have read on the SL forums (and I have read a lot, and sometimes found THE "tip and trick" improving my SL), it seems that many residents owning a GPU/CPU much better than mine (I mean, everybody in SL, LOL) have a big problem with the mesh "revolution".
http://metaverse-traveller.blogspot.fr/2012/01/second-life-residents-vote-to-ban-none.html (http://metaverse-traveller.blogspot.fr/2012/01/second-life-residents-vote-to-ban-none.html)
Of course I can't say I'm happy, but no doubt (sincerely sorry, dear SLers), I must admit that
IT MAKES ME LAUGH...
(ok, I promise, last post about SL, we are on an AI forum)
-
Gt40, I'm still in the discovery, with Iclone5, and I just observed, the possibility of exporting a character in the format, SecondLife, by Iclone5 is another discovery that I do today. Unbelievable but true, for export. (Wrl) and other formats. The export to Second Life, is reduced, in 2D, with, toon effect. But I do not yet explored this function Iclone5. O0

(I know, I promised...)
Hi Claude, very interesting, I found this old articles:
http://forum.reallusion.com/Topic604-14-1.aspx (http://forum.reallusion.com/Topic604-14-1.aspx)
http://puritansguidetosecondlife.blogspot.fr/2007/07/iclone-great-new-software.html (http://puritansguidetosecondlife.blogspot.fr/2007/07/iclone-great-new-software.html)
Since 2007, many things changed in SL. Now the mesh objects (supposed to improve graphics...) >:(
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mesh/What_is_mesh%3F (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mesh/What_is_mesh%3F)
After Maya, 3DS Max, Blender, now iClone, a perfect field of experimentation for the expert you are.
But hey, sorry Claude, create what you want, but I will not change my avatars! ;D
-
Gt40, technically, it seems quite difficult, transfer, character of SL must be reviewed by the blender. It is possible, but I prefer continued with my characters, without changing anything. I learned new technique for facial animation. I also program CrazyTalk for the face and on the programming, everything is programmable, and resettable with Timeline. So it is possible to do as his motions for SL there a service online, but, subscription, to program the motion in SL. No! Iclone5, not eat, not your character. ;) ::) Gloups! :2funny:
-
LOL Claude, always a question of money. Unless you plan to sell your characters to SLers; the good ones are expensive (the characters, not the SLers). But all that is for fun, SL is fun, only fun (L$ or not).
You're right, don't waste your time, don't change anything. Your movies are so special and so entertaining. O0 O0 O0
-
Thank you very much Gt40 ;) O0

GAME BOOSTER
Despite some bad events that happened in my real life, I have not abandoned Second Life. My secret garden. ;)
I continue to pay Linden Lab for the places I have created. A pity to delete all that. I'm happy to see that many old friends (and new members) still go there. Don't laugh at me, of course my netbook (Windows 7) is less powerful than my antique desktop under XP. But with the low settings I use, it works perfectly for me.
A long time I wanted to try "Game Booster". When you launch the software, you can see a list of the games installed on the PC, SL included (lol, of course SL isn't a game). I'm a little disappointed. The movie playing in every place starts faster. Good, but no real difference in the frame rates. Game Booster is supposed to get rid of everything useless for the game.
Or maybe, before I launched Game Booster, my modest netbook was a model of opmization? :2funny:
Update: today the framerate seems (just a little) better...
-
I never trust any program that says it will boost performance. Usually they make things worse in my experience and I am very wary of 'free' software these days. Not that I buy much new software, I'm still using Photoshop Elements 7, it's perfectly fine for the things I do.
How much time do you spend in SL now GT40 ?
Also did they update the graphics much since say 2-3 years ago ?
-
Hi Freddy! The way I use Second Life for now is very different (like my real life). Different but always fun.
Of course I spend most of the time to check and manage my dear old "kingdom".
I don't worry if SL has been improved or not. I have a minimalist computer. And Singularity is the perfect viewer for that.
I know that, nowadays, a netbook (under Windows 7) is a non-politically correct thing but at least it works fine for me.
So I don't need any another PC but maybe I will buy a true laptop soon (to try Windows 8.1...). ;D
About Game Booster, the framerate is increased with it (just a little bit).
I don't know if the difference is better with a strong PC. The software stops all the useless processes before launching SL.
And they return to normal when SL stops.
BTW Freddy, congrats for the new look of AI Dreams. O0
-
I suspect there's a lot of useless processes on newer machines. I turned Windows 7 Aero theme off totally because my PC was telling me it was slowing games down - so I don't use that now - all it adds is slightly see-through borders. Totally useless really and not worth slowing your PC down for.
I suspect with a 'stronger PC' it would be more about the graphics card..
Glad you like the changes and thanks for your kind words :)
-
I turned Windows 7 Aero theme off totally because my PC was telling me it was slowing games down
LOL, yeah that's funny that nag screen about Aero ;D
Aero has no effect on a gaming PC, it might on a low end netbook or laptop though.
Still with your WEI score there Freddy, yeah you might as well turn it off, your PC must be struggling to do it :D
-
Ahh so a false positive then...
Well it was annoying me so it had to go !
-
I'm afraid that Aero isn't available in my Windows 7 Starter.
Is it important? Am I really disabled? ;D
-
GT40, you are not missing anything ;D
-
Can I put in a vote for "Yes I like aero" O0
-
No sorry you cannot ;D
It does look nice but it's not really useful and after you have seen it for a few years I find I don't really miss it.
Come to think of it, it's only recently it kept nagging me so it must have been some update...
Anyway, goodbye Aero.
-
NO...say it isn't so! I love Aroe or areo or aero...yeah...That's the one...Aero...it totally changed my life and the way I interacted with my computer.
Why I could sit and watch those transparent top bar thingies for...I dunno...hours...I think...I'm still staring at them and if I ever do, they're fun to watch when I move them...which isn't often...but it is fun!!
I love this arrow thing....u wil 2
-
Hold fire ...
Are we not talking about the chocolate bar ?
(https://aidreams.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.britsuperstore.com%2Facatalog%2FAero_Milk_Chocolate_Bar_125g.jpg&hash=b419fc4c5186804eeeb335dd2ad06cb288a5a23f)
-
That's the kind of Aero I can live with ;D
-
A new departure for my SL... I was using the Windows 7 of my netbook for several months (my old desktop under XP is always working but I stopped to use it for SL). Now, time to test Windows 8 on my new toy (Asus Transformer Book T100). Amazing experience.
Always with my favorite viewer (Singularity). The default settings of the Intel HD Graphics are "High" (Draw Distance: 128 m). Of course, that little machine isn't a PC for gamers (remember I'm not a gamer, lol) but again, a very amazing toy.
The only thing I have to learn (really) is how to act in SL with a touchscreen!!! ;)
-
Glad to hear you are enjoying the new toy 8)
Is it a lot faster ?
-
Thanks Freddy. No doubt that everything runs faster, but I'm unable to say if it's the fault of W8, or of my poor previous PCs. ;D
-
Hello everyone! Yes, despite a lot of bad events in my real life, I continue to travel in SL, but now in a different way. Oh, by the way, I don't understand the stupid comparision Second Life vs. Facebook. Not my problem... ;)
Of course I'm testing my little Asus Transformer Book. Not easy to use a touchscreen in SL, especially with the menus (a mouse, more accurate, always works better). I must try a stylus soon. The GPU isn't a top card for gamers but just what I wish, perfect for me.
A second life for my Second Life. O0
-
What have you got against mice GT ?
Why not plug a nice little cordless one in ?
I'm curious, that's all :)
-
Lol Data, no problem. Of course a mouse is handier.
Explanation: I mainly use the touchscreen in my bed, for movies, apps or Google. When the day is back, the PC is on a table with its mouse, like any normal computer. So I can be a normal user again. :)
-
After Singularity, I'm finally testing Firestorm and the official Second Life viewer v.3 on my little toy. Never too late. ;)
I can't say if Windows 8.1 is faster or not... but I'm SURE it's very difficult (and not funny) to use a touchscreen in SL instead of a mouse/keyboard.
And also, I must LEARN the viewers! ;D
-
Hello! Sorry for waking up. Today I'm testing the Radegast viewer. Supposed to be better for touchsreens. But... I don't understand why. Back to the old good Singularity from the past. ;D
-
Sounds fun, can't you just plug a mouse in ? ^-^
-
Hi Freddy, of course SL runs as a charm with a mouse, on a table, like with any computer. But during the night (most people are in SL during long nights ;)), no mouse in my bed (possible but not handy), only the keyboard and the touchscreen (and a stylus).
I can move with the arrows and "Alt", interact with an object by a tap on the screen, but all that is limited, not like with a mouse. I guess, the same thing with any game.
I watched some videos about the question but got no real answer. I'm always looking for a specific SL viewer for touchscreens. If anyone has the solution, thanks in advance. :)
-
I see, I forgot you were a night owl :D
-
LOL Freddy. ;) Oops, I just found this viewer (for phones):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lumiyaviewer.lumiya
For Android, not sure it can work on my PC... ::)
-
Yes you could run an Android SL viewer in Windows but you will first need to install an "Android emulator".
Bear in mind anything run through an emulator isn't going to be a quick as the real thing.
Here is a list of some of the good ones.
http://tinglebytes.com/2014/04/top-5-best-android-emulators-windows-7-8-8-1-touch/ (http://tinglebytes.com/2014/04/top-5-best-android-emulators-windows-7-8-8-1-touch/)
-
Many thanks Data. An emulator, I didn't know that was possible. I will try one of them.
Before I bought my little Asus T100, I saw many articles and videos about the Asus T300. A lot better and more expensive. But with an amazing difference: possibility to switch from Windows to Android (maybe the only computer able to do that).
Today the T300 runs with Windows only... Microsoft didn't enjoy the previous one. Hey guys, who's the boss?. :)
-
Sorry GT but my Asus TF300T runs Android 4.x.x and tons of apps from the Google Play store!
Love it. I even sprung for the matching keyboard that allows for hot-swapping to convert to just
the tablet portion. I practically don't leave home without it! Especially for work!
-
Hello Art. I was talking about the Asus Transformer Book T300 (aka ASUS Transformer Book Trio for the initial version Windows + Android).
Not about the Asus Transformer Pad TF300T (with Android). Cool too but very different. So many Asus are available... :)
-
Oops! Sorry about the confusion GT! Yes the nice thing about "standards"...there's so many from which to choose!! ;)
-
Bad news for SLers?
http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2014/06/is-linden-lab-abandoning-second-life/ (http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2014/06/is-linden-lab-abandoning-second-life/)
And what do you think of "Is Microsoft abandoning Windows?"
Yes, I agree, just ridiculous. :2funny:
-
Interesting article. Second Life 2 had to happen eventually I guess. What they do with people's existing assets in SL is one of the important questions, if this comes to pass.
-
Yes Freddy, I remember the sad period when Linden Lab invented Zindra (the adult continent) and many interesting places had to disappear (and they disappeared). Now, not only some places, the whole SL. You're right, the beginning of SL 2.0... >:(
Fortunately, an old aricle (June 2014). Since that date, nothing happened. Wait and see...
A bad story similar to the start menu of Windows 8 (correction: much more serious!!). ::)
-
Lets hope that LL make a good job on the viewer for SL2, because, lets be honest, the SL 1 viewers were awful for many years.
-
I'm afraid the viewer isn't important at all if there's nothing to see in SL anymore.
Yes I know, I'm very pessimistic. :( :(

Looks as if you're still in business or able to experience this 2nd life thing.
You'll just have to wait a couple of years until 2016 when it should be finished.
Hopefully, they'll still allow members to play during that construction phase.
Good luck with it!
(pssttt...hey...I'll sell you some virtual swamp land in Florida) ;D :knuppel2:
-
Thank you so much Art, I'm happy Google is my friend:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swampland_in_Florida (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swampland_in_Florida) ;) O0 :idiot2:
-
It seems Oculus Rift is the main part of the next SL:
Oculus Rift DK2 - Assetto Corsa - LaFerrari @ SPA Francorchamps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkPcgEyqCEg#ws)
But hey, I am not a gamer! What is happening to MY SL? :tickedoff:
-
I think that SL will have more diverse offerings. Just like in Real Life, there are many things to do, most for pleasure but some for work or sport or whatever appeals to an individual. I believe this will be done in an effort to hopefully "lure" more people to the SL experience, especially if they have something similar to offer as if it were RL (Real Life).
Just my take....
-
Yes Art, Linden Lab is a powerful company, with computers and employees all over the world. 8)
They can invent many innovative things, not only Second Life, but when SL (the true one) will disappear, I wonder why I would buy a new computer (one of my old projects). ::)
(BTW I read that LL bought Oculus to Facebook, another upsetting new...) :o
-
I must admit I'm just like those people who think that nothing interesting was invented after Win 7.
Hey I have a lot of fun with SL and all that must disappear!!! :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:
-
GT, I think you're reading far too much negative influences into this new build. The article clearly states that this NEW one will try to maintain compatibility with SL to a degree BUT also acknowledges that it is a 12 year old product! Face it, if it doesn't retool itself, it is going to likely die for good!! I don't think any of the players / user community wants that.
It claims to open whole new avenues of exploration and wonder in it's virtual world. So, my advice to you would simply be to take a breath, worry about those things that you can control and the rest, let them go for now. Everything might just work out to surprise you along with everyone else.
I hate to see you get worked into a frenzy over this. Why not re-read the article again. I did and I got more meaning / understanding the second time.
Wishing you all the best, my friend, along with a nice weekend!

Thank you Art. Not easy to guess what will happen, but all that isn't important at all.
Finally only Real Life counts. The people we love and nobody else. SL was just a dream and everyone can live without SL.
No problem, I will survive. O0 O0 O0

I was sure that the "normal" SL will disappear very soon, when I took a look at the welcome page, and saw this:

It seems Oculus Rift will not kill the Past (I hope I'm not wrong). Work in progress... :)

SL is not the only virtual world upgrading so is utherverse aka red light center.n Oculus Rift is just a worked over version of other older virtual reality technology which at the time did not generate much interest. It is the same thing as 3d movies. They had that way back before i was born which is a long long time (i aint saying how long lol). So really neither is new it is more popular now.

But nothing about sex! IMHO the main reason to be in SL... ;)

Sometimes I'm wondering if Oculus Rift inside SL is a good idea... :)

Looks fun GT ;D
May I suggest sitting down when you have the Oculus Rift head set on :D

Lol you're right, Data. But the headset, maybe a better computer too, and now a chair, all that is very expensive... ::)

This looks like a lot of fun. Can't wait :)
