Whatever happened to video game AI ?
« on: March 18, 2015, 09:34:36 pm »
Couple of years old, but some interesting thoughts.

Quote
Gather round fellow gamers, young and old, and I'll tell you a tale of a golden age long past, when the creatures that roam our virtual landscapes stepped blinking into the sunlight for the first time, picked up a thigh bone and smashed stuff with it. 1998 was the year, and Half-Life the game. It brought us Marines who were seemingly capable of outflanking the player, and flushing them out with smartly thrown grenades.  Even its roaches responded to light, movement and smell.

I was reading Stuff magazine the other day while waiting at the dentists and they had a great and lengthy article about Virtual Reality.  There's about a dozen products coming our way and some of them seem impressive. Considering the games though, there must be a lot of space for AI there. They did mention briefly in the article that so much more can be done with Non Player Characters - like them being far more aware of you and vice versa.

Can't decide on the Occulus Rift or maybe the Sony Morpheus. Better start saving !

Naa...just get that cardboard thing that you fold up then slip in your smart phone! Bingo...stereo headset for less than $25 (less the cost of your smartphone)...or not! :2funny:
In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

the best ai that actually made it into real shelf games was called natural motion.

http://www.naturalmotion.com/

it ran gta v character animation.    You can either feed mo cap straight into it, or you can score it, either way works.

they tactlessly tacked on a 'euphoria' word, and i hate that word so much, that it turned me off learning any more about it.

I dont think its any better than what Korrellan or Ultron are doing in their basements,  but it is a finished product, and its kinda swish.
