Here's an interesting video about a robot created in 1779! It played chess and won most of the time!

The first programmable mobile robot was believed to have been built by Hero of Alexandria around 60AD, more than two thousand years ago. Many of his plans and notes survived so it is possible to reconstruct the machines that he built to show that they really worked. The robot in this video is powered by a slowly falling weight. It is programmed by inserting pegs into a spindle and controlled by strings that unwind from around the pegs on the spindle and direct the wheels to steer it.

The wikipedia article goes into great detail about other machines that were imagined or built before and since then too. For example, the first autonomous robots were built by William Grey Walter in 1948.

Interesting history even though it was apparently a hoax.

"Edgar Allan Poe really was like "I've never seen you and the Turk in the same place at the same time" and the guy just starts sweating."
