Androids need to dream.

Quote
What if reason and logic are not the source of intelligence, but its product? What if the source of intelligence is more akin to dreaming and play? Recent research into the "neuroscience of spontaneous fluctuations" points in this direction. If true, it would be a paradigm shift in our understanding of human consciousness. It would also mean that just about all artificial intelligence research is heading in the wrong direction.

Thought provoking and insightful article. We still don't know what 95% of the neural activity in the brain is actually for; it must be for something important because living things cannot afford to waste energy.

Childs play. All that intelligence can be is pattern finding because that is all that we can do to take advantage of physics laws. First you start with Markov Chains, then those help you do Word2Vec to do translation recognition, and so on. Both give you alternative predictions with probabilities.

A brain looks for things to recognize and also generates patterns too, text is a good example. We recognize /and/ say things that are common, or related words, and things said recently many times until get bored and changes the Domain from cats to rockets. This is dreaming and thinking, but the output and input are both patterns. A brain also specializes what data to collect as it grows older.

Generative models are superior.  Just ask Geoff Hinton.

dreaming is probably dormant unused skills asking the AI to be explored.
I also think playing and gaming are just specific skills and not a core part of the AI

btw, is there a keyboard shortcut to make a post or is the post button the only option ? some forums can post with ctrl+enter
which is not the case here

If you look just under the edit box you might see a list of shortcuts that you can use.
shortcuts: hit alt+s to submit/post or alt+p to preview

Getting them to work might be a problem though, depending on your combination of system and web browser. On my MacBook Pro with Google Chrome I have to press control-option-S or control-option-P but at least it works.

What if some hyper skilled mountain climbers and soldiers and fireman, and surgeons, danger people,  actually train in their sleep,  because in your dreams no-one actually dies.

I think nightmares is subconscious (or god.) punishing the conscious because its not proud of it.
