obviously an A.I needs to be capable of that
they present some interesting MAPs :
1schedule with person
2 command person
3 inform person
4 warn person

what I disliked about the video was that the software made him sound like a total simp.

Yota,

Pay attention to most TV commercials. The majority of them must think humans have the intelligence of a golden retriever! (no offense to any golden retrievers out there).

Yes, commercials are trite, banal and ridiculous.

that an important point you bring up an A.I must be
immune to commercials.
the trick with commercials is repetition and linking the product with desirable things
how would you make the A.I immune ?

That poses an interesting challenge.

A lot of commercials employ a variety or Animals whether real, cartoon or 3D generated ones, in which to "Sell" or push a product.

Some employ Humor, Slapstick / pratfalls / mishaps to get one's attention to what is ultimately being promoted.

There are some that attempt to use Guilt in order to have us feel as if we are not doing enough for ourselves or our loved ones.

Commercials will often try to tempt common people into thinking that they too can live a life of luxury and how easily we can afford that vacation, townhouse / home / retreat / travel aboard ships, own expensive cars, etc.

Others will simply use a straight-forward approach, stating how their product will simplify and make our lives easier.

Some will make the items they sound like they are a once in a lifetime deal, but wait, there's more! ;)

They all have one common goal, to get our money by selling us some product or service.

Bottom line, it would take a good deal of coding in order to "cover all bases" of advertisers and their gimmicks.

Other thoughts on this? Good one Yota!

I don't know about anyone else, but I have become advert blind over the years due to so much exposure. There is literally nothing that I have bought due to an advert on the TV apart from perhaps the odd DVD that I would have bought anyway. My mind just blips out while they are on.

Agreed Freddy, but Yota's question was How would one program an A.I. to either become immune to or ignore commercials altogether?

I think it would definitely be an uphill row to plow! ;)

Ah sorry for going off at a tangent there..  ::)

Well if you want a simple programming solution - there used to be a thing in the top left or right corner of the screen that indicated adverts were about to start. Not sure if they still do that though, I think they used to make it hidden, off screen in that twilight zone area we don't see of tagged on data.

I recall many years ago (when the VCR's first arrived), people wanted to record their shows but didn't want to have their recordings messed up with all those commercials. Someone came up with a way that "scanned" or looked for a signal or cue, possible a delayed blank or black screen right before a commercial was to appear. This way the VCR recording would pause during the commercial and resume once the blank / black area appeared. Something like that.

Well, these types of "secrets" don't last very long in the TV / broadcast industry and they quickly found a way to circumvent these commercial killers. After all, broadcasters pay a healthy sum for the vendor / advertiser market and they felt "cheated".

So, as they say, No good deed goes unpunished. Now those 1 minute commercials are now 3 to 5 minutes...flooding people's minds with unwanted items that they think we simply can't live without.

I love the MUTE button on my TV remote!! Then I can check my email and weather on my phone!  O0

One question, Why would I think about exposing my A.I. to a television in the first place? There are other, far better sources if one wanted an A.I. to gain new "input" / data?

A good question too.

There is no point blocking adverts from the AI if it has to function in our world; it will have to learn its own coping strategies just as we do.

An AI that is susceptible too the techniques advertising companies use would also be generally easily coercible; that could/ would be very detrimental too any AI system.

Perhaps how the AI handles commercials could be used as a test for true intelligence; when the AI starts reaching for the remote and hitting mute… you’re making progress.

Conversely, when it starts using your credit cards to order all manner of things from practically every commercial, then obviously, it needs more work on those recognition routines. ;)
