I wonder how far this stuff dates back,   it is true that having faster computers made it easier to do,   but the ideas behind it are nothing new I imagine.

If there was a faster way of doing it, it might be useful for game characters... the current/best way is to use motion capture to record real people doing those animations (walking, running, jumping, turning) then blend them together for inbetween states. Motion capture hardware itself costs thousands of $$$ though, so there's a market for an alternative...

Last year Darpa posted a dance video containing all their physical robots... couldn't imagine they have it highly optimised though
