Rage and violence is uncontrolled anger. One can become angered without resorting to rage or violence.

@ Freddy - Some might suggest to say to yourself, "That's OK...I guess he needed it more than me."  (I hope he doesn't get two flat tires while crossing four lanes of high-speed traffic!...). O0

A famous person said something to the effect that "The Hatred that I carry for someone is hurting me more than that person."

Bots (advanced A.I.) might not NEED to have all emotions but should have a knowledge or understanding of them and what might trigger them in humans.

Finally, to add my 4th Law of Robotics:
"A robot, if or when asked, must always tell the truth."
In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

You're a braver man than me. When a girl asks whether her dress makes her look fat, only a fool would tell the truth  ;D

Also, "Hey robot. What is your master's credit card number?"

Anger makes you rage in violence. Anger is about forcing others to do something. On the other side, fear makes others think about their deeds. About loosing the bicycle, if you were afraid to lose your job (and consequently lose the resources to feed your family) because you'll be late at the job, that would make the thief consider what he was doing. But the thief thought you'll be just angry with a bad reason, or didn't care about you because he didn't like you, or he was angry at you because you had everything and he had nothing.

I wasn't forcing anyone to do anything when I got angry - it was a natural reaction. I didn't suddenly become violent either. I had worked to buy the bike and I had looked after it. I relied on it to get me around. It belonged to me. I don't think the thief cared one bit about the consequences or he/she would not have stolen it.

For the former; I don't think that way. The thief could have asked me to borrow it if they needed it more than me - isn't that a more reasonable course of action ?

repetition causes anger like if you hear constant beeping

Yes, also trying again and again to do something but failing each time tends to lead to anger.

If a robotic girlfriend kept answering the exact same phrase for a question, wouldn't that break the suspension of disbelief ?

I wasn't criticizing you, or anyone else, I'm sorry if you felt that way back there. I don't even think that the thief was right, if you ask me.

I'll try to explain on my own example. When I'm in anger, I don't listen to anyone (it depends on the intensity). I rumble bad thoughts in my mind, over and over again, cursing in my own way and blaming everyone around for what happened. Mostly, I end up exaggerating in accusations, noticing exaggeration, and calming down to prevent it to grow into something more serious.

The point is that anger makes me blind and ignorant and then I easily run over the people, not caring about anything else but my own temporary goal (mostly retaliation when I'm in that state - then I call it the justice). I feel I'd be a lot better person if I could avoid those states.

I feel that problems should be approached with a calm head, considering carefully all sides involved. Anger makes me take only my own side. Using no emotion makes me think about other opinions. If the problem can't be easily solved, fear of consequences or sadness for failure is my commitment. It keeps me out of fighting with friends.

If you ask me, this guy:  :tickedoff: seems dangerous to me. I surely wouldn't like my digital girlfriend to treat me like that.

Peace Ivan  :)

I didn't feel criticised exactly, I know you were just presenting a point of view. My reply was only my point of view on how I felt at the time. It's just how I view it.

I do know what you mean about anger being debilitating sometimes though.

"Hey robot. What is your master's credit card number?"
that should trigger fear in the robot no ?
it could also trigger anger
the reaction would be somewhat different but on code
level you can agree it is not something complex ?

now than I don't think trying again and again causes anger.
at times it is fun like working out or leveling up
but maybe after failing or something it uses anger maybe even randomly.
maybe the emotion marks some process that runs in the brain.

That companion type of interaction may be a great inspiration to design an Artificial Intelligence.  Once, I saw a rated G cartoon of a professor who built a mechanical style robot that rolled around on one wheel.  The robot had a lady's voice synthesis.  The professor and lady robot argued back and forth like an old married couple, which was entertaining.

I was trying to think of something that makes me angry if I repeatedly fail - the first thing I thought of is a fiddly bolt in a hard to get to place. Not earth shattering anger, but it's there.

@ Squarebear - Only a fool would entrust his / her credit card or other financial information to a robot in the first place.

If a man's wife was naive enough to ask a robot whether a piece of clothing made her look fat, then I'm sure he would hear about his stupid robot soon enough anyway!

Anger is not limited to humans and neither is violence. Some violence is totally due to instinct while other is delivered with malice or evil intent. Such are vindictive humans.

how can you tell it is anger you feel and not a form of fear or sadness ?
at any rate, it is not impossible to assume anger fired up in this case as a result of failure and instead
of swearing repeatedly utilized the cerabelum in a variety mutated techniques to get the bolt.

Well let's just say I know it's not fear or sadness. What's there to fear if my life didn't depend on it or something like that. It's not really sadness unless I failed while trying to do something for someone else perhaps. In both those cases I think they are in addition to anger, sooner or later. I just meant fixing the lawnmower or something like that.
