All it's doing is literally just staying still, and slightly adjusting its head/body to maximize the cleaning of dead skin cells shedding / get a massage for broken bones causing pain / warmth when cold / etc....
When touch reward is present, it strengthens the vision sense nearby in time it saw, and linked is actions tried, so in this case it did nothing and so it does that upon seeing a brush/ hand, expecting touch to occur too. Instead of seeing hand/brush and predicting the next senses is hand/brush+boringTouch+runActions it predicts the more attention grabbing "hand/brush+HappyTouch+lowMotorsSpeeds". The twitching or micro saccading is just prediction error and corrective prediction...
Recognizing a brush image is kinda just pixel matching but in a very smart way where you compare relative difference among groups of pixels in a hierarchy for location and brightness expectations of brush pixels.

You mean that the desire to be petted gradually increases over time, then drops while being petted? Kind of like hunger, except not as urgent? I could see that being the case.

For me 'grooming' is a social acknowledgement. So you can physically turn off your fight/flight, and get in a social mindset. Your gut works better etc.
