Neuroscience and the Free Energy Principle
« on: May 29, 2020, 01:07:34 pm »

Here is another excellent podcast from Lex Fridman, this time a fascinating and thought provoking interview with Karl Friston who is one of the greatest scientists of our time. In the interview he provides clear answers to some of the most difficult problems that we are trying to solve in our quest for artificial intelligence. It still won't be easy though.

Neuroscience, rather important in future, even more important than maths, for AI  :knuppel2:

The free energy principal. And What does being alive mean, he asks?

To defend, flee, repair, duplicate, unlike rocks which don't - cells and animals maintain their form. We model big data/ the universe to be able to await any unforeseen likely situation and rid them using likely answers. Even though our body isn't a statue, the global larger form maintains it's structure longer than a rock could while the little lesser low level units of yourself change lots and do all the hard work.

Matter arranges into patterns on its own, such as arteries, homes lined up, fast moving bodies, brains, where the units of something are aligned/ going the same direction, have shared goal, or are a similar structure or location or time. These require less information/ energy if you go with the flow like car drag or know where to find a home on a road blindfolded. Least resistance. And it enables systems/ structures to exploit predictableness and explore the most space.

Wrapping it all up: Physics governs particles. They don't behave randomly. Therefore there's patterns at many scales. And because patterns exist and things aren't random, systems are able to maintain their form! The things mentioned above like aligned motion or lined up homes are patterns, so is DNA and duplication, so whether it is a thinking mind or a mindless cell duplicating, patterns allow for survival of systems! Mutation as well.

He says around 1:05:00 doing non-random motion makes you alive haha. Patterns.
