Leaf Project for AI/Robotics Restarted
« on: December 05, 2006, 07:19:58 pm »
This is a general notice to those interested
in A.I as used in a robotics application.

I have decided to co-opt and restart the old Leaf Project. For those unfamiliar;
Leaf is/was an A.I. type chatbot interface combined with a robotic control
application. The project was originally the brain-child of Dr. Weimer. The web
site that was up until recently the home of the Leaf Project, is now the home
of a virus, and cannot and should not be linked to. I was lucky enough to have
downloaded most of the relavent files for the project back in February, and so
have now decided to revive it. I see promise in this as far as it pertains to the
linking of an A.I. to a robotic framework. Although I do not have the resources
to develope the robotic framework, I will concentrate my efforts on redeveloping
the A.I. interface based on Dr. Weimer's work.

Anyone who is interested in following this research, may do so by checking out
the topic I began for this project on the VirtualHumans Forum site under the
heading of "Robotics", topic listed as
"Research into AI/Robotics using the Leaf Project".

Here is a link to that forum -  http://www.vrconsulting.it/vhf/

Great idea! I had seen I think the site about the Leaf project a long time ago. Sad to see it's site succombed to a virus. :( It's good that you'll revive it. Do they know? It would be nice for them to also continue to contribute. Maybe they can offer more material in the future and let you have the site for them. I hope it works out. I am more interested in Automotive Robotics though but this may be interesting as it could apply to automotive applications as well, if put together right.

GamerThom and FuzzieDice,

Just to let you know, after reading your posts I did some research into the virus and it's apparently a line of code that calls another website which contains the virus. The offending site has been documented in the past, and it looks likely that the exploit that allows the code to be added to the site is related to old or outdated PHP code. So there's likely nothing wrong with the site itself.

The project is alive and well and may people participate in the project's Yahoo Group. A project wiki has been started as well.

Well, if people get a virus going to the site, they obviously aren't going to want to visit unless the situation is dealt with - like removing the code that calls the other site, for example.

I've had that happen in a banner rotation thing I used to have on an old site years ago. I had to remove the banner rotation because of a virus people started getting on their machines. Needless to say, I never used that banner rotation service again.

The good thing is that http://www.leafproject.org/ is back online, and the project seems to be reasonably active.

Anyone here building a 'leaf'?

I wish I could. But there are 2 things preventing me;
#1. I'm a partial quadrapalegic with only partial use of one hand.
#2. I lack the financial resources for the necessary parts.

So what I am doing is concentrating my efforts on further developing the Leaf A.I. itself
and the visual perception/recognition software (Mavis & framecap) that goes with it.
