Training AI ------First Post. YAY!
« on: June 01, 2008, 01:32:56 am »
Hey everyone. I enjoy the idea of having an ai learn in the background while I am away. This can be any genre, whether it be reading wikipedia, a gaming engine, or learning math skills.

One such example is Superpower by Golem Labs. The game allows you to let it play itself, and it learns to become practically unbeatable/ingeneous. This game, while not necessarily a fun game to all, is quite impressive as it is the most real use of learning ai I have ever witnessed. I played a game once where I hacked the game files and gave myself 2000 nimitz aircraft carriers. At first the game played like normal, but once the different countries found out what I had (i was just a 3rd world country), they began to buy them from me. It was a snowball effect, and the computer found a new, unexpected situation, analyzed it, and reacted ingeniously to it. Brilliant. The only better situation would have been for the countries to invade me and take them, but would that have been what real countries would have done?

Anyways, the point is, does anyone else know of any programs I can download that will let the ai become smarter if I let it run in the background? Again, these do not have to be games. Anything, please. Nothing is too offtopic here. If anything even remotely popped into your mind, please mention it. Thanks!

Hi there and welcome to the forum :)

I like the idea of an ai that learns too, but I am lost for many examples.  My first thought was of UltraHal which is a chatbot that can learn from text and websites (whether this can be done in the background I am not sure).   The other is the game Creatures which has little critters that learn to interact with their environment.  You can download a free version of Creatures from their website called 'Docking Station'.  There's a good webpage on that game here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creatures_(artificial_life_program)

At the moment those are the only two I can think of, maybe someone else has a few more ideas.

Oh yes, one more you may find interesting : VI Evolver.  Scroll down that page to find the download.
