If state run establishments are still running on Windows XP then there's no wonder this sort of thing happens.

I've been a Network System Admin so my heart goes out to the peeps being caught out by this.

They are first and last in line for blame when system gets ransomed/ etc.

Virtual RD machines is the way to go for large organisations; running on very thin clients... NO USB ports lol.

I've filled USB ports with Araldite to stop peeps infecting networks.

Periodic off line/ isolated backups should be compulsory lol... back it up and disconnect it.

 :)

The Dutch news just reported that this virus was developed by the NSA before it was stolen.
Thanks, America. /s

Hey...nothing but the best to confuse the rest.  ;)

In this current environment one can't have freedom AND security at the same time. That is unfortunate.

Indeed. Whether it's software or hardware, government agencies should take a lot more responsibility over keeping their weapons secure. Now imagine, instead of this software weapon, it was a nuclear missile that was stolen...

I stop trusting the government when it let "THE BOMB" slip out of their hands and then who did not have they
sold the secrets for pennies.
This is why Apple did not want to give their secret encryption codes, that they payed big buck to make, to a government.

Considering that those 300,000 computers (companies or individuals) only account for less than .000125 % of those who own Internet connected computers, I wonder how many of them are either still using XP or failed to use updated Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware software?

Not that I condone the attacks at all but there are those who say their computer still works fine and they're not going to change. (you know who they are)....

I know of a very large government that uses USB security devices to log onto their respective computers at work. Odd how it works for everyone (or doesn't in some cases, obviously).

Interesting to see the article mention the issue about NOT using FLASH & SILVERLIGHT. With every upgrade like those, a new and potentially dangerous piece of malware could be enclosed.

Good article and good find!
