The oarsman quote reminds me of a joke with a play on words but...oh well...you've likely heard it before.

A man was visiting London for the first time and decided to rent a small motorboat for fun.

While putting about the motor stalled out. After several attempts to restart the motor he gave up.
Just then, he spotted a man with two gals in a rowboat drifting fairly close by. The Yank asked,
"Ahoy mate! Can I borrow one of your oars?"

The Englishman in the boat shouted back at him, "Em's not 'oars mate...'ems me sisters!"
