17 minute burn.
« on: January 06, 2022, 01:22:28 am »
Remembering all the fuss about fusion in the 70s and then the cold fusion fiasco in the 80s I all but gave up hope for nuclear fusion. The Chinse actually were able to sustain a 17-minute temperature of 70,000,000° C with their Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak!  Looking at ITER's schedule it's going to take about 13 more years before they even start using Deuterium-Tritium Considering that these TOKAMAK use very heavy and large permanent magnets using these to power spaceships doesn't make sense unless you build the ship in space and use asteroid materials for the magnet.  Of course, SpaceX is considering a nuclear rocket but not a fusion one. One of the arguments for fusion space power is that fuel is everywhere, but there are molten salt reactors where the fuel is very abundant as well in space.

The quests for artificial intelligence and controlled nuclear fusion have followed very similar cycles of optimism and disappointment over the past 70 years. At least we haven't had a nuclear winter yet.
