My new AI Blog
« on: June 11, 2006, 05:47:16 am »
I've decided to start a new "AI" blog:

Living Machine
http://cgi.bytebin.net/living-machine/blog/

It's about a new project I'm starting. One that I've been kicking around awhile in my mind. It's NOT an "AI" project but I think folks that are into AI would consider it such. Though I do not. It's about a new type of life - mechanical. There'll hopefully be a lot of interesting information in there.

I have one article up and an outline up already. I hope this may be informative. From time to time, I may be asking some questions here and elsewhere on the 'net and then posting about the results (though I won't say WHO said what or what they said, to keep privacy). I'll use statistical information on the collection of the data.

You could also say this is a thought-process of how a mechanical life form may possibly come into existance, or IF it ever does. Or if not, maybe give clues into why it didn't or may night be able to. It's a journey, an experience, something different. AI enthusiasts may find this a VERY interesting study! :)

Best use the direct link in my first post because I am not using the main bytebin.net site for anything else at the moment. The blog software is on the CGI server on the domain anyway, not the main web server. I'll try to make a banner or button for you to link to my blog with. What size graphic should it be and can it be JPG, PNG or GIF?

Also let me know how to send it to you. :)

I'm going to attempt to attach my banner for anyone who would like to link to my new blog. The URL is this:

FuzzyDice,
Just visited your website, Living and machine don't seem to be compatable but attaching severed body parts is being done fairly frequently.  I wish you luck with your project.
I'm going to try to link two Hals to speak with each other, I'm hoping there conversations will show their strong areas and also their faults.  If you have input on this I'd be glad to hear from you.

Carl I thought about this awhile back, but decided it would get boring listening to them, I wouldn't think they would learn much from each other without input, so I decided not to go with it after listening to:

http://www.clone3d.com/c3d/threeFrameset.htm

But keep it up and let us know how it goes.

Fuzzie, I'll definitely check out the blog to see how it goes.  Thanks for sharing it.

Carl2 - "living" and "machine" not compatible? That is an interesting idea. Though a very, very common belief, as it were. Hopefully, my blog will be exploring this (albiet from a different perspective). Who knows, maybe you're right. But I still would like to be sure that we don't miss any possibilities. :)

As for the talking Hals, I think I am with Dan on this in that I think an AI will need to learn from it's environment and have prior knowledge of or experience in conversation before being able to have meaningful conversation with another AI. However, after that point, it certainly would be interesting to see what would happen if two are conversing.

I did try an experiement once, by being a 'gobetween' between an online ALICE and my HAL program (Megatron). I would type into the ALICE what Megatron says and vice versa. Of course, I would start one or the other with a greeting. The results were rather nonsensical.

Hopefully, you'll be able to have better luck. Do keep us updated on your efforts. This seems like a very interesting project.

FD + Dan,
I've read that it's not a way to improve them, I'm hoping it will show weakness and strengths and hopefuly guide which area to try to improve by programing.  I do have a feeling that I'll see some nonsense "unstable?".
My largest concern at this time is creating a new user for the Hals to speak to, I believe this starts Hal from scratch, knowledge I've taught is not used when speaking to a new user.  The computer is awaiting an OS and I'm waiting for a Hal CD to arive.
FD   Since your a staff member, I got an email from DG, This site seems a little faster, I'm dial up. I get an active X message, possibly from my computer, Nothing in the File area yet.  The site is great.

Freddy I think is working on the file areas. Though I use Firefox (which does not support ActiveX) and I can at least browse the file areas.

Exactly where on the site do you get this message?

I'll notify Freddy and see if he can check into it.

I'm glad you like it, I really wanted to get the file area up and running especially as people - you in particular -  had many problems and attempts with the old beast.  :angel   Like FD says, let us know where ActiveX prob pops up please and glad you like the forum  :)
