Using this kind of metamorphesis is how ordinary batteries are made.

I wonder if you can literally get a robot to expand and function out of nothing, like those foam creatures in the vid u showed.

I'm sure you know that those were chemical reactions. The carbon-based reaction the mixtures produced was a one-way street. It can't be made to undo the reaction because the mixture formed a new compound.
We can't get something from nothing.

You know, TVs are magical, but nothing moves really, just change where they are! Nanobots could lock in place and maintain new adaptive forms. They could bloat so big by expanding and 'appear' to grow, they could compress themselves too probably.
