Back to the Future
« on: March 12, 2014, 10:13:33 am »

I know I'm late, but I discovered Windows 8 yesterday... I wanted to try it before MS invents Windows 9. Not easy to buy the toy I wished. Finally it arrived! The Asus Transformer T100 with Windows 8.1. Cute little machine.

By the way I was just beginning to understand Windows 7. Now I must learn EVERYTHING about touchscreens and tablets (and Windows). I hope I'm not too old... ;)

I wouldn't bother GT. I believe Microsoft announced it was dropping Windows 8.

Wow that's new to me too, though not entirely unexpected - I was thinking it would be a long drawn out death like with Vista.

Windows 8 is the biggest mistake since Vista and Millennium Edition. The sooner it is removed, the better.

Actually I am surprised that I bought 7 in October 2009. Four and a half years ago, though it doesn't seem like it.

Yes and MS is kicking Windows XP to the curb next month!! No more security updates no any updates. Dropped!!

I've gotten used to 7 and actually like it but 8? I just can't force myself to adopt!!

Personally, I'd sooner go back to my Ubuntu machine if that happened!! At least it just worked and was free and would always get a fresh update every six months (also for free) and it worked a lot like windows but more secure and personal and...WHY am I using this Windows 7? Have to rethink my thinking!!

In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

The only thing I have against windows 8 is the lack of a decent start button. I don't want a desktop operating system that acts like a tablet. I don't have a touch screen nor do I want one. Otherwise, windows 8 seems pretty stable to me. I remember the windows 98 days... yeesh! Now that was a buggy piece of software.

I use the windows environment more than Ubuntu and Mint even though I prefer Mint... Unfortunately, programs and drivers are built mostly for windows. I have a fair amount of equipment that only use windows drivers, so that's why I'm stuck using Windows.

One of the articles suggested that Windows 9 might come out in 2015. Yes, this is all news to me. I'm really not sure how I feel about it either.

Ah! Finally ONE PC user who dares to write (on this forum) he doesn't hate W8. I know, not politically correct. everybody MUST hate W8 here.

By the way, I have found many other people on the internet, who like (I don't say "love") this OS. Faster, perfect for touchscreens, tablets or smartphones. Android and iOS are everywhere, MS needed to have his own modern OS.

Of course I'm not an expert (did you notice?), but I guess that professional programmers don't worry about dummies like me. My fault. If W8 disappears (I really think it's impossible), I shall have lost 400 euros. Not a catastrophe... :)

Hehe there's no unwritten rule that everyone here should hate Windows 8. I don't control what people write. But yes most of the few people here do not like Windows 8.

You will not have lost your money, I expect MS to support W8 for a while yet.

If you like it then fair enough :)

Many thanks Freddy. I hope Data and you allow me to give this link that Data just published on his site:

Of course that's fine, we're all friends here :)

I reckon you will probably be able to upgrade to W9 if you needed to and it turns out to be any good. Who knows W9 may not set the world alight either. It must be hard to come up with new ideas and even more so to make them genuinely useful to a broad range of users.

I'm sure you will enjoy your new toy whatever the doubters think ;) :)

By the way, that Asus Transformer is a nice bit of kit I think. I had it on my wishlist for a long time. The only reason I didn't get it was I don't really need a mobile computer at the moment. If I were to buy one it would probably be one of those, so good buy  O0

Also W8 was really aimed at devices like this, so really I don't think you made a mistake. For us desktop devotees W8 was just unnecessary, but for mobile it makes more sense.

So in the end I hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of your new toy  :)

You have a nice bit of kit there GT, I would like one  :)

This just means for me that when I'm asked to build PC's for people I now have a perfect reason to NOT recommend Windows 8, it's going to make my life easier.  8)

Nice topic  ;)
